Creature-Type Hate Deck

Commander Deck Help forum

I'm looking to create a deck that does three things efficiently:

  1. Be able to single out particular creature-type and Debilitate/Remove/Use them
  2. Make it very excruciating for opponents to have creatures, especially of certain types
  3. Apply creature-types for shenanigans.

Budget isn't an issue as I plan on acquiring the pieces overtime, although I wouldn't mind not spending more than I really have to.

My playgroup has a lot of creature theme going on that work very well. I'm aiming to wreck their fun. I'm currently leaning on Olivia Voldaren to build upon but am open to suggestions.

Other cards that helped inspire the concept:

If you want to punish opponents for having creatures and wreck their fun, Stax is really the way to go. While the mutual nature means you're limited in the creatures you can run, it's still a powerful control archetype.

Here's a couple other options:

  • Plague Sliver is a pretty nifty card if you have anyone who runs Slivers, but that's pretty specific.

  • Caller of the Hunt could be a pretty fun card against decks that go really wide.

  • With Olivia, you could capture an opponents creature and sacrifice it to Endemic Plague, but you'll want some way to make your own commander indestructible, lest you kill her as well.

Really like Endemic Plague. With Olivia Voldaren I can put on Darksteel Plate and start sacing stuff. My only concern is that my opponents will most likely have a way of making all of their creatures indestructible.

I know of Bonds of Mortality, but it isn't in her colors. I could splash but then I'd have to look for another commander.

Right now, my options are:

  • Splash and find another commander
  • find cards that bypass indestructibility in and

Any suggestions other viable commanders or cards?

Also, big thanks for Plague Sliver. This will come in handy very much.

I will look at Commander options and get back to you on that. In the meanwhile, there are a few ways to bypass indestructible:

  1. Use cards like Dismember. Unlike cards that deal direct damage, giving a creature -X/-X will still send an indestructible creature to the graveyard.

  2. Force your opponents to sacrifice their creatures. This is where traditional Stax cards and cards like Pox excel. Since they generally have a mutual effect which also harms you, they tend to be inexpensive to cast. Cards like Diabolic Edict also work. These cards, however, have the disadvantage of allowing you opponent to chose what gets killed, limiting their utility if you are not highly invested in Stax. Torment of Hailfire, particularly if you have ramp, is a strong non-mutual sacrifice card, that allows you to limit opponent choices by setting a large X value.

  3. Remove whatever is giving the creatures indestructible. In Red and Black, you can use any of the above to remove creatures (Such as Avacyn, Angel of Hope), or the many Red artifact destruction spells if that is the source. Enchantments are going to give you a hard time, unless you run Green or White.

  4. Prevent the threat from ever actualising in the first place. You can either attack their hand (Thoughtseize, etc.) or counter the spell, though Black is pretty limited in this field (Withering Boon, and a couple others).

  5. Exile the creatures. This is really in the preview of White, so is not helpful to you.

  6. Bounce their creatures. This is more of a Blue tactic, so again is not helpful.

So far I'm thinking I'll end up running this build in .

I also love the idea of attacking their hand, forcing them to discard or stealing from their hand.

I recently experimented with this idea in a mono black setting, but went with more of a discard "screw-you-over" theme than anything. The decklist here is kinda janky, but maybe you can draw from it a bit. Mono Black Control Edh

Also, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur Is a great card to ruin their fun if you're willing to run blue
