This is my current mono-blue merfolk deck. So far I am having trouble against my friend's deck featuring Favored Hoplite, Kiln Fiend and Monastery Swiftspear which are then pumped up with Mutagenic Growth, Rancor, Temur Battle Rage etc. My main problems are:

  1. I don't want to block with my dudes, because I need them to kill in the end. And they are too small to block + kill my opponent's. That is the reason why I have Apostle's Blessing to protect my guys for blocking.

  2. The deck is too slow and has not enough control. Even with Aether Vial out and putting some dudes on the field, I often just get 20 damage on turn 3, even with blocking.

  3. Vapor Snagging his dudes often doesn't work because he uses Apostle's Blessing. Though I play the Surgical Extraction to get rid of pump spells etc as soon as they have been played.

I was thinking about putting in the Merrow Reejerey again to make it faster. Also the Tidebinder Mage seems to be a good guy. Spellskite would be killer I guess since it redirects all the pump to him. Expensive card though.

It is a very particular deck I am playing against but in general, decks which get big creatures real fast seem to be a big problem. I'd be happy to hear suggestions for improvement (I wanna keep it modern though) :)
