Boon of Safety

Instant

Put a shield counter on target creature. (If it would be dealt damage or destroyed, remove a shield counter from it instead.)

Scry 1. (Look at the top card of your library. You may put it on the bottom of your library.)

Hey, there!

Grateful Apparition is a slight upgrade to Thrummingbird (or could run both easily).

Semester's End could be some good board wipe evasion in a pinch, and sets you up to come back swinging.

If you're looking to run big creatures and cheat them in, you can do a bit better than Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy. Defense of the Heart is low-key broken. Some other useful cards: Elvish Piper, Quicksilver Amulet, Lurking Predators. Depending on your average creature CMC, you could just run all of them and call it a day.

Kinnan does have the advantage of being instant speed and repeatable, but it's easier and cheaper (mana wise) to setup draw alongside play-from-hand effects than it is to put mana into that activated ability. I think it's just a bit too much of a slot investment to build into Kinnan as not-commander.

You probably want a Smothering Tithe and Rhystic Study in here unless your group runs truly obnoxious amounts of enchantment removal.

Boon of Safety with Atraxa is pretty useful, or Contractual Safeguard can do the same thing for all your creatures for just 2 additional mana. I'd probably prefer the latter if I had to choose, but both are good.

Happy building!

So, let's say that I have Mulldrifter and it has a Hyena Umbra, and a shield counter from Boon of Safety and then gets a Doom Blade on the face. Do I get to choose between the counter or the umbra? Or will they both leave?

xander11 Yeah I'd say Boon of Safety can probably be ditched also.

It might be worth considering Grateful Apparition and/or Thrummingbird too. They can make counters grow very quickly.

wallisface thanks for the feedback, I took out swords and the board wipes right away I'll probably remove opt as well but just until I get a little testing done they will stay in. Do you think it would be smart to remove Boon of Safety from the deck as well?

Seems super solid, my only small suggestion would be to mix in a couple Boon of Safety among your protection spells, maybe shaving one copy of Snakeskin Veil's and Tamiyo's Safekeeping each to make room.

With 7 pure protection spells you could have some games where you have a few of them in hand, and against an aggressive deck that isn't trying to remove your stuff much they could feel subpar as you decide whether to spend them for magecraft triggers. Boon isn't quite as good as a protection spell but is still pretty flexible, while being better as a proactive spell since the shield counter sticks around and you get a scry out of it.

If I have Boon of Safety, then cast it on Boros Reckoner, would it still trigger the ability of Boros Reckoner whenever he is damaged?

Hi! I used your deck as an starting point when I made my own and I like your comments and updates. Would love to know if you have found anything interesting in Streets of New Capenna.

I think Boon of Safety is amazing as it might be a less reliable "indestructible" giver at first, but allows for stacking for later turns. In combination with Zada you could end up with a bunch of creatures with an stupid amount shield counters each if you keep playing it every turn.

From the precon Commander decks I like Audacious Swap in combination with Monastery Mentor and other token creatures. Tenuous Truce also looks great in order to make some good friends
