Drakes are fun

My first build for Amonkhet. Drake Haven looked super fun as soon as I saw it spoiled and was the card I was most excited to brew around. This is a slightly more aggressive build that other Drake Haven decks. Most of the other decks on this site are straight control decks with the Drake Haven win con.

One of my favorite is Grixis Cycling by Zaueski. Check it out for some great ideas.

As for my deck, it is more focused on drawing cards, discarding cards (obviously) and attacking with a swarm of fliers.

Here is a breakdown of the card choices.

Creatures

Hazoret the Fervent is starting to gain some traction as one of the better Gods. I loved it from the beginning. The design is great. The ability, as with all the Gods, helps to turn it on but it is combined with Shocking your opponent for 2, which is certainly relevant in this deck.

Reckless Scholar is still being playtested, but I loved the idea of a free discard outlet each turn once he is active. He is great when I get him out, but often I don't find myself wanting to tap out or spend the mana to cast him. Considering other options at the moment.

Curator of Mysteries is fantastic. A 4 mana 4/4 flier with scry?? That is just awesome. In my playtesting this card has won the game on it's own just by beating down. The scry is also fantastic with all the looting going on in this deck.

Insolent Neonate is a great way to start the game. It can normally get in for 2 hits before an opponent can block it (not very good on the draw, so consider boarding it out for more control). Once it is no longer an effective attacker I can sacrifice it and turn it into a 2/2 flier.

Non-Creature

Drake Haven is the namesake card and one of my favorite cards in the new set. I have long been a fan of Token strategies (especially Thopters) so this deck was right up my alley.

Censor is a pretty good counterspell that becomes much better given that when your opponent has a bunch of mana, you can just cycle it for something better. In this deck, countering your opponent's turn two play (especially when it is Heart of Kiran) is very critical given that turn 3 is almost always dedicated to tapping out for Drake Haven.

Catalog is like an instant speed Tormenting Voice for an additional mana. I liked this over tormenting voice due to it being instant speed. While I don't run a ton of counter magic, I like for my opponent to respect/play around me possibly having a counterspell. I also liked that the discard happens after drawing two and not as an additional cost.

Lightning Axe is solid removal for the Heart of Kirans of the world and can make a Drake for 2 mana.

Fiery Temper more removal that is great with Lightning Axe and is great in a deck that discards a bunch of cards.

Pull from Tomorrow is potentially a huge card draw spell, but more often than not it will be cast for 4 mana to draw 2. Not great given that you have to discard, but also not bad given that you can also create a Drake token off of the discard.

This deck is still very much a work in progress so please feel free to offer suggestions. One of the issues I have found with this deck in my playtesting is that it takes a while to get going so by the time a stabilize I am already at a pretty low life total. I am working on ways to control the early game to prevent this. Once this deck gets going it hits hard and is tough to stop.

Thanks and Happy Brewing!
