MTG has a lot of trash cards, I know and have three of the worst, magosi the waterveil, steamflogger boss, and mindless null. If you have any more trash cards post 'em.

cardcoin says... #2

The worst recent card would have to be Halo Hunter ... No one will play with card:Death's Shadow either...

Zylo says... #3

Holy crap, Steamflogger Boss is completely worthless and must have been a retard baby of the design team. The orcale text even says itself "the is no game meaning for assemble," not to mention there's not such thing as a contraption either. :P

Oh and there's only two creatures in existence that have the rigger creature type.

LoL @ cardcoin, I know somebody who actually uses card:Death's Shadow, but his deck works to keep his life total low, but somehow still surviving, usually around 5-8 life. I don't know of any trash cards off-hand, I would have to look through mine and see.

Terra Eternal is pretty bad.

September 12, 2010 1:16 p.m.

Zylo says... #6

Umm.... No it's not. You just have to use it correctly, like in a land deck. Having Terra Eternal out makes every zendikon that much better.

One other card that is annoying me is Selective Memory ... It's the fact that there is 0 interaction cards that can target the Exile Zone makes this card useless for specific search mechanics... for now.

Even having false hope with Spawnsire of Ulamog was dashed because it only affects cards outside of the game... Exiled is still considered inside the game. :(

Mudhole sucks, they even make fun of it on collector protector (who also isnt very good), check out divining witch to, lotus guardian is horrible, also all of the kamigawa packs were embarrassing, idk i just used random card on gatherer a lot and found these, what else do you guys have?

No, no one knows because it doesn't exist. :P

sporkife says... #13

okay, seriously. card:Death's Shadow, Magosi, the Waterveil , Halo Hunter , Selective Memory , and Rod of Ruin are actually occasionally useful (the first the most so, but I've seen the others used well).

Mudhole , on the other hand...

So, shortly after I started playing Magic (this was shortly before the release of Darksteel, I think), I went by one of the local stores and picked up a tournament pack and a couple boosters of Odyssey. Now, back then, as a brand-new player (I started just after Mirrodin came out), i had some pretty skewed ideas about what cards were good and what were bad - everybody did when they were just starting out. I figured out pretty fast, though, that Mudhole was pretty bad. Why? I opened one of em as the rare in one of the boosters. Not so happy. Then I opened the tournament pack. Back then, a foil card replaced a card of equal rarity in the pack - common for common, uncommon for uncommon, rare for rare. One of the 3 rares in the tournament pack - replacing another rare, mind you - was a foil Mudhole . I still have it, just to remind me of how stupid some of this stuff is.

September 12, 2010 9:07 p.m.

Honeymomo is right! Steamflogger Boss is going to kick some major ass once it gets reprinted in the new Mirrodin!

(Actually, based on the card art, namely the style of the goblin, and the fact that the only other rigger ever has was in Fifth Dawn, THE BOSS will most likely be reprinted in a Mirrodin based set.)

As for some other cards...

Halo Hunter is STILL a 6 powered fear guy for 5 mana. If lightning bolt wasn't around. he'd actually be really good.

card:Death's Shadow is actually quite good when paired with as-nauseam as can be seen here: http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/boab/80

I actually have a deck that mills for the win using Selective Memory , Skyward Eye Prophets , Hedron Crab , and Tideforce Elemental . Its hilarious.

Divining Witch is good at digging through your deck for combo pieces.

The number of drafts I have won using a tabled Rod of Ruin is embarassing.

Also, Black Lotus is easily the worst card ever. I mean seriously. Its not even blue!

September 12, 2010 9:29 p.m.

epicmanmcman says... #15

That mill deck sounds like a cool combo, and never ever say divining witch is good, EVER. i would rather use it as itchy scratchy toilet paper than a card in my deck.

September 12, 2010 9:42 p.m.

sporkife says... #16

uh...epicmanmcman, you do realize that Divining Witch is a Demonic Consultation on a stick, right?

September 12, 2010 9:56 p.m.

WiseHeart65 says... #17

Hellcarver Demon ...I'm not even gonna say much...this card sux. So desperate. And so easy to be more helpful to an opponent than to u. U suck Hellcarver Demon you suck so bad....roflmao.

September 12, 2010 11:56 p.m.

epicmanmcman says... #18

Sorry if I offended anyone lol, in my opinion divining witch is bad, I see how its good though, so sorry.

September 13, 2010 2:34 p.m.

yeaGO says... #19

a classic: Raging River

September 13, 2010 3:48 p.m.

Wood Elemental if only for the art.

September 13, 2010 5:18 p.m.

Zylo says... #21

Okay, here's a big problem I'm seeing with people's postings. Most of these cards are really old, well guess what, every set is slightly better than the last and it's always been that way, so some cards you can't say are trash because for their set they really were not that bad.

September 13, 2010 6:03 p.m.

Im pretty sure Mudhole was ALWAYS a bad card...

September 13, 2010 9:27 p.m.

Zylo says... #23

Okay, yes, Mudhole was always bad lol. But not a lot of these.

September 13, 2010 9:34 p.m.

sporkife says... #24

Mudhole is, was, and always will be horrendous.

...I'm going to collect them.

...once I actually get a physical binder together with 3-hole sleeve sheets.

September 13, 2010 9:35 p.m.

I decided that I was going to collect the card Nix . I currently have 8, but I just started this week. :P

And Sporknife, I have a Mudhole , So I'll save it special for you. ;)

September 13, 2010 10:09 p.m.

sporkife says... #26

:D

hehe...Nix is pretty awesome in TS block limited, actually, with all that suspend running around.

September 13, 2010 10:14 p.m.

squire1 says... #27

so many good cards people hate. The only one here that is bad is Mudhole which had a purpose in its day

September 14, 2010 5:45 p.m.

squire1 says... #28

and i may be wrong about Mudhole it may be awesome. I have too think about it

September 14, 2010 5:46 p.m.

Zylo says... #29

I'm with you squire1 , only a couple cards here are actually bad.

September 14, 2010 6:23 p.m.

epicmanmcman says... #30

Then what do you think is really bad? (besides mudhole)

September 14, 2010 6:29 p.m.

sporkife says... #31

It's really hard to find truly bad cards...I mean, honestly, if Safe Haven were in standard I would consider running it in my MBC. Why? Because it's removal for Abyssal Persecutor .

(Realistically, I'd just jam it in somewhere regardless of whether or not it made the deck better, but that's just me.)

September 14, 2010 6:36 p.m.

squire1 says... #32

not sure good question.

every card has a purpose, sometimes it is just to answer other cards.

Mudhole helps to shut down loam decks

just like Combust is a specific answer for Baneslayer Angel

Break Open can get rid of a 2/2 if you are playing someone that has Zoetic Cavern splashed, or forces a morph triggered ability to go off when your opponent does not want it to.

Scornful Egotist can be used for a great early Sacrifice or Homarid Spawning Bed or Erratic Explosion

Nix seems lame unless you combine it with 4x Helm of Awakening against almost any deck from scars it is awesome. And it was a good response to Force of Will and Pact of Negation type spells. Hell how pissed would you be if you saced 3 creatures and paid 6 life for card:Demon of Death's Gate and you pay nothing to counter it.

That said all of these are situational and not for your average player or for competitive play.

Johnny forever!

September 14, 2010 9:31 p.m.

I never said Nix was bad! I love it! Thats why I collect them ;P

And Mudhole may shutdown a Loam deck, but so does tornod's-crypt and that costs zero!

Although I do agree with you Squire1, every card has its purpose, even if there is a card taht does it better. Its just a matter of opening your mind and becoming a little less spike!

Johnny FTW!

September 14, 2010 9:49 p.m.

Zylo says... #34

Us Johnny's need to unite!

September 14, 2010 11:28 p.m.

Qysas says... #35

Um please explain to me again what the difference between a spike and a Johnny is again?

Also currently in the new sets I cant really think of a truly bad card. Only those that fit competitive and those that fit casually. I haven't seen any truly bad cards yet.

September 15, 2010 12:33 a.m.

Zylo says... #36

Go here: http://tappedout.net/mtg-questions/what-is-timmy-and-johnny/

I didn't know either for a long time.

September 15, 2010 10:42 a.m.

Alzhander says... #37

Mudhole is a pretty bad card, as most people have mentioned, but no one has mentioned that is does have a use. It kills decks that rely on dumping cards into its graveyard and playing the lands through Crucible of Worlds . I mean granted there are better cards can do the same thing, but whatever, lol.

September 17, 2010 12:46 p.m.

Zylo says... #38

Yes, but that's the problem. In order for it to be good you'd have to know that your opponent is using a technique like that. squire1 made a deck that uses Mudhole and it's not terrible lol.

September 17, 2010 12:56 p.m.

yeaGO says... #39

I'm sure this thread is fodder for his article series.

September 17, 2010 1:05 p.m.

heck yeah it is, Raging River looks fun

September 17, 2010 1:07 p.m.

Selective Memory and Hellcarver demon gets you six Eldrazi. Hardly bad IMO

As title suggests looking to trade 3x Bitterblossoms for 2x Dark Confidants. (Could be either Ravnica or Modern Masters)

And whatever else to make up small difference. If interested let me know and I could look at your wants to see if I have something for difference.
