What is the most viable right now, R/G Tron or U/W Tron.

I'm looking to build a deck for modern and I want something at least semi competitive. I absolutely love the tron lands and I want a deck built around them. I was wondering which one was the best as of right now. If you have an answer please explain.

R/G features a "faster" control deck that tries to counteract aggro builds using Pyroclasm and taking lands away with Karn Liberated . R/G centers around Karn.

U/W is mostly a Gifts Ungiven deck with a playset of Celestial Colonnade as it's main win conditions. Follows a singleton-like deck so that Gifts hits most of the time, i.e. have Day of Judgment , Wrath of God , and Supreme Verdict as singletons so that any choice Gifts gives your opponent can get you a wrath.

It really depends on what you prefer doing. If you're focused on setting Tron up early to cast Karn Liberated , Mindslaver or Wurmcoil Engine by turn 3 or 4 then G/R is the route you want to take. If you want to try and disrupt your opponent then U/W is the route you want to take. I'm currently playing around with a 5c Tron idea. The more I play Tron the more I want Walking Atlas in my deck with some Lightning Greaves .

G/R Tron is the much better deck, in my opinion. It beats up on fair decks, like Jund and Zoo.

With U/W Tron, I feel like it'd be better just to play U/W/R Control. Cutting Lightning Bolt (and all of red) is kind of a bad deal when all you're getting in return is some fast mana and prison effects. It has fewer good matches than G/R Tron and lacks the disruption of U/W/R Control.

U/w tron is just bad, even if you resolve a Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite or something like that it's just underwhelming, I'd say go with r/g

There's also U tron which, personally, I like better than Gifts tron. U tron centers around stalling and drawing using countermagic and then resolving threats to stabilize.

I Fight For the Users! is my wife's U tron list.

I second that, Blue tron > Uw tron.

Uw is pretty much just a bad attempt at a ramp into Sphinx's Revelation deck that uses an equally unreliable draw engine in gifts. Granted, gifts can be good when you are able to pull 4 cards that you could use, but how often does that really happen? Mono U is much more stable.

Also note that U tron typically beats GR tron, at least in my experience running the deck.

I've found that U tron can be just as lethal as RG Tron. It's also much cheaper to build and if you enou playing counter magic AND playing huge threats, I'd suggest U tron.

Also it shoul be note that a T3 Sundering Titan is impossible to recover from.

It is my personal opinion that R/G Tron is the best version of Tron out there, as you have access to a much more consistent Tron setup, as well as the best cards to cast off of it. The other versions try to play a more controlling role, however I feel that cutting mroe controlling cards for a combo or ways to search up lands is not the best use of space, and thus they are worse. Mono U Tron especially takes a lot of time to set up and gets destroyed by aggro and combo decks, which R/G has an OK chance against.

@Ohthenoises It's also impossible.

T1 Urza's Tower
T2 Urza's Mine > Talisman of Dominance
T3 Urza's Power Plant > Sundering Titan

I'm sorry, what were you wrong about? :p

I know because my wife actually had this happen in a PTQ qualifier.

Also, you'd be surprised about the aggro matchup that U tron has. It's actually pretty solid. Then again a distinction should be made between hyper-aggro like Affinity and aggro like KoR Zoo.

@Ohthenoises My bad. I forgot about Talisman of Dominance , thought you were discussing R/G Tron. That sounds broken as hell.

Nah man I'm talking about the trim that uses Through the Breach

July 15, 2014 11:02 a.m.

@VampireArmy It also uses Gifts Ungiven as a 3-of.

DrFunk27 says... #21

VampireArmy that's gifts tron. It uses through the breach in most builds. Also I've seen Fury of the Horde

I thought Gifts tron was the one Reid Duke was using. That was U/W

July 15, 2014 12:15 p.m.

sylvannos says... #23

@DrFunk27 and VampireArmy: Check the link I posted. It uses both Through the Breach and Gifts Ungiven . You want to grab Snapcaster Mage , Through the Breach , and an Eldrazi with Gifts Ungiven at the end of your opponent's turn three, then untap and smack them.

July 15, 2014 4:41 p.m.

@sylvannos Don't they just bin the Snapcaster Mage and the Eldrazi? What happens then?

July 15, 2014 7:03 p.m.

sylvannos says... #25

@thispersonisagenius: You can reliably get Tron up on turn three, so the fourth card can be Kozilek, Butcher of Truth or Wurmcoil Engine . If they dump an eldrazi, you shuffle your graveyard back in. If they dump Through the Breach , you just cast an Eldrazi/Wurmcoil Engine . If they dump both targets for Through the Breach , you can Snapcaster Mage Gifts Ungiven and search up four targets.

July 16, 2014 12:29 a.m.

@sylvannos I see. It's not supposed to be like Rites + fatty where you get it no matter what. Shuffling your yard back in and putting Through the Breach to hand (since that's what's probably going to always happen) seems less powerful though.

July 16, 2014 10:21 a.m.

sylvannos says... #27

@thispersonisagenius: Yah, definitely less powerful than Unburial Rites . I like to think of U/R Tron as more of a consistent deck than Goryo's Vengeance , rather than an actual Tron deck. It basically cuts Goryo's Vengeance for a Tron package so that it doesn't get blown out by graveyard hate and can actually just hardcast stuff. Granted, there's no Griselbrand , so the Gifts Ungiven s are more clutch.
