Modern Horizons - Slivers. Have. Returned. —May 23, 2019

For the record, here was my reaction when Slivers were spoiled the other day:

Spoiler Show

Finally. Finally we're blessed with new Slivers to build with. I'm sure everyone is aware of Lavabelly, Dregscape, and The First Sliver - but wow. Wizards really surprised me. Apparently there are going to be even more Slivers printed in this set, so i'm just on cloud 9.

For those more curious about how the Slivers were designed in this set, I refer you to a Card Preview article posted on magic.wizards.com titled A Sliver of Direction by Cynthia Sheppard. I'm so glad they returned to the Dominaria style of Slivers, as they're the iconic design. I think they just look cooler than those weirdo Shandalar "Predator" Slivers. Also, the article has a great breakdown on Sliver Anatomy:

LVL_666 and other Sliver fans, pls take a look at the following link. While we wait for 2023... I wanted to make into Slivers some of the fun commander/multiplayer MTG effects.

New counterspell looks great since you don't have a chance to be countered by opponent paying or casting another counterspell in response. Also since you have so good mana fixing you probably won't notice a difference between or in casting costs.

Mythwind, thanks for commenting on the page, i'll definitely check out that decklink - why not use tappedout though? There's plenty of options for creating a forums post - just sayin'. But keeping in line with that previously hypothetical sliver - I realize the CMC was too low for something of that power level. Instead i'd opt for

  • Name: Kindred Sliver
  • CMC:
  • Rules: Whenever a Sliver you control enters the battlefield or attacks, draw a card.
  • Power/Toughness: 1/1

I feel like that's fairly balanced. But my true dream sliver is this darling:

  • Name: Void Sliver
  • CMC:
  • Rules: All slivers gain , sacrifice a Sliver: counter target non-creature spell.
  • Power/Toughness: 2/2

That's a Sliver i'd love to see in 2023.

What are your thoughts on Despark ? Could it be better or played alongside Anguished Unmaking ?

April 26, 2019 1:10 p.m.

Mortlocke says... #5

Hey Vlasiax, thanks for bringing up Despark . This card has my curiosity, but upon closer inspection seems less useful than Anguished Unmaking . When playing against stax/high powered permanents ( Winter Orb , Blood Moon , Back to Basics , Food Chain etc.), or commanders that are low cmc but high in power (Najeela, Blade-Blossom) Despark just falls short. To answer your question - it shouldn't be played alongside Anguished Unmaking , and cannot replace it - unless you are in a limited or casual meta/format.

LVL_666 ..."why not use tappedout though? There's plenty of options for creating a forums post - just sayin'"...

How do you access and create custom cards in tappedout for others to see? There are fewer Sliver fans in magicseteditor...

I would like comments from true Sliver fans on the card creations...

Hey Mythwind,

"How do you access and create custom cards in tappedout for others to see?"

That functionality isn't native to Tappedout per se, but you can go to https://mtgcardsmith.com/ and create a card. Here's an example (and my absolute dream sliver):

Voidchant Sliver

You just use the image tool in the comment block, all you need to do is just host your custom created sliver card on an image hosting service. You also have the alternate option of using the "custom card" option at the very end of the comment tool block.

Hey Mythwind,

Full disclosure - I made a boo boo with the wording of my previous "dream sliver". This one is the real deal:

Nice! A bit odd to have as a 3/2 and not a symmetric 2/2... but agree that countering spells is probably one of the most competitive things Slivers need. Though on my design I added a discard for the effect to make sure a large board does not give you too much of an advantage.

While we wait for years for new Slivers y have been trying to design slivers in all color combinations including colorless as a "6th" color ... I even tried to make cycles...

Hey Mythwind,

I actually found a forum where you can submit custom cards and fellow tappedout users can (and actually will) weigh in on design choices. Check out the custom cards forum. I submitted my "dream sliver" to the previously mentioned forum (link here), and came up with the following adjustments (freezameme.mov ):

Voidchant's final form

The tappedout community is downright awesome, and there are plenty of people here who want to engage with you and discuss card design. Check out that forum, and post your ideas there. Or here, i'll always rap with anyone about Sliver design.

Also, almost forgot - speaking of Sliver design, in my opinion the previously mentioned Esper Sliver is well...trying to do entirely way too much. Choose one thing. That's what Slivers do. Each sliver focuses on just one ability and brings it to the hive. Also, to my knowledge, there isn't a single sliver that's been printed before that is a 3/3 for only of any kind. When designing a Sliver you can't just put down what you want - you have to consider every other Sliver that came before it (I made that mistake too!). You also have to consider other cards that have been printed previously that are similar to your Sliver's design.

Slivers are the only tribe unique to magic, and as such they are meant to be something of a tribute to the game itself. The two Sliver designs I like to reference are Harmonic Sliver and Necrotic Sliver . Their designs are based off of Aura Shards and Vindicate respectively. Each Sliver embodies those classic spells, with with a bit of a twist to keep them from overshadowing them. Try and keep that in mind when thinking of your new sliver.

So LVL_666, how do you feel about the recently spoiled Morophon, the Boundless ? Seems to be an insane card for sliver decks, although your deck might not need it as it is very optimized. But it still seems like an amazing card for a sliver deck and i am going to run it, mostly because i just love the effect and i need an excuse to get my old EDH sliver deck out to play again :D

But what are your thoughts?

Doombeard1984 says... #14

@Odysseus_97 and LVL_666, I am definitely going to be trialling Morophon, the Boundless . Would be mad not too.

Was hoping I could pick the Hives collective mind on something else. I'm thinking of putting Ghostflame Sliver and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon in my sliver deck Sliver Swarm. Probably replace Leeching Sliver and The Immortal Sun . Is this a combo/wrath effect worth playing?

WUBRG97 says... #15

Doombeard1984: Yeah, I am going to try it out as well, if not just because i love the card in itself. The Immortal Sun is actually an include i would really like, as I am not to certain i like it in the other deck i am using it.

Considering you could tutor for Ghostflame Sliver and play it for 5 mana, would not be impossible. However it is a small window of possibilities, and it does not serve much else of a purpose. I think there would be better wrath effects to use.

Hey LVL_666, guess what? I'm glad to be the one to share that...

Slivers have at last returned! Forgive me for forgetting on here how to link card images, however we have 4 in all so far. We have The First Sliver, a , 7/7 sliver that has Cascade and also gives slivers you cast Cascade!

Then there's Dregscape Sliver, a 2/2 sliver that gives slivers you control Unearth ! it has Unearth itself too.

Of note also is another called Lavabelly sliver which pairs of course well with Sliver Queen , a 2/2 sliver that reads: Slivers that you control have, "when this creature enters the battlefield, it deals 1 damage to target player or planeswalker and you gain 1 life."

TThen there's just a that gives your slivers a +1/+1 counter for damaging a player also.

I'm quite eager to see what else this wonderful set has in store.

There are some great slivers spoiled today including The First Sliver (, 7/7 with cascade, your other Slivers have cascade) and Dregscape Sliver (, 2/2 with Unearth , other slivers have this ability) - do you think they deserve a spot in the deck?

New Lavabelly Sliver , hits/leech a player or a planeswalker for 1 damamage.

Man this motivates me to put my deck together!!!
