New to modern - please help me improve my deck

Deck Help forum

I'm new to modern, I thought of the colors I like to play the most and I think a WRB midrange/control deck would suit me nicely.

This is what I have so far just using the cards I own:

Dega Modern

I know it's a pretty bad deck right now and the mana base needs lot of work but I want your opinion before buying more cards.dark confidant is a bit too expensive and so are the fetches. These are some cards I thought might be a good acquisition for the deck:2x Blood Baron of Vizkopa 2x Bloodgift Demon 2x Dark Tutelage 2x Hero of Bladehold 3x Inquisition of Kozilek 2x Lingering Souls 1x Path to Exile 2x Phyrexian Arena 2x Sorin, Lord of Innistrad 2x Terminate 1x Thundermaw Hellkite 2x Tidehollow Sculler 2x Zealous Persecution 2x Baneslayer Angel Which of these should be my priority?Would a deck like this be at all viable?I'm already working on getting shocklands for the deck.

Thanks in advance for any help!

If you want to run Dark Tutelage , you should probably top your curve out at four, so you have less of a chance of killing yourself trying to get cards. As such, it might actually be better to not run it.

More so, your curve is just really high for modern. a lot of these cards are more suited to a standard deck, since modern is such a fast format. That being said, I like that you've topped out your curve at five instead of going higher, and certainly some of these will help.

The removal package in your deck actually looks pretty good as-is. You might want to look at Wear / Tear in the side, since you currently can only deal with creatures, but you seem to have the bases covered there. The one suggestion I would make is to switch the Tribute to Hunger s for Devour Flesh . Three mana is a lot, but the max 4 life really isn't.

As far as planeswalkers go, Ajani Vengeant is great. Chandra, the Firebrand not so much.

As such, it's mostly just the creatures and lands that you want to be looking at. You have a lot of colour-intensive creatures, and not much colour fixing. The Vampire Nighthawk s are great, but require more black mana than you can consistently get right now. More copies of Dragonskull Summit and friends could help, without breaking the bank too much. Also, you might want to try out Lavaclaw Reaches . Sure it enters tapped, but it can be a guy when you run out of gas.

I definitely recommend Tidehollow Sculler , since you currently don't have any proactive plays before turn 3, and this also helps with control. You might want to look into more low-CMC options, such as Young Pyromancer .

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I'm already trying to get more lands and a Phyrexian Arena .I just get the feeling that the deck doesn't have a win-con, I'm not sure 2x Olivia Voldaren will do it.Shouldn't I have another finisher?

Not really. Just swing with whatever creatures you happen to have. If you're going for a midrange build, certainly include a couple big fatties. Past that, though, finishers aren't really that big of a deal. You might want something that dodges most of their removal, such as that Sorin, Lord of Innistrad in your maybeboard, but any creature is enough to win.

Granted, I am a control player, not a midrange player, so take this with a grain of salt.

Sorry for the double post, but now that I'm looking at Blood Baron of Vizkopa , it actually dodges almost all the removal you'll see in modern. I haven't seen it in action, but it might be worth a shot if you have a couple copies.

I'm more of a control player, so I want this to be more of a controlish deck. But every control deck needs a win con, either planeswalker or creatures.Ajani Vengeant can definitely win games, I don't know about Sorin, Lord of Innistrad , but I do like that card.I thought about Blood Baron of Vizkopa which can gain life and avoids most removal in the format.Another option is Thundermaw Hellkite which has immediate impact.Baneslayer Angel is also something that I've considered. What do you think?

I don't own any of copies of him.Should I get him or would a Thundermaw Hellkite or Baneslayer Angel be better?

I'm actually of the philosophy that control decks DON'T need a wincon, as long as they have something that can deal damage. For example, my Grixis Control deck often wins just with attacking with Creeping Tar Pit . If you can control well enough, any creature that can get in the red zone will do.
