Demons and dragons and murder, oh my!

This is my flavor of Rakdos control. The game plan is to remove everything and win with beaters like Stormbreath Dragon and Desecration Demon or with the always useful, removal-dodging Mutavault or Pack Rat. I destroy the opponent's hand, creatures, and planeswalkers to make sure they can't answer my threats.

The Threats
  • Stormbreath Dragon - The main win-con. Finishes games like nobody's business due to its protection from white, which makes it relatively hard to remove, and its awesome monstrosity ability.
  • Desecration Demon - Just an enormous board presence. 6/6 flying for 4 in black? Sign me up!
  • Pack Rat - Love it or hate it, this little guy turns every topdeck into a win condition, and gets out of hand quickly.
  • Lifebane Zombie - Recently brought into the maindeck from the sideboard in order to help deal with decks like Jund Monsters and Junk Constellation.
  • Mutavault - Classic manland, only costs 1 mana to activate and lets me get in for attacks early on in the game and finish off the opponent later on.

The Removal

The Card Advantage
  • Underworld Connections - It's no Phyrexian Arena, but it's still an extremely powerful draw engine against midrange and control.
  • Thoughtseize - While technically not card advantage, this card usually trades itself and 2 life for the reason my opponent kept their opening hand, completely throwing off their game plan.
  • Whip of Erebos - Lets me get card advantage by bringing my beaters back from the grave, and also allows me to gain back some of the life that I lose through Thoughtseize and Underworld Connections.
  • Rakdos's Return - Extremely versatile spell that can shut down the opponent's hand, kill off enemy planeswalkers, or be used as a finishing burn spell. One of our best cards against Sphinx's Revelation decks.

Round 1: Budget Boros aggro, 2-0. Round 2: Naya Hexproof Auras, 2-1. Round 3: Selesnya Midrange, 2-0. Round 4: UW Control, 2-0.

My deck did quite well this week, and I think that my sideboard is to the point where it has gotten incredibly strong. I had things to board in and out every matchup, even the Naya hexproof, which a friend of mine recently brewed up. Pack Rat and Stormbreath Dragon were the stars of the show tonight, and Mutavault had its time to shine in round 4. I love the deck and I'll probably play it until it rotates.
