Wanderer art

A little early, but I figured there should be a new thread for the actual spoiler season. (It starts Janurary 27.)

For those who missed it, a new card was officially spoiled this Christmas: https://twitter.com/wizards_magic/status/1474425391418904594

I'm hyped. Not as much as I was for Ikoria / TFR, but certainly more than Hunt and Vow. I sat those two out almost entirely.

Not a fan of Innistrad. Just not into the gothic horror genre. Plagued by weekly nightmares as it is, lolol. Really am, actually. Sucks.

TypicalTimmy says... #3

I use to write in highschool and college. Then I began to have nightmares. I'd write them out to try and get a handle on it (something I learned in therapy) but it only served to reinforce them. They began to take upon a religious manner; Hell, Heaven, Demons, war, apocalypse, etc. So I transitioned into religious horror to try and use them as inspiration; to control the nightmares rather than the nightmares control me.

But, it didn't work. Over 10 years later, I am still plagued by them. Had several this month as it were of people dying, watching myself die, feeling the pain and everything.

It's terrifying to watch. So, I just can't get into horror anymore. It's just... It's too much. :/

Anyway, carry on with the thread. Users can message or post on my wall of they have questions.

I blame myself posting this early, derailing was high risk

Somewhat more on topic: I've looked for too long on the Wanderer's lips and now all I can see is the mouth emoji, with the appropriate facial features to accompany it.

A card for Satoru Umezawa was recently revealed; may I post a link to his card, here?

It was in the OP from the start : ' )

Hell, TappedOut has added it, even if it's still imageless: Satoru Umezawa

December 26, 2021 9:47 a.m.

Honestly, not really interested in the Cyberpunk theme of this set. Would have much preferred the feudal Japan setting, but those basic lands will carry the set and keep me interested.

December 26, 2021 5:55 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #9

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor: apparently, half the set will be non-sci-fi flavor, so you're not entirely out of luck

KBK7101 says... #10

I was really hesitant about the cyberpunk setting when they announced it, but judging by the spoilers we've gotten so far, it seems to balance the traditional and futuristic themes pretty well. The basic lands are also INSANE and I love them. (I do hope we see less full art basics over the next few sets. Keeping them spaced out makes them feel a little more special.)

Definitely more excited now than I was when it was announced. Can't wait for spoiler season to start!

Someone on another website speculated that the missing empress is the Wanderer, who appeared during War of the Spark, and that is actually a very good theory, so I shall be interested to see if it proves to be true.

New artwork

Yesterday, in a stream regarding the lore and the story articles, there were new artworks spoiled. You can find them in the above link.

Looking at what we have here, we can definitely say:

Nezumi on motorcycles are a thing. The kitsune look incredible. There re going to be orochi. And if WotC makes them nga, I'll be mad, sad and absolutely let down.

How likely is it that Tamiyo shall be in this set, considering that she is from Kamigawa?

Neon Dynasty MaRo Teaser

There we have the teaser. Looks very cool.

The turtle ninja will propably be the Kappa seen on theme boosters. Looking at the new look of the orochi, the types being tribally combined will very surely be snake and naga.

"a popular legendary creature from Champions of Kamigawa block returns in a new form"

Skimming the CoK legendary creatures, my money's on Myojin of Night's Reach. Known to have interacted with Nicol Bolas before, and currently unconfirmed alive or dead. Most of the other options are either mortal (and probably not 1,200+ years old), confirmed dead, less popular, or a Spirit Dragon.

January 24, 2022 1:59 p.m.

legendofa: Isn't there a new Hidetsugu already spoiled?

January 24, 2022 2:01 p.m.

legendofa says... #20

Sorry, forgot to add a point, Night's Reach is capable of interplanar travel.

seshiro_of_the_orochi https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/674279360149291008/a-popular-legendary-creature-from-champions-of#notes confirms this hint isn't talking about Hidetsugu.

January 24, 2022 2:03 p.m.

legendofa: Didn't see that. That's very fortunate.

January 24, 2022 2:20 p.m.

Not going into specifics since the card is still unconfirmed, but looks like we may be getting a spicy cameo this set.

legendofa says... #25

Coward_Token It's in post #12, which seshiro_of_the_orochi linked. Just under the Ninja token. I could be wrong about who it's showing, but it looks similar, allowing for artistic differences.

January 27, 2022 12:58 a.m.

Welp, didn't take long for them to reveal him. There he is...Jin-Gitaxais himself. What a cool (and oppressive) card. And Tamiyo has been compleated? I think that is our first instance of a compleated planewalker. I am kind of hyped for the story of this set now.

January 27, 2022 3:38 p.m.

I also like how these new Sagas transform into creatures both mechanically and flavorfully (living ancestors). And a new Shrine!

Some of the flavor text has me a little worried for the future of Kamigawa though. We already know Kaldheim has been tainted with phyrexian oil, looks like Kamigawa is next.

January 27, 2022 3:53 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #28

Creature Sagas: Neat, tho I wish the Dragon tribal one was red. Note that none of them are legendary.

Boseiju, Who Endures: not quite Swords to Plowshares since it lets you fetch e.g. dual lands or Mystic Sanctuary, but it's def worth running this. Using channel to solve the problem with legendary lands is quite neat, although it basically amounts to uncounterable MDFCs.

Reconfigure: Neat alternative spin on living weapon. That is one tiny monkey tho.

Akki Ember-Keeper: kinda feel like the Akki have become more boring. Also, flavorfully I guess non-Saga Enchantment Creatures here are Kami channelers?

The Reality Chip: Haha, it's an actual Jellyfish creature? Alright then. I still don't quite get the naming even after reading the story, but whatever. While it's still worth running, Yennet isn't happy that the mana cost is even.

Greater Tanuki: So today I learned that tanuki are both a mythical creature and an actual animal, and that while said animal is quite distant from actual raccoons.

Tameshi: meh, for W and a land bounced land you can cast stuff from your graveyard? probably some combo to be had here but I'm not super excited.

Tezzeret: Kinda funny that Tezz is mono-blue here while Kaito is the black-inclusive PW of the set. Anyway, that's each turn

Mirror Box: It's nice that it still gives bonuses to nonlegendary creatures. Note that while tokens don't get bonuses, nontokens can benefit from e.g. a kicked Rite of Replicaiton.

Tamiyo: WELL. Didn't see that coming. At least they're being conservative with Phyrexian Mana this time around. No casting outside of your deck's color, with the additional loyalty penalty.

Spirit Companion: That's not Mowu!

Abaques says... #29

I love cyberpunk. I mean I really love it. But I just do not want it in my Magic. I think there are some cool things that are doing both with card design and I like the slow trickle of Phyrexians in the story. But The cyberpunk aesthetic just doesn't work for me in Magic. I think I'm going to just skip this set entirely. This will be the first time that happens to me for a non-Masters set since I got back into Magic with Avacyn Restored.

January 27, 2022 4:33 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #30

Chishiro: I wish the spirits could have the Auras and Equipment attached to them on creation in a Living Weapon-esque way

Kotori: Turn one Consulate Dreadnought, turn three cast Kotori and crew the 'nought. Dermotaxi unfortunately just dies.

Also, Tezz, you just got free from Niccy B and you immediately got roped in by the Neo Phyrexians again? Jeez

January 27, 2022 4:33 p.m.

Just noticed that we got a third Goblin Welder iteration. I wish they would make one of them a legendary one day.

KBK7101 says... #32

I have to admit, I was very skeptical about this set when it was announced. The leaks I've seen and all this new info today have really got me excited for it, though. Probably the most excited for a set I've been since Kaldheim . It seems like a really nice blend of "classic" and cyberpunk Kamigawa. Gonna try and read the entire story tomorrow after work (I've seen the spoilers already, it's fine).

January 27, 2022 7:50 p.m.

Gleeock says... #33

Seems ok so far. Probably would be more interested if I played ... Seems like this set has quite the boner for that color - though that could just be the order of the leaks thus far. I am happy that this is not like Innistrad where it was so tribal intensive that I had zero interest, this is showing more cards that are good as part of 99 or can give some added oomph with a tribe as a secondary possibility but not a MUST (spirits seem to be benefitting a bit, which makes sense).

January 27, 2022 10:25 p.m.

Gleeock says... #34

Also, I am pumped about the creativity & wackadoodle things they are doing with some more stale color pairs in their commander products. has had little love & has gone pretty stale & is king stale... Vehicles & opponent auras/goad are creative directions for those color pairs. Having played a TON of forced combat decks though, they would need to add an assload of support to make opponent auras playable - it is already hard enough to win Voltron style, to win via combat... but then relying on building opponents with the current auras out there, that is a tough run. There needs to be more auras with a payoff to the card owner like; Shiny Impetus or Keen Sense to make this feasible.

January 27, 2022 10:34 p.m.

legendofa says... #35

Alas, no Mowu...

Kyodai, Soul of Kamigawa is the 5-color legend of the set. Not sure it's going to reach the heights of Golos or Kenrith, though.

I'm taking Invoke despair as a point in favor of a certain Myojin showing up one way or another.

Signposts seem to be pretty clear this set, with Enthusiastic Mechanaut, Jukai Naturalist , and Silver-Fur Master so far showing the way. Also, could Silver-Fur Master be the card that ties together two tribes?

January 28, 2022 3:22 a.m.

legendofa says... #36

Wait, Kyodai links to a month-old deck here?

January 28, 2022 3:24 a.m.

Kyodai has been leaked for a little while now, so it's possible that they were just getting ahead of the curve with that deck?

January 28, 2022 10:17 a.m.

legendofa says... #38

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor Really? That makes sense. I had just missed it somehow, then.

January 28, 2022 12:07 p.m.

SpammyV says... #39

Now that we have all five Kodamas, it's time for the mono-green Spirits deck randomly deciding which Kodama is in charge every game.

January 28, 2022 2:26 p.m.

legendofa says... #40

Seems to be a theme of Samurai and Warriors attacking alone. Modern Exalted might come up with something. Here's hoping there's a good payoff creature, possibly on the legendary side.

January 28, 2022 10:03 p.m.

Now that Junji is officially spoiled I can finally talk about him/her. Hot damn is that card awesome! It's going to fit in right at home in my Balthor the Defiled reanimator deck.

Also, Boseiju, Who Endures is already on the short list for strongest card (and will easily be the most expensive card) in the set. It seems extremely pushed.

January 29, 2022 12:22 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #42

Yeah I'm confused why Boseiju both has a base cost of 2 instead of 3 and can target nonbasics.

The "Invoke" cards are apparently supposed to be mono-colored Ultimatums, but I feel that the two shown so far aren't nearly as spectacular.

I kinda wish Assassin's (Tattoo?) Ink cost and could be reduced further by having a modified creature

I like Futurist Agent being a throwback to the conception of Ninjutsu as a disguise

oink oink

January 29, 2022 3:38 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #43

Lion Sash: Not bad to include as a mana sink finisher if your commander has incidental evasion, like Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle. Note that a lot of relevant cards like Hardened Scales only works while the Sash is unequipped.

January 29, 2022 5:23 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #44

Tempered in Solitude: oh my! not quite the cheaper red version of Phyrexian Arena it wants to be, since after board wipes you're going to be missing out on triggers, but this is quite good for cheaper red/boros commanders in decks with a low amount of creatures. Prosper, Tome-Bound is obviously happy

January 30, 2022 5:47 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #45

The increasing number of good colored Equipment like Lizard Blades gives me anixiety because they're antisynergetic with Swords of X&Y's protection

January 30, 2022 6:09 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #46

PSA that this set has one more legal commander than you think it has: Jellyfish Tribal (But unironically this time)

January 30, 2022 7:28 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #47

Satsuki, the Living Lore: Yeah yeah, saga tribal, but is it just me who finds death triggers on legendary creatures kinda jarring? And I wish the bounce option worked for all enchantments. (Also, no Thrull Parasite, Hex Parasite or Clockspinning for her.)

January 31, 2022 12:43 a.m.

vasarto77 says... #48

We have our final Kodama and he's pretty great!

January 31, 2022 1:47 a.m.

Lol, so (basically) Voltron is now a creature in the MTG Universe, awesome. This set is kind of all over the place thematically.

Pretty disappointing that Satsuki is only . Like, this is an amazing Saga tribal commander that can only play a small fraction of the Sagas...

January 31, 2022 9:07 a.m.

Like only 25% of Saga's can be played in Satsuki, and most of the best ones can't be included. Seems like a fail to me, even if I think the card itself is designed pretty well.
