New Ob Noxilis in reanimator?

Here is the link to the card http://mythicspoiler.com/m15/cards/obnixilisunshackled.html

What do you guys think about him in reanimator? Iona and grisslebrand are popular targets and I feel like he could be a strong contender.

Also I could have formatted this better and wrote more but I'm about to board my plane. I would love to see some serious discussions on him when I get off the plane;)

Griselbrand is popular as his card draw ability can often win you the game in a single turn. Iona is the same - against certain decks its an instant win. Nothing that he does creates instant win situations so I'm not so sure.

Most people are thinking about his effects on tutors. I think its funny how he punishes people for like Rampant Growth and fetchlands. The problem is that with a massive mana cost you can't cast him early enough for it to be worthwhile. Whilst you can get him out early with reanimator - there are better targets, as discussed above.

I've just found my new Demon Commander, sorry Nefarox.

Crap, misclicked.

As for Legacy and reanimation purposes, the card doesn't outright win the game like Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur or Griselbrand , but it seems really okay against Fetchlands.

I'd try it out.

If he's legit, and we do get Fetches soon, this is our punishment for it. lol

Seems real good in the face of #Fetches2015, but it doesn't seem too good for any other standard purposes.

In legacy reanimator, he's probably pretty beast, but he just doesn't have the devastating effect that things like Griselbrand , Sire Of Insanity , or iona have. He's definitely one of the best mono black commanders to be printed though.

He isn't a good enough target for Reanimator. Iona, is an instant win against mono-colored decks and Griselbrand is such huge card advantage that it is ridiculous. You never want to rely upon your opponent to hurt themselves enough for you to win. So all you can count on from Ob Noxillis is a 5 turn clock that keeps them from tutoring. Griselbrand is a 2 turn clock by himself because you can count on him to consistently allow you to have him plus another creature 6 power or greater out.

Gidgetimer - griselbrand is an instant win as well. Hit them for 7, draw 7 cards, exile Simian Spirit Guide , cast red spell to give extra combat, hit for 7, draw 7 cards, exile Simian Spirit Guide , use red to give extra combat......

Gidgetimer says... #10

ChiefBell which red card that gives an extra combat are you talking about? Seize the Day is the closest one I can find to what you are describing with only needing 1 red each time it is cast but you would still need to make 5 additional mana on turn 2. I've never seen a deck list that runs Simian Spirit Guide either, so I would be interested to see the list. I'm used to the general U/B Griselbrand , Iona, Shield of Emeria , Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur , Tidespout Tyrant build.

Seems legit, if maybe a little slow.

slow? It all happens on like T2!

I definitely think he could see play in Reanimator, but not just Legacy. Modern could use him. Gifts Control might play him.

Gidgetimer says... #16

Pretty sure that was turn 1, But she had to wait till after he took his turn. What if he were running Belcher. She doesn't even run blue to Force of Will . Soooo slow. < /sarcasm >

I'm so pumped for this card. I love Ob Nixilis so much.

June 23, 2014 12:25 p.m.

mckin says... #19

Not legacy. Maybe a sideboard card against pod for gifts style decks that can reanimate it turn 4, he just isbt reliable enough to be good. Elesh norn, griselbrand, iona, etc are all so much better at "winning" the game. If anything id play him with 4 ghost quarter so hit lands

DMR says... #20

I don't want to be a debby downer, but outside of EDH, this will see no competitive play outside of fringe decks. Reanimator has better targets, like the aforementioned. Also, Path to Exile and Ghost Quarter have the MAY clause on them, so good luck forcing them to search their library consistently, outside of things like Maralen of the Mornsong .

I still feel like after casting grisslebrand, having him to also reanimate would give you an even more consistent board state. He isn't the first thing I would reanimate necessarily and he would be a one of at most in the main or more likely in the side. Anyways I see all of your points.

What do yuk think about a target for dread return. The same thing?

for dread return youre targets are either Flayer of the Hatebound or the guy that gives everyone haste, letting you win not open your opponent keeps fetching

My thoughts on Dread Return is "why are you running such a slow reanimation card in legacy".

My thoughts on Ob Noxilis are unfortunately that he is just too far down the list of what I would like to reanimate for him to be worth while. I mean he is after the big 4 and then I would take things like Sphinx of the Steel Wind , Blazing Archon , and Ashen Rider over him too.

The card seems fun as hell but I don't see him being on many "Top 10 Most Busted creatures in Magic" lists and that is basically what Legacy Reanimator is.

mckin says... #27

Dread return is played in oops all spells and dredge

Mckin I understand where he is used. I wasn't thinking and brought it up but changed my mind afterwords

mckin says... #29

That was @gidgetimer my bad

June 23, 2014 5:40 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #30

I thought we were talking about Reanimator mckin that is where my question about the slow reanimation was focused. I am unfamiliar with all the decks in legacy and would have don a search on others outside of Reanimator which is the deck I am comfortable conversing if I had known.

My thing on Dread Return is that if the game has gone long enough for that to be castable you are doing Reanimator wrong.

June 23, 2014 5:57 p.m.

julianjmoss says... #31

Gidgetimer you are correct u was just thinking out loud. As for reanimator I feel like grisslebrand into Ob would just seal the deal

June 23, 2014 8:30 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #32

Griselbrand into Tidespout Tyrant is my preferred way to play.

And for those of you that enjoy multiplayer, Collective Voyage . G to have each opponent lose 10? Yes please. Even at X being 0 the search and shuffle effects are mandatory.
