Characters Who Have Not Yet Been Depicted On Cards

Most of the major characters from the stories have been depicted as legendary creatures in the card game, but there are some who have not yet been given their own cards, which I find to be very unfortunate, given their prevalence in the story.

Therefore, this thread is to discuss characters who have not yet been given their own cards at the time of this post.

WotC has thankfully been doing an excellent job of portraying major characters from the early days of this game in recent supplemental sets, most notably the Commander sets. As an example, the printing of Tawnos and Xantcha in the most recent Commander set was very welcome, and long overdue, considering that they are major characters in the story of Urza, which was one of the earliest stories in the game. Therefore, I feel that it is only a matter of time before cards of Ashnod and Gix, two more important characters from Urza's story, are printed.

In this article, today, Mark Rosewater stated that the cards of Gerrad and Volrath were very underwhelming, considering their importance in the story, and he strongly hinted that WotC may print a red/white Gerrard and a black/blue Volrath in future supplemental products.

Many players have long wondered why there was no black/white legendary angel on Innistrad, and the story confirmed that there had once been such an angel, before Avacyn supposedly killed her, so I expect that she shall eventually appear in a future Commander set.

What does everyone else have to say about this subject? Who are characters who have not yet been depicted on cards whom you would like to see depicted as such?

I hope they never give Urza a Black-bordered card. I feel that no card will ever truly do the character justice.

I would like to see a Zagorka card. Karona, False God has always been one of my favourites, and, while we have two of her three component parts (Akroma, Angel of Wrath and Phage the Untouchable), I’ve always wished her third had an in-game representation.

I have long been interested in the black/white Innistrad Angel, and hope it someday sees a printing.

Yawgmoth may be one of the biggest characters not to have a card - and it would be cool to see an Urza planeswalker outside of the Un-sets.

Lord Windgrace recently saw a printing - I wonder if we will see the likes of Guff, Tevesh Szat, Kristina of the Woods, Daria, or Bo Levar from the Titans story.

Leshrac is a big baddie who would be cool to see.

One guy who will almost certainly never see a printing, but who rivals if not surpases Urza (at least canonically) in terms of sheer power is Taysir of Rabiah. I doubt he will ever get a card because he is from Rabiah, but it would be really cool.

Well, they recently did a yawgmoth card (Yawgmoth's Vile Offering), though I have no idea if the guy in the forefront is Urza or Gerrard or someone else. So an Urza card of a similar manner is inevitable, I think.

They have been doing updated Weatherlight crew cards (Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist compared to Mirri, Cat Warrior, the new version is so much spot on), so I think they should do a lot more of those.

I feel like if they want to explore Gix, Ashnod, Volrath, and Gerard again, they would have to have some sort of past block or supplemental product. However what I feel would be really neat is printing Gerard and Volrath anew in a past-themed block, and supporting them with an appropriately (and unfortunately) past-themed product: a duel deck.

I don’t think we will see a Taysir card either, but it would be pretty fun to have a cycle (likely spread over a couple sets) of Taysir walkers, one for each colour. Then make it so their combined +1 abilities make a game-winning infinite combo.

A fully realised Taysir, however, I see as similar to Urza and Yawgmoth - by making a card, Wizards has to balance “power of the lore” with “is the mana cost prohibitive, and, are there ways to cheat this into play?”

This makes it very difficult to do justice to extraordinarily powerful entities, such as Emrakul, the Aeons Torn lose a fight to the non-legendary Impervious Greatwurms of the worlds. Personally, I prefer the old way - have cards that reference these extra-powerful beings, but have them be too powerful for their own cards. It adds a certain mystique to their characters.

Boza - Urza's Ruinous Blast would be the “card of a similar manner” to Yawgmoth's Vile Offering.

Interesting topic. As wizards did more and more kawigawa characters in the last commander sets in Kaseto, Orochi Archmage, Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow and O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami, I really hope for more of those. Yuriko and kaseto aren't original characters, but still pretty cool. I'd love to see kyodai, the humanoid embodyment of That Which Was Taken. She's a lookalike of michiko konda and the child of o-kagachi. What a great card that would make. Awesome.

Isn’t Blind Seer supposed to depict Urza? Or is that just not true?

December 4, 2018 11:06 a.m.

Boza says... #9

pizzagod13 - It does, but it does not really encapsulate the power of urza. Blind Seer is basically a Hill Giant, where as Urza can do things like destroy continents, as cdkime mentioned, depicted on Urza's Ruinous Blast.

Marit Lage... I know it has a token but I feel that's not representative of the potential this chick has and not a true 'card'. I want the 'is it an Eldrazi Titan' argument to be put to rest... and I want the answer to be no.

I personally feel it would make for an awesome story arc if Nicol Bolas was either killed or dealt with (the latter being more likely) and Merit Lage became the main villain.

Dude I think Marit Lage needs to go to Innistrad and tear a hole in that moon. Emrakul needs to meet his Promised End.

I really wanna see a card for the third angel of Inistrad (the B/W one) but I have absolutely no clue how WotC might print her, outside of being a commander supplemental product or something.
I'd also like to see a card to represent the Phyrexian oil. Maybe something that gives you control of target permanent for super cheap but has some sort of downside. Maybe the permanent loses all activated abilities but gains an upkeep trigger to spread to one of your other permanents. Eventually, the result is that itll choke all of your lands out and stop them from producing mana. That's just my wishful thinking though.

There already is an oil card Glistening Oil. This is the oil you speak of.

pizzagod13... that's extremely helpful, Thank you.

Can't say I'm happy with how WotC handled the oil... but it makes some sense I guess. Very underwhelmed by the card itself :P

I hope we one day get a card to represent the Demon Leviathan that Nicol Bolas fought as one of the original duels between Planeswalker. Does that Walker even have a stated name?

I also feel that the card of Selenia, Dark Angel is very underpowered and fails to properly capture her importance to the story, so I would like to see a new card of her in a future supplemental set.

Massacre Girl is a member of the Rakdos guild on Ravnica who has been mentioned in the flavor text of numerous cards and several stories on the main website, but has not yet been depicted in a card (although most players believe that the woman in Deviant Glee is her). Mark Rosewater hinted on his Tumblr account that she may eventually appear in a supplemental set, so I would very much like to see her, there, although that raises the question of why she has not been given a card in either the second or third Ravnica blocks.

I always assumed that Massacre Girl was a role, not a person.

ZendikariWol, that would explain why there have been two characters (Exava and Judith) who could have been her, but have not been.
