Last breath is it good in the current standard?

I'm building a Dega Control deck and I am down to the final stages before testing. So before I go right into an FNM I was consulting with my friend and he says Ultimate Price would be better than Last Breath . Thoughts?

In theory? Sure, it has potential. In practice? ... Meh.

It does hit a number of threats, like Mutavault , Master of Waves , Courser of Kruphix and Nightveil Specter , but getting rid of any of these cards except Master will only slow down the decks running them, less than if you managed to remove a Master of the Feast , Polukranos, World Eater , or Desecration Demon .

Do you have a general decklist that you have put into the deckmaker? All the decks on your profile are private as of the time of writing

Orzhov Charm is better than both. Also, no, last breath isn't that good right now due to less Nightveil Specter s being played because mono-black now runs Bile Blight . That, and it was never really amazing anyway.

It's pretty decent in UWx control. Most Azorius lists play at least 2 between the main and board. They're very versatile as you can use them on enemy creatures, obviously, or your own Mutavault s to survive Burn. For black decks, especially Esper control, Ultimate Price is definitely attractive, but can be a meta call most of the time.

I'd personally go for Doom Blade , but that's just me.

heh heh, I said butt.

Since you're playing control, it should be fine. The 4 life is a huge drawback for an aggro deck, but no biggie for control / midrange. Its most useful applications are for dealing with Chandra's Phoenix and Voice of Resurgence , but there are enough impact creatures with 2 or less power that it's certainly playable.

For a Dega control build you don't have Supreme Verdict at the 4 drop, but you do have Anger of the Gods at 3 (which is a sideboard card at 2x), but otherwise you need to wait until 6-7 drop to get to Merciless Eviction , Elspeth, Sun's Champion 's -3, Extinguish All Hope , or Fated Retribution . That's a long, l-o-n-g way to go when you need the wrath to stabilize. That means you must run reliable spot removal between the 2 drop and 6 drop. I think Hero's Downfall is your most reliable option and if you run that at 4x, then you are probably ok with Last Breath over Ultimate Price . But honestly, if you're running Dega then I would go Mizzium Mortars in the 2 drop, Hero's Downfall and Banishing Light at the three drop, and Warleader's Helix at the 4 drop. That gives you the best removal both in terms of efficiency and colors from 2-4 that you'll need to stay alive long enough to stabilize and start dropping bombs.

P.S. Last Breath or Magma Spray out of the sideboard are good replacements for Mizzium Mortars post board if you are up against voice or other really annoying things that you need to exile and not just destroy. Might be worth running 1x mainboard.

Last Breath is AWESOME vs Monoblue as it hits 24/28 of their creatures (+4 if you count Mutavault ). Last time I checked, MUD was still a major player in the tournament meta game, so having a couple in the sideboard aren't bad. Ultimate Price sucks against them because you can't hit Mutavault , Nightveil Specter , Frostburn Weird , or Judge's Familiar .

It's a meta game call no doubt but if you see a lot of monoblue running around then it's not that bad of an option to have at least in the sideboard. Not to mention it helps deal with the aforementioned cards in the previous comments

Another good option with it is to spot remove a Xathrid Necromancer so that you can board wipe and not give your opponent a bunch of 2/2's

I liked it better when it stole your name because that's easier to read/pronounce Apoptosis.

Apoptosis: Why did you decide to name yourself after the death of cells (though it is normal and a controlled part of an organism's growth)? I looked it up ;) And it's still hard to pronounce.
