More FNM results. 3-1 —June 22, 2013

Sorry to those who have been following this deck for being quiet for a bit. Have had a fair bit of work and have been recently trying to put together an EDH deck (my first one!!) so I missed out on last week's FNM.

However, I played standard on Friday night and didn't do too badly. 3-1. Here are details on all the rounds.

2-0 vs Bant Enchant. Kind of a mirror match up, but it was my aggro vs his enchants. First game was fairly quick. My opponent had to mull down to 5 and only played checklands, which slowed him down long enough for me to beatdown with Cloudfin RaptorYoung WolfRapid Hybridization and Geist of Saint Traft. 2nd game was a little bit harder, we both had Geist of Saint Traft by turn 3. Thankfully the new legendary rules haven't kicked in and we both got rid of them. 4th turn I put out another Geist of Saint Traft and he didn't have anything to respond to it. Didn't sideboard any cards.

2-1 vs Gruulgari aggro (R/G/B). Should have been 2-0, but I made the mistake of forgetting that a bloodrushed Avacyn Pilgrim can hurt if you choose not to block. Other than my silly mistake, the match up was fairly even between my early game creatures and the Dreg Mangler my opponent seemed to always pull. Highlight was putting my own Rancor on one of the Manglers then exiling it with Selesnya Charm. Didn't sideboard on this either.

0-2 vs Azorius control. Basic win con of my opponent's deck was to use a bunch of counter spells and sorcery's and pump AEtherling with Runechanter's Pike. I was screwed fairly hard both games with mulling down to 5 and only getting checklands, then proceeding to get counterspelled. Sided in Sundering Growth to get rid of the pike, but wasn't able to draw it in time. Considering changing up my sideboard to contain counter spells (maybe in place of Glaring Spotlight?)

2-1 vs Golgari aggro. Like the last aggro deck, this was a fairly even match up. My opponent this time tried to draw the game out a bit by using Deathrite Shaman and spat out wolf tokens with Garruk Relentless  Flip. Lost the first game by being out-aggro'd. Sided in Pithing Needle and Tormod's Crypt for some lols. 2nd game I was able to completely null Garruk Relentless  Flip with the Pithing Needle and win early. Last game was quite a doozey and ended with my Master Biomancer finally seeing some good use. Both of us were sitting at 10 life. I had a 6/6Geist of Saint Traft (Thanks to Biomancer), 2 Strangleroot Geist and a Master Biomancer with 1 Rancor. Opponent had 2 Deathrite Shaman, 1 2/2 Wolf token and a Dreg Mangler. Drew a Pithing Needle and played it naming Deathrite Shaman, played the other Rancor on Master Biomancer to put him to 6 power, played a 6/7 [Cloudfin Raptor]] (because I can) then swung with Geist of Saint Traft. The angel came out as a 10/10 and won the game.

Overall still very happy with how this deck is going. I'm dreading the days where my checklands and Innistrad cards cycle out.

This is a good list, but I think it could be even faster while staying resilient. I would personally remove 2 Master Biomancer and 4 Zameck Guildmage for 3 Loxodon Smiter and 3 Spell Rupture and I'd probably also use 4 Rancor and 3 Unflinching Courage . I think it's advantageous to trade out Simic Charm for Selesnya Charm , as the trample will be better for you, making a 2/2 knight can evolve your guys and is an instant speed blocker, and the middle ability is good for a lot of stuff out there if it goes long. Spell Rupture is SO good here tho, as usually by turn 3 you can have 3 or 4 power on board, and sit on the counter beating face until they play that key spell (which you counter) and it seals the deal for you. It also might be advantageous to move Geist of Saint Traft to your sideboard to bring in games 2/3 after they board in removal, and instead play Voice of Resurgence main board. Regardless I enjoy this deck a lot and I hope you continue to fine tune it, I feel this could be a serious contender.

Hey mate, I really appreciate your suggestions!

I already switched the numbers on Rancor /Unflinching Courage . I'm not crazy on the idea of removing Master Biomancer or Zameck Guildmage , just because they both synergize so well with the undying creatures that I have. If i remove them, I'd probably have to switch the undying creatures as well.

I'll add 3x Selesnya Charm in place of 1x Zameck Guildmage , 1 Strangleroot Geist and 1x Simic Charm . I already have plenty of trample in Rancor /Unflinching Courage that I would probably end up using the latter 2 affects more often.

Flashing in a 2/2 vigilance soldier during my opponent's turn then giving the soldier unflinching courage on my next turn seems fairly strong (4/4 trample, lifelink, vigilance for total for 5 mana).

Simic Charm is still very useful for hexproof and bounce.

Unfortunately, I don't have any Voice of Resurgence at the moment and I'm not sure I want to pay $30+ for each one (even though I admit they are super awesome), so I'll probably keep Geist of Saint Traft mainboard for now.

Thanks again. I will keep this page updated with how I go at the next FNM.

No worries man, just some idea that might speed it up some! I get the Voice of Resurgence issue, haha I would also love to play them but not for 120+ a playset. Good luck with your matches and have a good day! :D

Forgot to add:

Simic Charm also combos well with Rapid Hybridization as a form of removal. Use the Hybridization on an opponent's creature, then bounce the token it produces with Simic Charm to remove both.

Thanks again for commenting :)

this deck is great, i however would replace Unflinching Courage for Ethereal Armor it would give your geist much more survivability. when comboed with rancor its +4/+2 trample and first strike for 2 mana

Cheers for the suggestion! I'll give it a shot and see how it plays out.
