Hello!

I've got the weird idea into my head to build a Queen Marchesa deck with a heavy zombie focus. However, I've trouble getting it started at all, are there any recommendations you can give me?

That's an interesting idea. Honestly Orzhov and Rakdos don't offer much for a zombie theme. It can still be awesome though, here's my suggestion:

Start with wheels, you want to run a lot of them including some like Shattered Perception as this will greatly speed the deck up. I'd say around 10 to 12 is a good number and don't forget Waste Not/Liliana's Caress to capitalize on the wheels like 9 Wheel of Fortune, Memory Jar, etc. Don't forget Past in Flames also, you will need to reuse those wheels!

Next I'd focus on recursion, Patriarch's Bidding, Living Death and the like are golden. I'd only use one single target, Reanimate, because Lord of the Undead and Unholy Grotto fill this role pretty well.

Lastly I'd focus on a few removal like Anguished Unmaking and wraths. Lots of wraths, probably 6 to 8.

All in all, the deck should run fine though it will probably win less than a Dimir list since a lot of zombie combos include blue. You'll still win through a long grindy games of Attrition though if you disrupt combo decks. Things like Torpor Orb and Damping Matrix may help. Anyways good luck!

Thank you for your quick reply!

Unfortunately I do have to look at my budget a bit while making this, so Wheel of Fortune itself, while something I would want to play, is not something I can reallistically afford.

Waste Not was something that had me look to discard from my opponent's hand, though I hadn't thought of replacing everyone's hand entirely.

However, I've also plans to work the Monarch theme still, with Skyline Despot and others taking advantage of being the Monarch. Any tips for that?

It's a neat idea and it has been shown in the lore that Marchesa uses zombies for protection so it's on point for flavor too! Black will be the core of your deck since a large majority of your best zombies are in that color.

Orzhov is actually kind of awesome at reanimation with cards like Immortal Servitude, Debtors' Knell, Necromancer's Covenant, Obzedat's Aid, and Athreos, God of Passage.

Red is a tough color to support a zombie theme since there are only a few good zombies in Rakdos colors. Wheel effects are nice though as they can fill your graveyard for mass reanimation.

I run a more pillow-fort/stax style Queen Marchesa deck and very rarely do people fight for the crown as much as I would like. That being said, it never hurts to have some protection in case your meta is different. Ghostly Prison, No Mercy, and other spells that make it tougher to attack you are solid support for monarchy. Skyline Despot is a wonderful little bomb. Since you're running zombies and will have reliable recursion, you could run a card like Smokestack and be fine.

Best of luck with the deck! Sounds like a cool idea!

Thanks for the ideas!

This is what I've come up with, and I'll test it irl as soon as possible and then update with the results: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/queen-of-the-dead-3/
