The Art of Rachel Weeks//Theros: Beyond Death —Jan. 17, 2020

As with the previous block, Theros offers very little that Slivers could work with - in my opinion. No creatures, enchantments or artifacts are really of note for the hive unless i'm missing something. Now, what I really want to talk about are the custom playmats on inkedgaming.com - specifically those featuring the art of Rachel Weeks. She has produced one of the most beautiful Sliver art i've ever seen:

enter image description here

I Had to order two Playmats with her artwork, each in the same style for two out of my three commanders. My only hope is that she takes commissions and would follow up to do another mat for my third. Edit: Shameless plug here, if you read this and decided that you want a playmat of your own, use my friend referral link: https://prz.io/1AVEyeS0

Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord and Morophon, the Boundless combo has been lighting it up in Modern. What do you think of dropping this in to EDH? It changes the deck a little and maybe for the better

gvazdaus,

I've heard of the Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord + Morophon combo - didn't know it was a thing in modern. My only issue with including it is that individually each card doesn't make much of an impact - Sorin doesn't do much for Slivers in general and my assessment of Morophon has not changed since I first saw it - within the context of this deck it's just a win more card. If I have the mana to cast it, then i'll likely be tapping out just to get it on the field. The deck relies on close to the ground creatures with plenty of interaction to support them. If i'm going to be playing anything that has a high CMC then it absolutely must guarantee that I am winning the game on that turn - Morophon doesn't do that. Great, now you make me miss Paradox Engine :(

LVL_666 What are your thoughts on Frenetic Sliver to help protect from removal? I know that it adds a lot of luck into the equation but it has saved me a ton of times. I usually combo it with Dregscape Sliver so I can get around the sacrifice effect. Thoughts?

The_Munchkin,

Frenetic Sliver is cool, but unfortunately is inconsistent. That alone bars it from being considered a viable competitive option. But is it cool? Heck yeah. It does have some awesome synergy with slivers that have ETB effects like Harmonic Sliver . Dregscape Sliver leaves me a bit apprehensive - because in my opinion I think it's only good for one really big play after your graveyard is filled up with a bunch of hivelings. If you can't kill the table on that turn, then best case scenario you'll bring back specific slivers and get an infinite combo to seal the win. Worst, and probably most likely scenario(s): someone will use some graveyard hate (at least in my meta) or someone will remove one key Sliver ( Gemhide , Queen , or Basal ) preventing an infinite combo from going off. So instead you make some big play and deal a bunch of combat damage - killing off some of the table but not all. Then all or some of those resources are exiled and you're in a relatively decent position.

Having to rely on Frenetic 's ability to avoid the Exile effect of Dregscape is just too unpredictable for any competitive Sliver deck. But, it's very fun in a more casual deck, and i'd honestly recommend it - seems like it'd be a blast to flip coins and have the table be like "Is it going to get exiled?!".

Okay after loving slivers from afar for years... I made a sliver deck. It isn't good, no great lands, only have first sliver and sliver overlord for my only 5 color slivers. But I have everything else. My only question is, should First Sliver be the commander instead of sliver overlord?

hey k_drake, both have completely different playstyles and they're great in their own way.

First, I'd invest in mana base.

You could try getting some shock lands or cheaper versions (but still fetchable) lands like Cinder Glade and Canopy Vista . Plus there are some cheap fetch lands that enter the battlefield tapped, Flood Plain , Grasslands , Mountain Valley , Rocky Tar Pit and Bad River to name a few.

Cards like Prismatic Omen , Chromatic Lantern , Manaweft Sliver and Gemhide Sliver are must have.

Feel free to link your decklist, it'll be a pleasure to take a look and help a fellow Sliver player.

I personnaly play The First Sliver (The Birth of the Swarm - [EDH]), it can lead to very explosive plays but is less consistent than the Sliver Overlord.

You should try them both since you already have those cards.

Have a good day!

k_drake,

Sorry for taking so long to respond, but as for your question - "Should First Sliver be the commander instead of sliver overlord?" - First things first (pun intended) - if you ever see a Sliver Overlord as an opponent, your commander will likely get stolen without a Crystalline Sliver or something there to prevent it. First has two strategies - sliver tribal where you just rely on cascade triggers and dump out all your permanents as fast as possible, and as a cEDH Food Chain commander - I highly recommend ShaperSavant's Food Chain Sliver as a good point of reference. Both strategies are totally viable, but are meant for very different metas.

But to answer your question directly - First should absolutely be your commander if your play style and personal preference is geared more toward it. Your only real worry in a tribal meta is Sliver Overlord , but if you have the right tools you can stop your commander from getting stolen.

I thought I'd already upvoted this deck... Well I better, since I started building it myself (though I'm having to use some very nice proxies for the Dual lands)!

Trying to give suggestions or advice to the soon-to-be top Sliver tribal deck on the site seems just a touch redundant so, I'll just leave my +1 and wish you the best of luck, this deck deserves the spot!
