Looking for a fun, new janky commander + tips on building fun, janky decks

Commander Deck Help forum

So, my decks tend to be pretty straightforward, somewhat tuned with fairly clear strategies in mind. For example, deck:Roonmaster is pretty focused. Or, Ojutai's Mystification is really focused too. But I'm looking for a commander that opens me up to more janky interactions and combos. My friend has a cool Breya deck in that style that's a lot of fun. So for one, I'm looking for a commander to build jank. Two, I guess some tips on building more jank would be helpful too. I was thinking maybe Mairsil, the Pretender , but he seems kinda linear, or is there a way to use him more as utility for a janky deck? I like the idea of blue/red because of the cool instants and sorceries.

I play a roughly 75% Mairsil deck, Should I Pretend This Or That?, it is my favorite deck with a multitude of ways to win and do weird stuff. It is kinda hard to explain how weird he is without showing you... Yes you can do the normal well established combos, some of which are in my deck, and just win many games. Or you can run silly things like Chaos Wand . I also have a large list of things I've used and things I'm considering here MTG List: Mairsil Possibilities. On occasion I've searched for every grixis creature and artifact with a : on it... It is a rather massive search but it finds some neat things now and then.

I suppose most games with him start pretty linear. You want to try and draw extra cards or mill yourself asap. After that you hopefully have a good cage target that can flicker/bounce. From there however things really open up and you can just use whatever abilities you want.

I have DrukenReaps decklist for Mairsil, the Pretender saved to my folders because even though I don't play black, I liked the decklist THAT much, so I definitely recommend that as a place to start.

My favourite kind of decks are lanky things that somehow work sometimes, and as of right now, my favourite deck to play at the moment is my Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer list: Get the most out of your Myr in 3 easy steps -- it is completely ridiculous, and mainly centred around making a buttload of tokens, turning them all into Utvara Hellkite or Angrath's Marauders and going lanky as hell.

Thantis, the Warweaver , super-fun & bizarre combos. No linear quality, because there are no obvious shoehorned commander synergies to follow. I'm excited for Insidious Dreams into Bolas's Citadel & other things.

I recommend Ramos, Dragon Engine . Ramos can do anything!! He synergizes with counters, multicolored cards, hes an artifact, can voltron into a win, even gives you access to all 5 colors. Mine is doing all the above plus assembling contraptions. Its definitely completely nonlinear and janky too haha.

Agreed! Ramos can do about anything. No glaring strategy that is "strictly better"

I think that easiest way to do this is to start with a restriction. For example, my Saskia the Unyielding deck started out as a deck that had to jam as many legendary creatures as possible. So, the deck The Legend of Saskia was born and is always updated.

The Muldrotha, the Gravetide deck I made recently started out as exactly two cards - the commander and Villainous Wealth . I wanted to make the deck best suited to win via VW. So, the deck Muldrotha the Wealthy was born and is constantly updated (god there are so many good cards for EDH in those colors I have enough playables to make 3 different decks).

So, this is my advice - restrict yourself, then push those boundaries to the max.

Honestly one good way to build a janky deck is it just start digging through your collection and pick out all the cards you think would be fun with a commander, then use those spicy cards in about as focused a deck's bones as you want.

DrukenReaps def gonna check that out, thanks!

Mj3913 that looks wild lol. Not sure if I want another 5color deck, but thanks

Gleeock I'm sitting on one, but it looks kinda challenging and aggressive. Any chance you have a decklist?

Rzepkanut I literally just sold my Ramos lol. Plus, I already have a 5 color, so idk about him.

Boza ok, I like that advice a lot. Especially bc Villainous Wealth is one of my favorite cards. Used to run a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant deck, but I switched to Karador, Ghost Chieftain . But maybe I'll switch back to Sidisi, or check out Muldrotha? I think that would be more fun for me tbh. Def gonna look at your builds. Thanks!

Demarge definitely agree, and I have a few in mind

If you want to make a unique deck that has like 3 or 4 ways to win but none are great check out Tasigur. I built a Tasigur dredge deck that uses Villainous Wealth and Lab Man as Wincon's. But the challenge of the dredge gameplan is cool.
