Sorry for not saying anything for a long while, Dead_Blue_ and Squee_Spirit_Guide. Life has been a bit complicated. I'll answer both of you in order.

Squee_Spirit_Guide, trying to build things in colors different from the usual has been something I consider when planning a new deck. I remember seeing in someone's profile a Jeskai Zombies deck and I still have that ideia on my mind.

About your suggestions, Soul Reap is interesting, maybe I can find a spot for it in the sideboard. Leechridden Swamp and Syphon Life seem a bit too slow for the deck, especially the Syphon Life as it's for just 2 damage.

Dead_Blue_, thanks for the suggestions, but none of them seem useful for the deck. If look at other comments here, you'll see Fruit of Tizerus is a debatable inclusion, so I feel Vicious Rumors isn't worth. The other two however... Aren't very budget, and the idea of this list is exactly to be a budget fun deck.

wallisface, in regards to your thoughts:

  • Yes, Fruit of Tizerus isn't great, just as Shock isn't for . However, doesn't have many equivalents to Lightning Bolt.

  • Following on the topic of a Bolt equivalent, I considered Chancellor of the Dross, but it's a problematic card. It's really only useful on the first turn, becoming even worse on later turns, since its only utility would be Smallpox fodder.

  • Again I have to agree with your assessment, but just with Sword-Point Diplomacy. 3 mana is kinda slow for burn decks, but I also know one of the main problems with burn decks is they tend to run out of gas. Sword-Point Diplomacy can burn and provide card advantage. Sign in Blood on the other hand is a bit better, being 2 mana. Probably the better option would be Night's Whisper, but it's a bit out of budget.

  • Clawing Torment, as well as some cards like Sinister Possession and Contaminated Bond, can be pretty decent against more aggressive decks, but useless against more control decks. For this reason I opted to run card draw. I'll still consider you suggestion and add the Chancellor to the maybe, just to playtest and see how well it works.

The deck isn't meant to be aggro. I'm just dumb and wrote something in the descprition that isn't what I wanted to meant. I'll change it to aggressive.

Really appreciate the suggestions!

Some thoughts:

  • in the same way that Shock is too weak for burn to play, I suspect Fruit of Tizerus is too weak here… having a card only remove 2 life feels too low to be worth it.

  • if you’re trying to be aggro, both Sword-Point Diplomacy and Sign in Blood don’t feel appropriate. Both of these cards are slow and don’t apply any pressure to the opponent. Furthermore aggro decks shouldn’t have to worry about card draw as they’re aiming to close-out the game before that matters (and in general both these cards suck even if you’re wanting card draw).

  • as far as better options to replace the above, i’d suggest considering Chancellor of the Dross, and/or Clawing Torment. Torment just seems like it should rack up some good damage and keep your life total higher, while Chancellor feels a lot more risky (it’s not really castable and a dead draw), but could be good if you find it in your opening hand (immediate damage and an easy discard option when you smallpox)

If Lurrus is your companion, you can designate her(?) as such by putting

*CMPN*

next to her in the editing bay.

Past that, I'm wondering how good Searing Blaze is--seems like pretty bad on both the removal and faceburn fronts, especially since it only "turns on" on T3. Maybe a Fruit of Tizerus instead? Also, a Spikefield Hazard  Flip might do you good in place of a Mountain, especially if you lower your curve by removing Blaze.

Leviathanblaze Yes, I highly reccomend grixis, those are probably my three favorite colors to run, and I have also made a grixis deck. Keep in mind cards like Fruit of Tizerus Sorin's Thirst , a big benefit to running black is that you are now not only burning them, you're also gaining life at the same time, very beneficial. I would highly recommend Open the Graves as well, it is giving you extra value, especially chump blockers. Tainted Remedy Is a great way to deal with lifelink, if not in your actual deck, I recommend sideboarding it.

When casting a noncreature spell like Fruit of Tizerus for its Escape cost, would Tormod, the Desecrator trigger once for the escape cost being paid and a second time for the spell going onto the stack from the graveyard?

This definitely looks like a Dimir Mill deck. First off, since you're focused around Mindwrack Harpy , I'm going to recommend Ruin Crab or Hedron Crab . I'm going to keep recommending this because they're staples in mill for a reason.

It looks like you're going for a beat-stick with Relic Golem . I'd say replace it with Jace's Phantasm which is instead a 1 mana beat-stick that gets you a 5/5. However, most mill decks opt out of using a beat-stick since they're trying to deck out their opponent.

Fruit of Tizerus is a bit wasteful to put in this deck. Glimpse the Unthinkable for a more aggressive deck or Maddening Cacophony if you're going for a slower, yet more controlling, and less aggressive mill deck.

Finally, Drown in the Loch can be a good card in this deck. It's basically a Doom Blade and Counterspell glued together. What makes it even better is that Counterspell isn't even legal for modern.

Overall: This lacks focus... kind of. The edits are certainly an improvement, though there are some questionable card choices. This looks like a decent standard deck save for the sideboard. If you're planning on using this deck in modern, for higher-level play groups you want your average CMC to be around 2 or 3, especially in an aggressive deck.

Since this is a mill deck, I'd recommend going for a much more controlling approach vs an aggressive approach, since you have the advantage of your opponent's graveyard. Magic is a game of resources, probability, and the stack. Your opponent's graveyard is a resource. USE IT.

In the end, it's certainly a decent deck for a new player. Despite questionable card choices, it looks decent.

I’d give Butcher Ghoul the axe. Undying is nice, but since you aren’t really building a deck around taking advantage of that mechanic he’s the least coherent element here I’d say.

Fruit of Tizerus might also be a card to consider adding.
