Commander (EDH) forum

Hey players,

I’ve been playing edh for about a year or so (been playing other formats since Amonkhet, so about 3-4 years now).

My playgroup and I have been in rut for about 4 months, playing the same deck or different decks but with the same strategy and it’s feeling really long and boring. I wanna build something new, something bold and flashy. We’re around 16 to 20 people and here’s what we’re currently playing

Zombies, Dragons, Vampires, Tokens, Cats, Artifacts, Aristocrate, Reanimation, Groupe hug, Slivers, Elves, Enchantress, And for some reasons we all have a Derevi stax deck (we all had it before we met).

I wanna build something out of those theme/tribes. Something not to casual but far from cEDH (something in between).

If it helps my favourite sets were Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation. I love everything themed around ancient egypt (yes one of my favourite game is assassin’s creed origin and my favourite movie is the mummy with Brendan Fraser).

My problem with those two set is that other than Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons (which I don’t like much because if Hapatra gets Imprisoned in the Moon or Darksteel Mutation or if she gets blown up to many times well the deck is worthless) I don’t see anything worth it for edh so if the deck doesn’t come from those sets it’s fine.

My playstyle is pretty much aggro, either an army of small creatures with haste or big dumb creatures.

It’s a long shot but if anyone has ideas for a commander please let me know (do not list me a deck just a commander is fine I like to build my own stuff personally).

See ya.

Jeez, I feel like I always say this, but Xenagos, God of Revels is super fun and pretty powerful, though nowhere near cEDH. My prefered playstyle is to quickly ramp into a single creature and make it a must answer threat. That way you are not over extended into board wipes and you can maximize doubling a single creature's power.

Gidgetimer my problem with most of the gods is that if you don’t have the right devotions or requirements they aren’t allowed to be ‘’real’’ creatures.

It might be a stupid reason for some but I like when I need to go for a K.O to not worry that the only creatures I have access to is a god that might not be allowed to attack because their requirements were not met.

Same for blocking. Sometimes all you needed what that one blocker to survive but oups you died because your Xenagos was an enchantment.

This wouldn't exactly follow the Egyptian theme, but Kenrith, the Returned King could be your commander and you could try spirits or soldiers as the theme. This would give you better options for variety as opposed to most single/double color commanders.

Nekusar, the Mindrazer wheel deck

Brallin, Skyshark Rider  Flip + Shabraz, the Skyshark wheel or discard/draw version

Feather, the Reedemed go a pinger/slinger version instead of voltron equipment strategy

Niv-Mizzet, Parun is really a combo deck

Mizzix of the Izmagnus buyback, NO deck or storm deck options

TheHandsomeTeacher: I see Xenagod not being a creature as an upside. It dodges creature exile and bounce. Different stroke for different folks, I guess. I just treat the commander as an indestructible enchantment that allows me to swing Atarka Worldrender for 24 or make a 48/48 Heroes' Bane after 2 turns because of pumping after the start of combat buff. Good luck finding something that is more your speed. I might hit the thread up again tomorrow when I'm not so tired.

hejtmane I’m not sure where I’m supposed to see the aggro part here.

I didn't see landfall... that's always fun! Omnath or Omnath... or maybe Tatyova, Benthic Druid, or Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait

Sorry i misread it i thought he wanted something besides aggro

Did I hear Landfall? How about Moraug, Fury of Akoum? It's unusual, it's agressive and it has one-shot potential. For reference: Momo, Faster than Time

Sounds like we have similar play styles.

Some of my favorite commanders are:

Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire. My 99 is all permanents. Lots of haste enablers. Lots of mana dorks. Win through combat with jundy stompy stuff. Your commander is a threat, removal, and a value engine all in one.

Skullbriar, the Walking Grave +1 counter voltron

Negan, The Cold-Blooded control the board and simultaneously gain value for it. Wins through combat or a big X spell or Revel in Riches

Ephara, God of the Polis slam 50+ of the best creatures and token generators into one deck, win through beat down, always have a full hand.

I usually chime in with an urge for people to make more random/themely decks that aren’t focused too intently on winning. Take a look through my lists to see what sort of stuff I’m talking about. While my decks generally have less synergy, they end up having situational synergy with the random decks I play against (I expect Cold Snap is about to become “good” again). It sort of brings you back to what commander began as. The big challenge will be getting all of the decks at the table to be at similar power levels. I generally don’t worry about that, and focus on having fun with the people I’m sitting with (as they steamroller each other with more effective decks). Not everyone is going to enjoy this method, and that’s very understandable, but I feel like I was where you’re at now and this theme/social focus is what brought me back.

Could just pick a random theme and put najeela at the helm. Najeela birds could still have a derevi combo finish available. Najeela artifacts doesnt make much sense, but is still just jamming a powerhouse on a good strategy. Flower themed Najeela, the Blade-Blossom would even be able to take wins from her power.

Nothing breaks a rut like: Thantis, the Warweaver or Marisi, breaker of coils. Though not really Egyptian themed. Marisi works well with several Oketra-related token production themes & vigilant warriors (while not being expressly swing-wide. I've successfully gone that route & it is very good at both pushing boardwipes & recovering from them super fast. You get to play weird protection themes that render the darksteel mutations of the world useless ie Earnest Fellowship. You get to change the game-pace, & change up how defense works.

Also, both commanders work very well with "Monarch" mechanics, which can really change how games work.

Something I built really fun recently was flicker/trigger honestly it's a very satisfying deck to play XD I can make a 100 squirrel tokens or so if I play it right haha and i would be able to make about that many each turn as well and if played right a little more during my opponent's turns too just very fun to play and that's not the only thing it does it's one of my favorite things though that nobody expects me to do though
