My LD deck did well tonight!

Round 1 -- Jeskai Black 2-0

Game 1: I was holding a Mountain, a Forest, a Cinder Glade, a Hedron Crawler and at least one Demolish card. I drew into a Den Protector and knew I had a good set up because he was going to let me pull that land destruction card back into my hand.

By by turn 3 I took out a prairie stream and apparently he needed that white color because it completely slowed him down. He kept putting down fetch lands and pinging himself and I kept hitting his lands and so he couldn't play any creatures. I remember he took out my protector and my crawler with some Fiery Impulses and he had a few Smoldering Marshes out, so it took a while to stop that. All I had left was a Leaf Gilder and I just kept swinging with it. He conceded the game.

Game 2: I had a good set up again and he did too. He put out a Mantis Rider and It was going to be tough taking out his lands while he had a free swing at me every turn. I put out Pyromancer's Goggles and took out two lands, and he had me down to 8 life. I was being patient to see if he had another creature, and he did. It was a small creature, but I had a Draconic Roar in hand and I wiped them both out because the Goggles made a copy. Next turn I dropped my big boy in: Terra Stomper and it was game. I never pulled a Crumble to Dust against him, and Mirror Pool never came out either. That would have been awesome.

Round 2: vs. Eldrazi deck 2-1

Game 1: First game I pulled a ramper and a Nissa's Pilgrimage and by turn 3 I had a Crumble to Dust. I took out his Shrines. I had to tell him they were exiled and he did not look happy. I must have hit about four land destruction cards in a row and he just couldn't pull anything out. I put out a Hedron Crawler, a Leaf Gilder, a Den Protector, and a Dragonmaster Outcast but I was waiting for that 6th land. He zapped the dragonmaster with a Warping Wail. I figured that was going to happen. He got tired of me destroying his lands and he conceded the match with 11 life points.

Game 2: My land destruction started slowly this game and it cost me. I only managed to play one Volcanic Upheaval by turn 5 or 6 so he got out two Hangarback Walkers and then he pulled a Oblivion Sower. He exiled a dragonmaster and three lands, and there wasn't much I could do but watch him swing at me.

Game 3: I took out two Draconic Roar cards and sided in two Ravaging Blaze cards to deal with his larger creatures in case he managed to get one out on the board again. I had two rampers but he exiled them with Warping Wails, and then I played a Nissa's Pilgrimage and brought out Terra Stomper by turn 6. My opponent was completely caught off guard by that creature. I remember I had a choice after the Stomper was out. I could have destroyed one of his lands or I could make a copy of my Terra Stomper if I waited for the next turn -- I had two Mirror Pools on the field but one had just entered so it was tapped. I decided to wait. He had a few lands, I think two hedron crawlers, and a lamp -- he tapped everything to play his Oblivion Sower but he used it to block my Stomper. Next turn, I swung with two Leaf Gilders and the Stomper, but he only had one blocker so it was game.

Round 3 -- vs a blue/white control deck 0-2

Game 1: I had a great hand, but he was playing counter spells. Right off the bat, he negated my Crumble to Dust on turn 3. Then he countered my Den Protector. Then he brought out his Dragonlord Ojutai and I was a sitting duck. I mean, it was going well for awhile. I snuck in a Nissa's Pilgrimage and played a Terra Stomper, which can't be countered, but when I swung, he took it out with an Immolating Glare.

Game 2: This game was terrible. My opening hand seemed fine. I had a Forest, a Mirror Pool and a Hedron Crawler and a Leaf Gilder and a Volcanic Upheaval and a Terra Stomper, and some other cards, but it went completely wrong. I never drew a mountain and all the cards I drew required mountains. I ended the game with Volcanic Upheavals, Ravaging Blazes, and Dragonmaster Outcasts in hand, along with the Stomper for which I never pulled enough mana. It was a terrible way to lose -- mana screwed.

Overall, I did much better than I expected. I knew the Jeskai Deck would be there, but I thought it was going to kill me with speed. The Eldrazi decks I can handle. The control deck, I actually should have done better, but I realized that part of my problem is that I forgot to fix the mana before I walked out of the house. I had made some changes and it certainly affected my ability to draw mountains.

I may make a few minor changes. Maybe it is better to run Explosive Vegetation instead of Nissa's Pilgrimage because I get to choose the type of mana that comes into play. And once I hit the amount of mana that will let me play it, I'm going to be doing fine.

Ravaging Blaze is a better card than Draconic Roar. That dragonmaster has a huge target on its back once it hits the battlefield. I may keep the Draconic Roars on the side, though. Someone suggested I run Thunderbreak Regents but I don't know what I would replace if I did that, and it would require more mountains in the deck. Hell it would require that I run 24 or 25 lands instead, so I probably won't do that either.

Most people just had no idea what to do against the deck. They were following me around and quietly cheering for the homebrewed deck to win. I can't wait for the rotation so I can put in Structural Distortion!

papahiggs says... #1

World Breaker's ability only triggers on cast, so I don't suggest trying to bounce it with Eldrazi Displacer. I think Crumble to Dust really deserves a main board spot as it has huge upside potential. You can always side it out if the opponent is not running many non-basics. In my meta that would be very unusual. Apparently I live in Man-land central. I have been wanting to run an LD deck for a while, but I am always stymied by the win con. There is so much creature removal that I find it hard to rely on creature beats. I am looking forward to the new set. Perhaps it will have an answer for me.

papahiggs,

Yeah, I decided to stay away from World Breaker when I dropped white from the build.

I have been thinking about Crumble to Dust as a main board card, but it really is limited -- it only removes nonbasic lands so it just takes up space while I wait to see a nonbasic land come out. I usually take out Volcanic Upheaval because its instant speed doesn't mean that much to me. Not usually.

The new set has a cool card called Structural Distortion, a four-drop red card that exiles a land and deals two damage. I'm looking forward to replacing Volcanic Upheaval with that one. I also saw an enchantment, Harness the Storm a three-drop red card that lets you play an instant or sorcery from your graveyard, but it requires a lot of mana.

At this point, all I did was add more burn to my deck. I'll be looking to the new set for a different burn idea.

Thanks for checking out my deck.
