Underwhelming

Commander (EDH) forum

So I've been playing Commander for a bit over a year now. And I am loving the format. It lets me use things i can't use anywhere else. And I've noticed that there are a few cards that are just bad or mediocre cards. Even in Commander. Except when you combine them with that one General who can turn them into amazing cards.

What underwhelming or mediocre cards have you guys found to be absolute BOMBS in your particular Commander deck?

I'll give you one of mine. Traumatic Visions has been an absolute BEAST in my Dralnu's Dark Dream commander deck. Although it is kinda neat to search up a basic in Blue. It is absolutely amazing to be able to search up a basic and counter a spell. This thing has Done so much work for me I wouldn't think of removing it from my list.

I have 7 so I'll list them and what common/uncommon does tons of work.

Aura Mind Trick, Corrupted Conscience steals threats or gives my general infect.

Team Blade, Mana Web . (For use with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth .)

EDH? Why Not Slivers?, Nameless Inversion and Crib Swap provide TUTORABLE removal.

Rollover Minutes, Nim Deathmantle is amazing for keeping that mana around.

Krenko's Commandos, Fireball will kill a table if/when I go infinite.

What Fwoosh?, card:General's Regalia has proven to be amazing especially when targeting Stuffy Doll .

Ghave, Guru of Binary, card:Nature's Claim is amazing as a 1 drop relic breaker.

I was talking about cards that are just kinda.. Jank. Not really that great but pretty sick when used in commander. Fireball is a card that is universally seen as a powerful card. So it wouldn't count. Mana Web is a Huge threat and I would destroy that thing or counter it. It says "I'm a threat!". Nim Deathmantle is featured in multiple infinite mana and death combos so that doesn't qualify as a Underwhelming card either.. card:Nature's Claim and your Changeling Spells are pretty cool though. Being able to tutor for them is kinda awesome. I really like that. And I can see where people might not think card:General's Regalia wouldn't be too threatening. But then again, if I'm going to deal damage to someone I don't want it redirected.

Burning Inquiry as a combo piece in my Niv-Mizzet is amazing. with Consecrated Sphinx and Thought Reflection out, Burning Inquiry draws you >50 cards in a 5 player game.

Well when I mentioned the other stuff I just picked the least threatening thing off of each list :P

Not a lot of players have ever SEEN Mana Web so they mostly just glaze over it, till you play Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and lol.

There are a ton of cards out there that are better than Fireball (Comet Storm or Banefire for instance) but everyone seems to forget that I can add targets so lots of players will ignore it until it's cast for infinite.

Admittedly Nim Deathmantle is parts of some combos so I'll change the submission of that deck from Nim Deathmantle to Primal Surge . That card is jank but if built around is amazing.

Awesome. Another one that does a lot for me is Savor the Moment on my Jhoira, Suspend Reality deck. People have called it the blue Explore . But when it gives you an extra upkeep, this thing has pulled its weight in more then 1 deck of mine.

If people in your play group aren't reading what the cards do that is their problem. Mana Web is a card with an effect that is extremely dangerous. Especially for blue players. Forcing a blue player to tap down all her lands is pretty nasty. And something she doesn't want to do.

I'll give you Fireball .. But I'm still a bit iffy on that one. Especially seeings as Infinite combo makes all X spells stupid and I have a distaste for infinite anything.

You do realize that you have to either cycle or counter, right? You can't do both.

So, everyone is all about the card:Sensei's Divining Top in EDH, but for a Mayael deck, I think the top is less useful than Crystal Ball . The top can only shuffle the top cards of your deck around, the ball can send them to the bottom, meaning you can really look through the top 7 cards of your library for Mayael's ability.

Phyrexian Reclamation . For a 49 cent card it is amazing in EDH, In my Teysa deck, having this and Slum Reaper and Blood Artist /Falkenrath Noble means I can start making everyone lose creatures for basically just the mana cost. And with Teysa out, each time I play it and sac it gives me another Spirit token to fuel her exile ability.

Trace of Abundance . It's more mana, it's color-fixing, it's land shielding, and it only costs two mana. Always liked this card.

Dimir Infiltrator in my Damia deck is pretty great. I run a lot of Ninjas, so a cheap unblockable creature is great for that, and his Transmute ability hits so many great things like Lightning Greaves , Cyclonic Rift , and Exsanguinate .

I love the Trace of Abundance use. Getting extra mana is okay. But shrouding a important, expensive land is just awesome. I would have never thought of using that.
