Batman18:
Well, I already got Snapcaster Mage.
You know, I thought about the Hermit. I like that he can be played from the graveyard, even after being milled or killed. I don't think I'd play Draining Whelk or Voracious Greatshark because of their mana cost. One of the reasons I took out Cryptic Command. Great card, but slow.
I do think adding another creature to the deck would do it some good however.

Malevolent Hermit Flip? Draining Whelk? Voracious Greatshark? Snapcaster Mage? Spectral Adversary? Torrential Gearhulk?

I think this would be fine at 5/4. Islandwalk can matter, but doesn't always. It has three coloured pips, and as a 99-card, it still wouldn't pass the vanilla test. As a commander, 5 power is a 5-turn clock, even though there are quite a few red pump spells. Then again, there are more efficient voltrons at CMC5.
Flavourwise, an ancient shark being 3/4 seems week, so 5/4, like Voracious Greatshark, feels better.

If you're not flush with Planeswalkers, big-bodied fliers, or persistent threats are good options to swap in. Dream Trawler , or Shark Typhoon or Voracious Greatshark , or any of those. Brazen Borrower would be super strong in here. Elspeth's Nightmare and Elspeth Conquers Death would be solid. Realm-Cloaked Giant , Extinction Event would be good in here. Zendikar spell-lands could add versatility, but make sure to preserve the Snow-core.

ChrisHansonBiomancin No, I just honestly don't include it in Protocol decks! It could probably work for a lot of the effects, but it's really nice to be able to decide when to blink creatures like Voracious Greatshark and one of my favorite moves is to block two creatures with one Barrin, Tolarian Archmage by actually blocking one and then blinking him to bounce the other creature before damage!
