TheLameSauce's Lame Challenge #1
Challenges and Articles forum
Posted on May 30, 2013, 7:30 p.m. by TheLameSauce
My first and favorite set I ever played was Shadowmoor. So many good cards came out of that block, as well as Lorwyn, and I always think fondly of all the cards I used to play with back then.
My challenge for you is this: build a 60 card deck consisting of no fewer than 20 cards from Shadowmoor and/or Eventide, as well as at least 5 cards from Lorwyn block. The rest of the non-land cards in your deck can be from any other set as long as they are modern legal and they rank below a 3.75 on Gatherer (because some cards are just too good).
For reference:
Shadowmoor Block
Lorwyn Block
Modern < 3.75
Decks will be pitted against one another to find the best of the bunch, but I will also pick out the deck that I think is the most creative and unique. The creator of the deck that goes undefeated will determine the block for the next challenge, and the owner of the most creative deck will determine the theme. Once the winners are chosen, I'll upvote and critique up to 4 decks of each of their choice.
The tentative deadline is a week from this Friday, June 7th, however if there are fewer than 8 entries I'll extend the deadline until the following Monday and allow participants to submit a second deck.
Good luck! Happy deckbuilding!

Thanks for the submussion PenitentKnight! It looks like I may have been misleading with my wording though: I meant you can use cards outside of Shadowmoor block as long as they weren't lands. Sorry if this messes anything up!

Can the cards from lorwyn/shadowmoor be higher rated than 3.75?

Turn to Mist and Vanish into Memory are still available if your goal is flicker. I can bump it up to 4.0 though, that seems fair.

The main reason for the rating restriction is I didn't want anyone running 4 of JTMS just to break everything and I heard he was rated very low considering his power. So long as he stays at 4.1 though, I think <4 is a good point to stick at.

And then I actually looked and saw that he's modern banned... Wow, kinda feel dumb now haha.

My submission, actually completely Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block, hahaha

Okay, after some time i've got it, Godhead's Destruction

Still a few days remain, anyone else interested in participating?

3 submissions is far less than I was hoping for... I'm going to go ahead and open this up for two decks per person, and I'll close the entries either Monday or once I have 8 decks, whichever comes first.

So, for clarification, is the rating >3.5 or >4.0?

Also, I'll begin playing these decks against eachother tomorrow morning. Any submissions that manage to sneak in before I begin are in the running, so don't think it's too late quite yet!

Why didn't I see this last night when I was bored, instead of today when I'm hung up at work...

Alright! Time to see how these decks of Shadowmoor fare aaginst eachother! First up PenitentKnight's Cinder Burns VS mstancea's A Painting Is Worth A Thousand Words.
Game 1: Cinder's red and black elementals get a quick start with a couple Brighthearth Banneret
s into an Ashling, the Extinguisher
, two Hostility
s and two Ashenmoor Liege
by turn 7, however things were already looking bleak against a turn two Valeron Outlander
from Painting, quickly followed by a Beseech the Queen
for a Painter's Servant
turning Cinders red hope into black dispair. A turn 7 Beseech the Queen
into Teysa, Orzhov Scion
, Painter's evil, evil finisher, closed this one out quickly, exiling his field and sweeping in with B/W spirits.
Game 2: Cinder once again hits the ground running with Ashling the Pilgrim
, Ashenmoor Liege
, and Balefire Liege
one after the other, however Painting's opening hand of Painter's Servant
, Teysa, Orzhov Scion
, and Beseech the Queen
means Cinder needs to put things in gear to stand a chance. Turn 5 Painting has Painter's Servant
(black) , Teysa, Orzhov Scion
, and 2 other creatures out, and casts Beseech the Queen
for another Painter's Servant
setting up to cast it declairing white next turn and setting up his win-con. Cinder top decks an Everlasting Torment
which does an excellent job of negating Painting's protection effects, but even with a well placed Double Cleave
Painting survives at 3 life managing to get all the pieces together once again next turn.

Next up is cartwheelnurd's Lame Kithkin against KingSorin's Godhead's Destruction.
Before I get to the match though, I understand this kithkin deck does not conform to the rules set out in this challenge, so it can't knock a deck out of the running, and if it gets the best record, I will also award the runner up with the same prize as first place.
Game 1: Godhead keeps what appears to be a decent openning hand with 2 Electrickery
s and a Zealous Guardian
, topdecking into a Tundra Wolves
. However, the next 6 turns it drew nothing but land as Kithkin dropped Mosquito Guard
(drawing out the first Electrickery
), Preeminent Captain
, Kinsbaile Borderguard
, another Preeminent Captain
, Figure of Destiny
championed by Thoughtweft Trio
, and finally a Wizened Cenn
, all by turn 7. Kithkin wins.
Game 2: Once again Kithkin overwhelms Godhead, who struggled to find a ballance between mana and relevant plays.

Final match of round one! GoldGhost012's The True Evil of Shadowmoor against KingSorin's HELLVAULLLLT!!!!!!
Game 1: Evil had an awkward start managing to get 2 Scuttlemutt
s Scrapbasket
and Cauldron of Souls
out , while Hellvault dropped a Guttersnipe
and a Shrewd Hatchling
. A well timed Act of Aggression
takes all the steam out of Evil, followed by a Cryptic Command
( a verrry powerful Lorwyn card that I'm surprised didn't make it into more of these decks) which countered Evil's Lurebound Scarecrow
and tapped all his creatures. Evil responded by tapping his Scuttlemutt
s for enough mana to drop Wingrattle Scarecrow
, but with one creature untapped at 6 life, staring down a Shrewd Hatchling
it's game over. Hellvault plays Nucklavee
bringing the hatchling to 6/6 with a mana open for it's ability, as well as returning Cryptic Command
to his hand, adding salt to Evil's wounds. Hellvault wins.
Game 2: Evil does quite a bit better this time around, getting Prismatic Omen
, Heartmender
, Cauldron of Souls
and Reaper King
pretty much one after the other, as well as a couple Solar Tide
s. However, with 3 Dominus of Fealty
s in hand among all the other theft and manipulation effects, even wiping the board twice wasn't enough for Evil. Helvault takes a much closer game, but takes it all the same.
HELLVAULLLLT!!!!!!(2) The True Evil of Shadowmoor(0)
I'll have to wait a bit to get to round two, but I should have it up sometime this evening.

I'm glad I won, despite being too lazy to make my deck legal after messing up the morningtide and eventide symbols.

Round 2 begins! First up, mstancea's A Painting Is Worth A Thousand Words VS cartwheelnurds Lame Kithkin!
Game 1: Kithkin once again proves to be much too fast, dropping Mosquito Guard
, 2xWizened Cenn
, a final Mosquito Guard
and an Oblivion Ring
one after the other, dealing 6 damage turn 4, 5, and 6 despite Painting's pro-white Stillmoon Cavalier
. Kithkin wins without taking a single point of damage.
Game 2: Painter's just can't keep all it's pieces on the board, Kithkin forces it to block with Teysa, Orzhov Scion
and a Riftmarked Knight
, still taking nearly lethal damage, before it can drop the Painter's Servant
tutored by Liliana Vess
.

Umm I don't mean to be impatient, but Monday was yesterday and I like knowing the results of challenges. I'm just giving you a heads up in case you've forgotten about the challenge TheLameSauce
