Just looking to play with my favorite tribe in a cheap-ish modern deck.

Mono-black is potentially a limitation, especially after the BW vampires introduced in Ixalan (such as Legion Lieutenant) but also allows us to play 2B (Gifted Aetherborn) or even 3B (Vampire Nocturnus) mana costs with ease. It also helps keep the cost of the deck (relatively) low.

Previous builds incorporated a madness subtheme, but I've mostly dropped that for now. Spells with madness are undeniably powerful, but in order to get reliable discard outlets, you have to downgrade the creatures somewhat, which makes the deck suffer.

Heavily inspired by SaffronOlive's Budget Magic concept

Updates Add

Some of my thoughts and updates to reflect changes I've made.

Ixalan was full of new vampires, but many of the interesting ones were sadly white or black/white. We did get one huge boost though, in the form of Dusk Legion Zealot. I figure if elves use Elvish Visionary at 4x, Zealot belongs at a 4 of as well.

Gifted Aetherborn is a really solid card in a lot of matchups. It can trade with Tarmogoyf thanks to deathtouch, and bring you back into the game against burn or other life-total pressuring decks, thanks to lifelink. All this stapled to a 2/3 body that can easily come out on turn two thanks to our mono-colored nature. Other lists have it at 2-3x, but I've bumped it up to 4x.

I've ended up cutting Kalastria Highborn and Indulgent Aristocrat. Their abilities are undeniably powerful, but in practice I have rarely if ever had the mana open to use them when it matters. I've swapped in 4x Vampire Cutthroat as a 1 drop, and 3x Stromkirk Condemned as a 2 drop. These also offer some flexibility, without requiring the mana.
