Sand Squid

Creature — Squid Beast

Islandwalk

You may choose not to untap Sand Squid during your untap step.

Tap: Tap target creature. That creature doesn't untap during its controller's untap step as long as Sand Squid remains tapped.

I forgot to count Sad Robot. You have nine ramp pieces.

It seems innocuous, but Sand Squid always puts in more work than it seems. I'd run it over Harbor Serpent for flavor. Hell, I'd run almost anything over Harbor Serpent. Spined Megalodon and Tolarian Kraken are fun new sea monsters. Most Serpents are commons and have the appropriate power associated with that. Nothing wrong with that from a design perspective but in EDH you are gonna be better off with more impactful cards.

I prefer Conjurer's Closet over Cold Storage for permanently keeping stolen creatures. Thassa, Deep-Dwelling is fantastic too and on-theme.

I've made two sea-creature tribals. Check them out for inspiration! Coral Capers -- (Budget Seamonsters) and Tidal Trouble. The Maybeboards are full of almost every playable fish and sea monster.

Similar to Giant Oyster and Sand Squid, a card I really want for Modern (maybe in MH2?):

Servent of Unesh

Creature - Bird Wizard

Flying

, , Exert Servent of Unesh: Tap target creature. That creature doesn't untap during its controller's untap step for as long as Servant of Unesh remains tapped.

Tapping down a creature with a cheap flyer for every two turns seems versatile and good enough to see standard play, at the very least.

I think it'd likely see Pioneer play, but maybe not Modern, but I like how MH1 included color-shifted mechanics, and thus would place it there.

I'd like to see a legendary card which would be cool in standard/pioneer/modern,

but not in commander, like Tetzimoc, Primal Death or Dragonlord Kolaghan. Commanders like Child of Alara and Elenda, the Dusk Rose aren't what I mean. The fact that you can't directly send a card to the command zone and get its valuable death trigger is not what I mean. I mean cards that fundamentally are difficult to work with the rules of how commander works.

Personally, my Elenda deck just exiles her from the graveyard to the command zone for value or reanimates her. It's not difficult to handle the dies vs. command zone thing.

I dunno, that Loyal Drake doesn't look much like a starfish or crab...

It may seem innocuous but Sand Squid has always overperformed in my seamonster decks. Coral Capers -- (Budget Seamonsters) was the original with Thassa (which you've seen) but I morphed the deck into Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle (Tidal Trouble).

I had AEtherplasm in my mono-blue deck and it was quite good. Looks a bit like a jellyfish so that's a plus.

I always ran into issues where I would finally have enough ramp or Quicksilver Amulet out to do stuff but because I was open all through the early game I wouldn't have the life to realize my kraken dreams. Fog Bank , Guard Gomazoa , Gomazoa , Spiny Starfish , Wall of Kelp , and Wall of Frost are all good and on-theme, as well as helpful for Thassa's devotion.

Looks good, I just find that it feels very susceptible to early aggro, especially once you invest your mana in a big creature only to get it blown up by removal. I feel like you can include some thematic sea creatures like Chasm Skulker, Reef Worm, Sealock Monster, Sand Squid etc.

Great humour, man! I read the name in the voice of Jar Jar Binks; make of that what you will.

Giant Oyster is cool. It kind of reminds me of Sand Squid .
