In Political decks with White I like stuff like Pulsemage Advocate, Spurnmage Advocate, and Dawnbreak Reclaimer. I'm not sure if it's strictly necessary, but Flumph (I agree with Mr Hammer above) and World Queller are pretty political and can do useful things in some metas, but they can also be really dead cards in others. World Queller can be infuriating if a deck runs a small number of key cards of a certain type and thus can't protect them.

Make an Example is an interesting new card that can be a lot better than Soul Shatter, it also hits each opponent, doesn't target (you choose the pile though) and is a sacrifice effect. It's not an Instant, but it has big upside if a player doesn't already know what you need gone and can isolate that creature. Another cool new card is Protection Racket, I didn't notice a ton of cards that your deck is completely dependent on, if that is correct then Racket is a really useful card, either pinging each opponent or giving you cards. It's even more absurd if you can get out Exquisite Blood.

With your Commander I feel like Volcanic Offering would be interesting, you should be able to draw 2 cards off it via your Commander in addition to blowing up 2 lands that aren't yours.

There is an odd white Enchantment called Noble Purpose, which gives all your creatures Not-Lifelink, which stacks with Lifelink. There is also Axis of Mortality, which you can use to give your strongest opponent the lowest life total, possibly weakening them enough so that you can finish them off. There is also Martyr's Bond, which works with any sort of sacrifice effects, including fetch lands that synergize well with Sun Titan. Very good with Matyr's Bond is World Queller, which will trigger Bond to double up the effect. I like it's ability to hit permanent types that you might not even have, but hitting a type that you have but don't care about is also nice, very useful vs Voltron decks with very few creatures. Finally, I like Dawnbreak Reclaimer in a deck that cares about creatures and wants a big flyer. These are all fairly high MV, so keep that in mind, but Dawnbreak can be very politically useful, especially if you play vs non-budget decks.

Fireshrieker might be good for Liesa, Double Strike is really good on her, if you can giver her +1 power for one swing she's a 2 hit kill with just Double Strike, and she's already got flying.

A bit random, but Orzhov might like Conqueror's Galleon  Flip, which curves into Liesa and which Liesa can crew by herself. As long as a 2/10 can survive combat, you get ramp and some utility.

I would look at Tragic Arrogance over Kaya's Wrath, I always found that incredibly hard to cast, though I was Esper. Arrogance is a much bigger effect that is much harder on your opponents. There is also Promise of Loyalty if you are only worried about creatures, it not only gets rid of most, it prevents the survivors from coming after you.

Karn feels incredibly meh, which sucks because all of his cards in the past have at least had some use. I just don't feel like he brings enough to the table in this form. Maybe I'm wrong.

I'm going to agree on Plaza of Heroes. Definitely going to pick up one for my Slogurk once I build it irl, and it's gonna go in a lot of my online decks too.

Monstrous Warleech might have a place in my Scarab God deck. I don't know how well it scales in normal play, though. Seems a bit flimsy in anything competitive, but a good casual creature for sure.

Dragon Whelp taking up an uncommon slot again kinda miffs me, because I thought we were past that. It would be a flex on Wizard's part to print it at common, to show how the game has progressed and power-crept. But it's a thematic reprint, and I enjoy that it's in the set.

Enlist creatures, especially Keldon Flamesage, seem pretty good with cards like Slumbering Dragon. You kinda get to cheat some extra power in without putting in actual effort, which I'm a big fan of :)

Jaya seems pretty strong, as does Ajani. I'm really liking the Compleated mechanic that these planeswalkers have.

Shanna is just Well of Lost Dreams on a creature card. I don't know that it's going to take off, but it doesn't necessarily need to. Then again, Yarok, the Desecrated is a very popular commander despite just being Panharmonicon, and Shanna comes with an upside on cost and self-sufficency.

Sheoldred gets better every time I look at it. I love that she's now the cheapest Praetor they've printed, and yet it stands up strong to the rest. This one also doesn't seem to have the color pie breaking quality of the other Praetors, which I enjoy.

I don't see the draw of Shivan Devastator as compared to something like Voracious Hydra or Mistcutter Hydra, but then again it's red and I can't be unbiased about it because of that.

Sol-kanar's design is neat. Not mythic neat in my opinion, but neat.

Is it just me or is Sphinx of Clear Skies just... not good?

I really like the creativity of the World Spell and the whole idea of the Read Ahead mechanic. It's about time Sagas got another level of flavor after Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty's flip-Sagas and this is it.

Zur could actually be a Shrines commander now. Just saying. I know it's not five colors, but you'd still have access to nine Shrines-

Archangel of Wrath makes me smile. It's just so creative.

Astor, Bearer of Blades is another pretty good Equipment commander. Nothing exceptional, but a warm, friendly commander, and maybe something in Standard? Who knows?

The new Braids is World Queller on a stick with advantage. I really like it. I really could not care less about the fact that it "breaks the color pie". Black should have access to difficult enchantment removal. drops mic

I love the blue and green Defilers (the green one is a definite spot for my Vorinclex deck), and cannot wait to see the rest of the cycle.

I'm honestly just tired of seeing Phyrexian Sleeper. I see it every time I look through the spoilers lol

Guardian of New Benalia gives me Adanto Vanguard flashbacks. I'm afraid.

Squee, Dubious Monarch has escape, but because of rules it doesn't officially has escape. :(

I know I said I didn't care about color pie breaks earlier, but the Phasing of Zhalfir is an ungodly, terrible atrocity and it should immediately be banned in every format

Cut Down is very, very interesting. I forsee it being a Commander staple. I mean, it can take out most creatures in competitive formats.

Sengir Connosieur has the clause "This ability triggers only once per turn", therefore, I do not like it.

I don't know why, but the cycle of common off-color kicker cards make me feel... queasy. I guess I'm just not a big fan of color identities being largely determined by other pips in the text of the card.

Take up the Shield has Ajani being a bro on it, which makes me feel sad, ergo, I do not like it.


This set has a bunch of really cool and interesting designs! I'm excited for the rest of the spoilers to come ^^

First off I want to say thanks for your reply and interest in my deck. I'd like to take a second to follow up on your thoughts and say why I wanted to try what I did.

"You have some cards that don't add enough to your gameplan" section. 1. Greater Harvester probably isn't good, and I am willing to admit its something I put in here as a pet card. The general idea I had behind harvester being a sac outlet for flagstones (originally a 4 of) and any other random permanents I might want to lose. The upside I did see is that it will generally require a 2 for 1 to remove and if it happens to deal combat damage, all the better.

Regarding your suggestion of World Queller , it was a card I didn't even know existed. I like it and will consider it for future versions of the deck. Ideally, I would like the deck to be primarily black based with a small amount of white, if possible.

  1. Tergrid is just something to help break the symmetry of braids. I intend to use this primarily for the front side, but I've considered the back side if I ever wanted to try and go in a full pox or even Death Cloud style of build.

  2. Thalia taxing me a lot is a pretty accurate point. The only reason I really like thalia is for it's ability to block and slow an opponent down.

  3. I just went with leyline for the free aspect. Your suggestion of virtue is probably better, because I do want something to make my creatures reasonable clocks. It also helps against things like Plague Engineer .

  4. I got nothing on this one...just figured it fit the token theme.

  5. Coffers doesn't have any real point, but I think about it like a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx . Maybe I should consider that.

  6. Crucible is there to leverage braids some more. Side note, I meant to work in a Silent Clearing or two for card advantage.

  1. I like smallpox, but always feel like it would destroy the things I want to keep on board.

  2. This started as a 4 of, but I started trimming it back since I did not have a lot of plains in the deck.

  4. I don't mind having 4 since I really want to draw it and can sac/replay the next if needed.

  5. No real thoughts on this one. Gut feel is maybe 1-2 as a suppliment to bitterblossom.

"Your only early game disruption is Thoughtseize. This is definitely not enough." I think this is a pretty fair point to make and the one thing I was certainly feeling poor about posting this build. I will probably work some of those suggestions in somewhere.

Sideboard stuff, I'll consider after I get a decent main deck and feel for what I might need from there.

I've always wanted to build a braids modern deck, but casting a 4 drop in a smallpox deck always seemed a bit risky to me, while running braids without smallpox always seemed too slow. Here are my comments on your list:

You have some cards that don't add enough to your gameplan.

1) Greater Harvester looks cute, but it sucks. A static ability that only affects you, while the only way for it to cause your opponent to sacrifice stuff is to deal combat damage with a 5/6 vanilla creature without any evasion or trample or anything. Even with Braids wiping your opponent's board this card will definitely hurt you more than them. World Queller is still pretty expensive, but has a much nicer effect that lets you choose the permanent type. I probably wouldn't run either but having another 5 cmc Braids is cool.

2) Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip definitely seems too slow as well but maybe the flip side is okay. I doubt it though.

3) I know you run Thalia, Guardian of Thraben to tax your opponents and make it even harder for them to cast spells along with braids, but you have so many noncreature spells that it's probably not that good here either.

4) Leyline of the Meek synergizes with your token plan, but doesn't help you stretch out the game, deny your opponent resources, or create more tokens for yourself. If you really want to play something to buff your tokens I'd use Intangible Virtue , but I don't recommend it.

5) Timely Reinforcements definitely doesn't fit here. There's a reason it usually isn't played in decks with a lot of other token producers - because then its effect would be useless. Add in braids wiping the opponent's creatures and it becomes even worse. 4 Souls + 4 BB already seems like a good token package to me. It could maybe be a one-of in the sideboard though against hyper-aggressive decks.

6) Cabal Coffers is very questionable, since your land count is probably not going to be that high. If you are going to keep it, definitely add more Urborgs. Also 25 lands is a little high even for a pox deck like this one, I think 24 is the perfect number.

7) Crucible of Worlds does have nice synergy with sacrificing lands (and replaying Flagstones is pretty cool) but a lot of the time you would probably be sacrificing tokens instead. I don't think the card is that great here unless you have Flagstones of Trokair on the field, so if you need space for other cards I would recommend cutting these.

You should probably have more early game resource denial, lower your mana curve, and have more pieces that break symmetry.

1) Braids is a four drop, and doesn't have any impact on the board unless she survives a turn. You definitely need something early game that has a similar effect to braids. I don't think this deck can function without 4x Smallpox .

2) 4x Flagstones of Trokair . No questions asked. Also 2-3 Urborgs (esp if you keep Cabal Coffers). T1 Urborg, Inquisition/Thoughtseize into T2 flagstones + smallpox is backbreaking.

3) Bloodghast gives something to discard to pox, and you can repeatedly sacrifice it to braids as well. Nether Spirit is another option but I don't think it works well here.

4) Multiples of Braids suck, so I'd go down to 3 copies.

5) You could consider Sedgemoor Witch as a token producer instead of Bitterblossom. Not quite as sure about this one; it does something even if you only use the tokens to feed braids and gains life while BB loses life, but it also costs 1 more mana and acts as a juicy removal target. However, with braids on the field you already have removal targets so it probably isn't as much of an issue as it seems.

Your only early game disruption is Thoughtseize. This is definitely not enough.

1) I'd run 6-8 discard spells total between Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek . Honestly, In my opinion the best is a 4 IoK/2 Seize split, since IoK is better early game and you should be able to prevent your opponent from casting 4+ cmc spells anyways.

2) I understand that you are running Vindicate so you can blow up your opponent's lands, but you should definitely have some cheaper removal. I'd probably cut one and run 2-3 Fatal Push . Bloodchief's Thirst or Prismatic Ending could also work, just anything that isn't Path to Exile .

About the sideboard cards

1) Definitely Kataki, War's Wage for artifact hate, make sure to side out Crucible if you decide to keep it though. Stony Silence is another alternative that you can't sacrifice to pox or Braids.

2) Some boardwipes are probably needed, even though they don't synergize that well with tokens or braids. Without them, you'll just get run over by aggressive decks. Best ones are Damn and Bontu's Last Reckoning (first one is more of a 1-2x mainboard card, while second one is probably a 2-of in the sideboard).

3) Grave hate, Rest in Peace is best but Leyline of the Void also works.

4) Kor Firewalker for burn and/or other aggressive red-centered strategies (like rakdos aggro). Dragon's Claw also works if you don't want to sacrifice it to Smallpox, or if the WW is hard to cast.

Gontilordofmtg Thanks for commenting! I feel the life gain card are pretty important in this deck as Phyrexian Arena, Bitterblossom, Ancient Tomb, City of Brass, Mana Confluence, Spire of Industry, and Tarnished Citadel all do damage to me or make me lose life, and having that life gain cushion is important.

As for removal, a friend of mine always says "A fun commander deck is all questions and no answers", so all of my decks tend to just be very selfish and try to get ahead as quick as possible rather than worrying about other players decks.

However, I do have two ways of removing things, Capricious Efreet and also Dominus of Fealty + World Queller let me do this fun thing where I take any permanent and then immediately sacrifice what I took with the World Queller trigger.

I've considered adding the red siege enchantment, but I typically rely on Golos and hardly cast cards from my hand, nor top of the deck.

Consulate Crackdown? World Queller?

Thada Adel, Acquisitor is hilarious against artifact heavy decks. I have had every players Sol Ring on multiple occasions.
