Are you tired of highly creature-focused metas?

Well hold onto something, because the infamous Mono-B Pox is now joining the MTGA Historic format.

Why should I play Mono-B Pox?

  • You like winning against Trickery on turn one.

  • You enjoy meta-disruptive decks with a niche focus that will have polarized matchups.

  • You are nostalgic to play decks from an old format in another entirely separate format.

  • You don't mind winning the game on turn 15 with chip damage from Duskwielder .

Why should I not play Mono-B Pox?

  • You want to win against burn sometimes.

  • You want your deck to be named after cards that are legal in the format you're playing.

  • You're specifically chasing frequent top-8 tournament results.

Pox is a competitive deck that deals with severely polarized matchups, and this is especially exaggerated in historic. Expect to win against most combo decks, put up an even fight against aggro or control, struggle against strong midrange decks, and consistently lose to burn.

Duress x4 self-explanatory, eight instances of hand disruption is a must in this deck.

Thoughtseize x4 again self-explanatory, this is our best T1 play.

Fatal Push x4 solid removal, best T1-T3 but still playable in the late game.

Duskwielder x4 lifegain facilitates payoffs in the deck, life loss applies pressure.

Liliana's Triumph x4 removal, solid payoff with Liliana in play.

Heartless Act x4 decent removal, discard fodder if not needed.

Tinybones, Trinket Thief x2 potential draw engine and late-game payoff on the same card.

Midnight Reaper x4 maximizing card advantage against our handless opponent.

Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose x2 payoff for each lifegain trigger in the deck.

Liliana, Waker of the Dead x4 this deck's win-con, empty hands and activate her ultimate.

Eradicator Valkyrie x2 lifegain and evasion on a strong body, solid finisher. Sac-outlet.

Tergrid, God of Fright   x2 I mostly use the artifact half of this card for maximum pressure.

Snow-Covered Swamp x20 snow-covered lands for Blood on the Snow in the sideboard.

Note: if you find yourself needing Fatal Push with it's Revolt mode more frequently, consider swapping 2x Snow-Covered Swamp for 2x Fabled Passage . I usually push without revolt.

Tormod's Crypt x2 grave-hate.

Soul Shatter x2 nabs any pesky walkers, gods or other indestructible creatures.

Yahenni, Undying Partisan x2 optional aggro in case we need to speed up our game.

Extinction Event x1 anti-aggro sneaky tech. Choose odd or even carefully.

Blood on the Snow x1 board wipe if needed + reanimation.

Massacre Wurm x1 stops midrange decks that attempt to go wide.

Eradicator Valkyrie x2 redundancy, useful against midrange.

Bloodchief's Thirst x2 redundancy.

Plaguecrafter x2 redundancy.

Our mainboard is geared towards versatility. For this reason the logical next step moving into games 2 and/or 3 is to specialize and increase redundancy as desired depending on the matchup.

The deck takes some getting used to, but I've had a good win ratio playing this in historic on MTGA ever since I built it a few weeks ago. It's inspired by an old legacy deck of mine that I still love.
