Monowhite Counter Good Stuff for Khans of Tarkir, starring Phalanx Leader and Abzan Falconer.

With the introduction of Abzan cards that provide kick-ass abilities when creatures have counters, I've come to the logical conclusion that they must be integrated into a deck featuring heroic triggers. And what better way to do so than with a deck full of mono-colored creatures? Being mono-colored means no pain lands, no fetch lands and no lands entering the battlefield tapped. Let's outpace the wedge decks that will be flooding FNM!

The biggest fear with heroics is getting 2-for-1'd with auras. As I pointed out in my deck The Heroic Deck Paradigm Shift - Built for KTK, this can be mitigated with the use of instants. With the introduction of Defiant Strike, I felt that a I could now brew a mono-white heroic deck and make up for losing Ordeal of Thassa. While I do not have a direct replacement for Aqueous Form, Abzan Falconer providing flying for all is a strong answer.

On to the cards!

***** The Creatures *****

  • Abzan Falconer: Have a counter? How about you fly over the competition. Solid evasion.
  • Brimaz, King of Oreskos: Hail to the King, Baby. This guy is one of the best cards in Standard.
  • Fabled Hero : Heroic, double-strike. This guy can become a lethal problem very quickly with the right mix of instants.
  • Herald of Anafenza: A deceptive 1-drop. Given a few turns, he'll be pumped with counters and will have deployed some 1/1 Warrior tokens.
  • High Sentinels of Arashin: Game-ending threat. +1/+1 counters for each creature with a counter? I think this deck can support that. And it's got a counter-granting mana dump that doesn't require it to tap! Sweet.
  • Phalanx Leader : Heroic, and with Abzan Falconer, the core to this deck. Everyone on the battlefield gets a counter, thus triggering the abilities of the new creatures from Khans.
  • Preeminent Captain: With all the Soldiers in the deck, having one enter the battlefield tapped and attacking at not cost sounds like fun. Thanks to robrone9 for selling me on including the Captain.
  • Seeker of the Way : A great 2-drop with Prowess. Casting Ajani's Presence makes him a 4/4 indestructible lifelinker for the turn, which is pretty cool.

***** The Spells *****

  • Ajani's Presence : Triggers heroics. +1/+1 and indestructibility.
  • Defiant Strike: Triggers heroics. +1/+0 and provides card draw.
  • Feat of Resistance: Triggers heroics. I was a little hesitant to play this over Gods Willing, but the added counter is much more valuable than scrying in this deck, and the mana base can support it's cost
  • Banishing Light: Removal of all the things in our way.
  • Spear of Heliod: A +1/+1 anthem that brings with it the ability to destroy target creature that dealt damage to you this turn.
  • Suspension Field : Additional removal for all the fatties be carted out in Khans

** The Sideboard **

It's time for a new Standard, and time for a new Monowhite deck. I feel this one brings a solid and fun aggro strategy to the table.
