[Competitive] Lumberjack Madness

Pauper RG (Gruul)

Sideboard

This deck is a result of previous experimentation with a Rakdos Madness Tempo deck, which evolved and turned into what you see now, with great success.

Best starts are casting a Arrogant Wurm or optimally a Hooting Mandrils by using Orcish Lumberjack . You can even cast Mandrils on turn 2 using an Ash Barrens or an Evolving Wilds because of Delve.

Arrogant Wurm is better used with madness by any of our enablers, optimally at instant speed. Reckless Charge allows for some sweet 7 damage when casting any of our beaters.

The rest of the deck works as an usual madness deck. Focus on value and on using madness for card advantage, but keep the tempo going. Do not get crazy using Wild Mongrel 's discard unless you clearly see an advantage on it (such as casting a wurm turn 3 with flash). In this meta, though, tempo is a big factor, and should be prioritized depending on the matchup.

When using Faithless Looting , unless you see a clear target for some of our removal, leave a green mana open, since more often than not you will draw some Mandrils with a filled graveyard.

Updates:

Post Gush ban and Modern Horizons release, the deck has been updated to a more tempo version, removing the lightning axes for the absence of Gurmag Angler and adding extra artifact hate for Arcum's Astrolabe and a playset of Vines of Vastwood to better combat Ephemerate decks, protect from removal and provide a nice pump.
