Stuck between Jund and BUG

Modern forum

Posted on May 27, 2013, 6:06 p.m. by Brett05

Currently I am deciding between Jund and BUG for modern, and I am not sure which is the better choice. I've play tested both and have had just about the same W/L spread with each. I could really use some help deciding which deck, as well as if I should change up either of the decks. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. The two I am choosing between are Do the Creep and Rampaging Bob

as someone who plays a whole lot of jund in legacy, modern, standard and limited you have fairly solid lists on both sides, i would really come down to your play style more than the deck choices, long term i can see you having both and switching it up when you get tired of one. i know i do.

things that you are missing on the jund side, Slaughter Games this just wreaks combo decks, yes the cost is high but worth it. Extirpate is a little better than Surgical Extraction only because of split second, i have become a real fan of Bloodhall Ooze since we lost Bloodbraid Elf , if someone is not paying attention it gets beastly really quick, the other one i have take up since we lost Bloodbraid Elf are the swords, Sword of Fire and Ice , Sword of Feast and Famine , Sword of War and Peace , Sword of Light and Shadow , i normally run fire and ice, light and shadow main board with feast and famine side boarded, but it changes depending on the meta, Vampire Nighthawk s also are always a real help or some other flyer that can stall or take over the air, Maelstrom Pulse would also be a big help, to deal with planeswalkers and other permanents a like. If you want to pick up some of the BUG side, you can snag Dash Hopes i normally do not run this, in fact i do not think i have ever run it in a jund deck, but it is an option if you want a counter spell that is more like a smack in the face,

also pick up some Blightning they are a fun swap in when poeple think they have your deck nailed down for what it is going to do. as well as Dreadbore swap between this and Maelstrom Pulse , i do generally like maelstrom over dreadbore but that casting cost in modern can be a pain in some games. another great card for keeping people guessing, although not quite as powerful in modren but can still work is Olivia Voldaren

toss in some graveyard hate, Relic of Progenitus works really well with the Deathrite Shaman for graveyard control, however if you have to sac it, things can get out of hand quickly., or Grafdigger's Cage not the same level of synergy but it keeps decks in check better.

as for dealing with red deck wins, two best options on the table, Kitchen Finks , Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip , the finks see the table more often but really the huntmaster played well is a bloody work horse. and in some games you really notice when the huntmaster is missing, this is really the match up where you need to lie cheat and steal to get every bloody card you can out of their hand as quickly as you can, once they are in top deck mode you are laughing, if you let them have a hand you will most likely have your head taken off in some messy blow out.

as for tron, this is where land destruction cards come into focus Fulminator Mage or Ghost Quarter both really cut into their fun.

you can always benefit from Kessig Wolf Run even if it just a here have trample, no bonus, this can cause no end of grief for an opponent.
