Thought-Knot Seer Outside Eldrazi

Modern forum

So we all know about how broken a T2 Thought-Knot Seer is. But what about TKS outside of Eldrazi decks. After all, Vendilion Clique sees play outside faerie decks.

At the end of the day, TKS is a 4/4 for that exiles what your opponent needs.

This screams midrange staple to me. Standard Mardu is experimenting with them since it doesn't require the green splash of Siege Rhino.

But does this card have what it takes to run with the big guys? Four mana is a lot in modern, yet with twin out of the picture it makes tapping out on T4 less suicidal.

What are your thoughts on Thought-Knot Seer outside of Eldrazi Tribal? If it is too slow, perhaps the correct home for it is in a BGx deck that includes Eldrazi Temple to take advantage of Thought-Knot Seer and Matter Reshaper. Since colorless is essentially a sixth color, perhaps there is a midrange deck, akin to Jund and Junk?

Current Eldrazi decks go full in on Eldrazi, but why would you run chaff like Eldrazi Skyspawner when you could run wheat like Tarmogoyf?

Or perhaps BGx is the wrong way to go about it. Control decks would love a card that works as both disruption and a potential wincon. It can be blinked with Restoration Angel, or just wall Wild Nacatl for days after you stripped them of their Path to Exile.

In a world of Kommand, it seems very risky to run Batterskull. Should Blue Moon be running TKS?

TKS is many things. It is a bolt-proof body. It is a five turn clock. It is a Thoughtseize. It is highly splashable.

Why aren't we packing this guy into every midrange/control strategy? Are we too preoccupied with the 'Eldrazi' subtype to realize that he's still a great T4 play, especially if you just went from Tarmogoyf into Liliana of the Veil?

Or do you knot see this happening?

Death & Taxes is going to love it. They have the sources to cast it, and it adds a dimension that they don't have (namely, being big and disrupting the hand, as opposed to the board).

Meh. TKS isn't that good. Vclique is instant speed and less mana. TKS doesn't have either, with its only real advantage being that it's able to be discounted with the eldrazi lands. It's really not worth playing in anything other than Eldrazi.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a B/G/C deck. What would it use aside from TKS though?

I'm so glad this thing isn't around with Value Pod in the picture...

Ooooh, what about using it in Kiki Chord? It already runs Fire-Lit Thicket to cast it, and it can be Chord of Callinged up and blinked with Resto.

I don't think it's that good. Played against a hell of a lot of eldrazi recently and I never fear that card. It's a 4/4 for 4 which isn't good enough in modern and as soon as it dies you draw a card. Yes it exiles something but if you only have one card in hand to deal with the eldrazi deck by t4 then you've already lost.

I've actually found it's amazing in U Tron along with Conduit of Ruin

They both shore up some of U Tron's weaknesses at the midrange, and do what it wants to be doing anyway which is either controlling your opponent or tutoring for your pieces. The fact that both fulfill these roles while also giving you a sizable body on the field is excellent in U Tron.

My list here: MEGA-TRON

Thought-Knot Seer would work great in an Abzan shell I feel. Being able to run hand disruption alongside great removal with threats like Tarmogoyf, Siege Rhino, Liliana of the Veil, and Scavenging Ooze seems like a reasonable fit for TKS as a potential 2 of.

It's actually decent. Not as good as Siege Rhino, Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip, or Pia and Kiran Nalaar, but still a viable option as a turn 4 play. The main thing with that card, of course, is when you play it on turn 2 with the Eldrazi lands. That's when the card becomes completely broken.

Death and Taxes might be interested. It's fitting with their plan, and with all the blink in the deck, they could really sculpt their hand. And it has ways to easily get colorless.
