1 v 1...ideas

Commander (EDH) forum

Ok so i just found out that in my area there are a few 1v1 tournaments. I mostly play in pods at a league and so i have NO idea what is viable in 1v1. I am looking for ideas to build the most competitive deck i can for said tournaments. I know i will probably be building from scratch but that is the nature of the beast for EDH. Any suggestions and why, will be extremely helpful. I play almost any style of deck but i prefer aggro. If there are anymore questions you need please ask. Thanks in advance!

Are these 1v1 tournaments using the Duel Commander or regular Conmander rules?

Duel Commander for the most part. But would be easy to slip in rocks if i needed to.

You could try Varolz, the Scar-Striped. I don't know how competitive it is, but a Voltron-esque strategy is pretty aggro, and both B and G are powerful colors.

What is your play style? If you don't mind kind of boring, drawn out matches, I'd recommend a blue based combo deck, if you like something a bit more "stompy," then a good voltron deck is probably the best.

Some combo commanders: Maelstrom Wanderer, Azami, Lady of Scrolls, The Mimeoplasm, Damia, Sage of Stone.

Some voltron commanders: Geist of Saint Traft, Isamaru, Hound of Konda, Uril, the Miststalker.

@Kryzis I prefer something more "stompy" but i can do combo as well i just enjoy fun deck. Even if its drawn out or fast. I believe Geist of Saint Traft is banned in 1v1. But i think Isamaru, Hound of Konda looks interesting. Thanks!

@jandrobard Your list has some good choices i will look a few up thanks!

Is Elf ball a thing in 1v1?? Since it wouldn't require any mana rocks, and has a ton of ramp built in.

Elfball is a thing, yes.

Varolz, the Scar-Striped is amazing. I built a deck around him a few days ago and it is cutthroat (would fit into your budget, too). It won 80% of the games I played with it so far (also against several oponents teaming up against it...)But you have to consider that it is a really simple strategy... 1. Fill your graveyard, 2. Put out Varolz, 3. Have something to always regenerate him, 4. Push through damage and win ...

The top aggressive decks in the format are Marath, Will of the Wild creatures, Anafenza, the Foremost/Doran, the Siege Tower tempo/midrange, Geist of Saint Traft/Jenara, Asura of War aggro-control, Sidisi, Brood Tyrant aggro, Rafiq aggro-control, and Captain Sisay midrange.

Other aggressive strategies have been picking up steam lately, including Grenzo Goblins and Titania, Protector of Argoth. There are a lot of viable decks, so play something you enjoy and are good with. You're more likely to win with a less common, less tuned deck that you know inside and out than with a netdeck that you're not experienced with.

Geist isn't banned in duel commander. The banlist is at duelcommander.com You can look on mtgtop8 for good decks, and the MTGSalvation community for duel commander is fairly active.
