Ashling's Evolution Playtest Results

MagicBlake, 12 years ago

I play tested the changes to Ashling and these are the initial results.

Equipment works well, but here are the downsides: equip costs can be burdensome if Ashling is repeatedly exploding. Equipment is not subtle and draws a little more attention than I would care for. Lastly, if Ashling gets tucked or or becomes unplayable by some other effect all equipment becomes dead cards because this deck contains no other creatures.

Card draw worked well and was a great addition; however, Tower of Fortunes is a little slower than I would like due to its high cost. I am pressed for a better option though...

Land destruction is just as mean as I thought it would be and just as effective as I had hoped. Burning Sands was not as powerful as I had thought because my friends play relatively creature light decks and/or very high cost creatures so there are never all that many creatures on the field.

Walking Atlas is a great card in the first several rounds of a game but after turn 10 its a dead draw. I decided to remove all creatures from this deck for the thematic feel as much as the functionality.

More play testing is required. However, I believe I will not add any more equipment but possibly more land destruction. The question of the week is should I add more mana acceleration like Fire Diamond, Worn Powerstone, Sisay's Ring, and Ur-Golem's Eye. Questions and comments are always appreciated!!!

Check back weekly I add an update to at least one of my deck weekly!

5th place out of 19 participants.
*For 5th place, getting 3 boosters is pretty nice. :D

Round 1: I won 2-0 against a W/U Control deck, which did little against me. Every time he dropped a Drogskol Reaver, I'd have an answer for it.

Round 2: I won 2-0 against W/G/B Junk... something? All his deck did well was gain life, which I chomped through. Didn't play as a traditional Junk deck, so I really don't know what to consider it. The guy was pretty bitter about me winning though.

Round 3: I lost 0-2 against RakB wins. First game, I got mana-screwed. Second game, I needed 1 more turn to sustain. The deck was just too fast for me to deal with.

Round 4: I went in a 1-1 Draw with a Jund Midrange; just needed another turn and I could've swung for the win.

Round 5: I won 2-0 by the player conceding the matches.

-3 Borderland Ranger, -2 Wrack with Madness, -3 Wild Defiance for +3 Axebane Guardian, +3 Gatecreeper Vine, +2 Curse of Bloodletting. Decided mana ramp for Stuffy Doll outweighed being all gimmicky with Wild Defiance and Wrack with Madness. Testing again to see if any other changes need to be made. Thinking it could use a little more removal, so adding a few cards to the maybe-board.

if anyone has any comments, let me know!

Considering adding in some draw X spells, but not sure what to take out. Recently added Memnarch and it's been game-ending with the amount of mana acceleration present in the deck

Manabase Criticism

In playtesting, this deck has never had an issue with the 23 lands due to the 4x Think Twices.

Despite trying to make my first idea work: Either build up board presence with counters or use blood artist+killing wave combo as another win con.. The deck was far too slow. Beside the fact that I've changed it into more of a token deck, the concept hasn't changed. Build up the board and either swing for lethal or use blood artist+killing wave

Regarding Side/Maybeboard

gaforb, 12 years ago

Anything in the sideboard is good enough to be put in the deck, but most likely hasn't been due to being out of my price range. Also of note: The deck is built entirely from modern-bordered cards. Call it picky, but i just don't like old bordered cards.

The two cards I keep flipping on are Delver of Secrets  Flip and Invisible Stalker. While one offers the possibility of early games beats the other is protected. Both play well with Runechanter's Pike it comes down to the question of is it better to run aggro/flying or mid-game untouchable?

Modern

CrimsonKing, 12 years ago

This deck is a MODERN deck now. I bought and added 3x Thoughtseize and a few other things. I'm trying to get into the modern format and thought this deck could benefit especially now that I can use Bloodghast and Gravecrawler!

I would really apreciate some feedback, about the deck, there are so many views but no comments. I hope you could tell me what is your opinion about the deck. Thanks

Is Duplicant better than Umezawa's Jitte for this deck? Should Defense of the Heart be added in the deck? What should I take it out?

Minor Update

shirtninja, 12 years ago

Playtesting went fantastically, and the deck performed exactly the way it was supposed to. I was at a casual Magic event at my local shop and went 3-1 overall (2-0, 1-2, 2-0, 2-1). I don't think I'll make any changes to the core deck for now, but may in the future as I face off against more standard-legal decks (only one other deck was standard legal, and I didn't play that person). I may make some minor changes to the sideboard, but for now I think I'll leave that alone, too. Overall I'm extremely happy with the deck and look forward to further play with it.

win conditions/ draw conditions

Cansk, 12 years ago

Ok, so I removed 1 island, 1 plains, 2 azorius charms, and all the silent departures. what went in was 4 Fiend Hunter 2 Cloudshift (for the fiend hunter combo) and 2 Angel of Serenity as a win condition late game.

JagonFel, 12 years ago

Simplified and eliminated some of the deck to make it more streamlined and effective at what it does.

swaz77, 12 years ago

I've put in Arbor Elves and Caravan Vigils for ramp now instead of the Gatekeeper Vines.

Sideboard

Rugbyfh10, 12 years ago

I uploaded the deck just to check what the card count was. Currently 67, obviously some of this stuff needs to either be dropped or side boarded. Any advice there is also appreciated. Also I need more one drops.

Availability Update

gyin, 12 years ago

Updated to fit what I'll actually be playing Friday and Game Day based upon card availability. I got most the cards I need but still am missing a few. Substitutes don't necessarily compromise the deck but might not have as much synergy. Only exception is Fencing Ace, which might actually be an upgrade over Precinct Captain, testing pending. Also updated sideboard based on what I can see myself losing to.
