Tempered in Solitude

Enchantment

Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, exile the top card of your library. You may play that card this turn.

Crow_Umbra on $25 Budget Isshin

Hey there, I saw your post on Reddit and figured I'd leave my suggestions here. I think for the most part, the majority of the deck is solid, but you can likely swap out Heiko Yamazaki, the General, Asari Captain, Peerless Samurai, Raiyuu, Storm's Edge, Selfless Samurai, and Tempered in Solitude, since all of those only care about solo attacking Warriors or Samurai, or solo creatures in the case of Tempered in Solitude. From having played Isshin a lot, the deck wants to swing out with more than one creature a lot of the time, and these cards all feel at odds with the rest of your deck.

Some potential swaps that can still fit your budget:

  • Scapegoat - Mana efficient and budget friendly board protection. I had this in for a while before Clever Concealment was printed.

  • Signal Pest - Very solid one drop for just about any Isshin list.

  • Accorder Paladin

  • Genasi Enforcers

  • Rakdos Signet - Your ramp is a little light, 1-2 more rocks can help.

  • Soul Partition - Pulls excellent double duty as a either a removal piece or can protect one of your permanents.

  • Elturel Survivors - Something I've wanted to find a slot for in my Isshin deck, but haven't been able to.

  • Scrappy Bruiser - A new piece of tech from MOM that's meant to synergize more with Backup, but can be a pseudo protective piece here.

Thanks Alhanalm, glad you like it!

Good question, Tempered in Solitude is a situational card as far I've proved it. If you are running out of cards, you'll probably be attacking with Hazoret, so this enchantment will help to get card advantage without altering your hand size. In the other hand, if you have a big hand and the game is more "controlly", you just can use it as discard fodder. It's not a key card in the deck I think, but can be used in awesome ways in the right situation.

Awesome list, you've got my upvote. Just out of curiosity, how often does Tempered in Solitude trigger?

Hi IslesWing

  • Season of Growth: Yes I find this card usually worth it. The main bonus is 2 mana vs usual 3 for enchantress effects even though it's not as good. plus it is an enchantment to trigger other enchantresses. The random scry effect is a nice bonus too.

Sythis is in the deck for sure! The best recent cards for the deck.

For mass draw, Hunter's Insight is most efficient, but Uril really benefits from drawing before combat. I would not play Hunter's Prowess as it is too costly and I don't really care about +3/+3 or trample. I played Rishkar's Expertise for a while since that allows you to mass draw then drop an aura before combat. I've also tried wheel of fortune but found it lacking in this deck, refilling my opponents hands was too risky. I have never played Reliquary Tower and don't recall ever thinking I would have won if I had it. Better to just get good mana fixing. I would play showdown over escape because it's an enchantment. For all these cards, I would most likely add Showdown of the Skalds

  • Tempered in Solitude - Haven't tried it, but my first thought is that the trigger is too late. Another aura that cantrips would probably be better.

hi! cool deck!

I'm a huge fan of Laelia - my own Laelia Deck is the one I've put the most time and energy into.

I wanted to thank you for running Uba Mask and Silent Arbiter, since I ended up adding them to my own decklist. really awesome card choices.

in terms of recommendations: Fiery Emancipation is a game winner, and pairs hilariously with Brash Taunter and any burn spells you happen to drop. Blasphemous Act, for example, does 13 damage to Brash Taunter, which becomes 39 damage via Fiery Emancipation, then Brash Taunter does 39 damage to target opponent, which becomes 117 damage, again, via Fiery Emancipation. it's a really funny way to nuke someone off the board.

aside from that, Smoke, War's Toll, and Price of Glory are all great hate spells; they can slow the game down and give you enough time to voltron for the win. Tempered in Solitude is a great, cheap exile engine, and Chaos Warp provides red some sorely needed spot removal.

if you wanna go for broke on mana ramp, Gauntlet of Power, Caged Sun, and Mana Flare are all good choices, and Crackle with Power gives you a win con to pour all that mana into.

hope this helps!

Edit: links.

Season of Growth re: Is it usually drawing you 3+ cards? Does it feel dead in games where you draw it after enchanting Uril/people manage to remove Uril once/twice?

Sythis, Harvest's Hand

Mass draw: Hunter's Insight and Hunter's Prowess Reliquary Tower

Kamigawa Best Selective cantrip:Commune with Spirits

~1 per turn Tempered in Solitude card from Kamigawa.

While I'm here I forgot to mention I also run Escape to the Wilds which is awesome for refilling hand, and not having to discard (+1 land drop), and am looking for a slot for Showdown of the Skalds

seshiro_of_the_orochi - thanks for the recs! I've got Tempered in Solitude here, but the other two would both be viable options for sure. put the order in yesterday, gonna start testing with my playgroup in the next few days. I'll consider both Uba Mask and Key to the City during editing!

I'd come across your Momo deck before. it's cool and fun and innovative for a mono-red deck--not another run of the mill Purphoros or Krenko build. thanks again for the comment and +1!

This looky very cool!

A card I really like in Momo: Twice the horns, twice the fun to get my voltron through is Key to the City. The discard cost is even easier with Laelia, and the additional draw is surprisingly useful, all the while guaranteed an unharmed attack.

More useful cards here would be Uba Mask and Tempered in Solitude.
