Hokori Help

Commander Deck Help forum

I want to build a frustrating deck with Hokori, Dust Drinker but I'm having a hard time coming up with, well, enough taxing effects and actual win conditions. Anyone got some advice on how to build this?

Using Derevi, Empyrial Tactician as your general allows you to untap your permanents as well as give you access to Prophet of Kruphix and Seedborn Muse. Teferi, Temporal Archmage, Tezzeret the Seeker , and Mana Rocks allow you to use Stasis and Winter Orb without much repercussion. Hope that's a start. May your friends be your friends outside of MTG.

I'm not really wanting to go to Derevi, although I recognise just how powerful they are. Hokori's just got that right mix of being vaguely uncommon as a commander and forcing a different playstyle for me.

Thank you for the suggestions. The mana rocks seem essential for it, certainly.

I fucking love Hokori.

The deck is naturally slow and there are multiple directions you can take it in, mine being more creature based (hence the lack of The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale) and I think every build should be heavily focused on artifacts because they're generally what shit on people the most (which doesn't exactly necessitate Mishra's Workshop but if you're to idealize the deck then it should be in). You can check out my deck, as I think it's pretty good and that's shown in its performance, but I drew inspiration for a lot of it by looking around and picking out what I like from other people's decks.

This is EDH so naturally every deck has something different about it but in general you should have a very taxing style while still being able to maintain a board of your own and having ways to deal with anything your opponents manage to get out. The win conditions can vary, but if you really want to go for something fun try Barren Glory with a lot of wraths.

Thank you so much! I'll certainly try and draw up a plan from these suggestions. A Barren Glory alternate win-con does sound a lot of fun to try and pull off. For now, within budget, I'll try and make it a nice basic taxing + grinding them down .dec

So, I just found your help page. I made a Horoki deck recently which is meant to imitate the legacy deck Death & Taxes with the major addition of Winter Orb (being Horoki, of coarse). The strategy of my deck is to tax your opponents with effects such as those mentioned by SirFowler in the first post. If you want to see how a truly tax-heavy deck looks then feel free to browse Orb and Taxes.

I'm not asking you to follow my deck archetype, but this is my only advise to you: LOW MANA COST ONLY

Horoki will tax you and to optimize your own play you should build your deck with that tax in mind. All the while you want Horoki out early and often so you can't waste turns playing other higher mana cards, and that includes high cost ramp.

I know that there are artifact heavy Horoki decks and creature heavy decks and you can do whatever you want with your deck but your commander itself is a tax.
