FNM RESULTS (10/23/15) —Oct. 24, 2015

Unfortunately I could not get a hold of 2 Dragonlord Dromoka so I was unable to test out the deck as it's been updated on the site, and ran the version prior to it. As far as the planeswalker, someone mentioned I run too many of them and he is right. I felt it at tonight's FNM. One Ob Nixilis Reignited and Narset Transcendent already got cut. I am also thinking of either running 1 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar in the MB and 1 in the SB. Gideon is just so good it's unreal.

RESULTS

GAME !: I lost 2-0. I went up against Jeskai Black and I just got rocked both games. On the first game I got screwed with mana and didn't get a fetch or a second source of black mana, what are the odds. So I sat with 2 Languish and a Ruinous Path in hand while he was just chunking away at me. The second game I just didn't draw any Digs or Anticipates, so I ran out of answers very fast and eventually once his threats started sticking I had no chance.

GAME 2: I won 2-0 against Atarka Red. FIrst game was I was on cruise control, I think my opponent got in for 5 damage, and then that was it as I answered pretty much everything and when I dropped my Ojutai he just scooped. Game 2 my opponent pulled off a turn 3 win by dealing 36 points of damage, that was fun to watch. Game 3 was pretty much same as game one.

GAME 3: I went 2-0 against Abzan Aristocrats. Unlike last week when against this deck I got utterly land screwed and never drew answers, this time around I got some pretty good hands. Turns out this deck is actually very easy to play against when luck isn't against me. Both games ended the same way:survived long enough to drop Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, wipe the field, and have my opponent scoop.

GAME 4: Ended in a tie against a Esper Walker control with a splash of red and green. This deck was fun to watch, looked very solid. First game I kept a hand with 6 lands and an Ugin for whatever ungodly reason. Second game he got screwed on lands and I took the win. Third game went to time and neither of us could end the game in the last 5 turns. As always, playing against control decks is always fun.

Overall I am pleased with the deck, and noticed some obvious changes that need to be made. I really wanted to test out Dromoka in the deck before gameday but oh well.

Made some changes, after trying out the suggested changes at FNM. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hey it's me again ;) This version looks solid, I would take out 1 Ob, but not both, he can be pretty decent. I took out my scatters for horribly awry and think it's been better, especially if you're not running Jace. Try switching out 1 ruinous path for a silkwrap or complete disregard I think, I was using them as 1 ofs in my MB and they helped a ton. I have a couple friends who go to a lot of major events and they threw 1 or 2 Monastery Mentors in their esper lists and have had success with that, especially against aggro. Sorin, Solemn Visitor is probably better than Narset if you do add the mentors. Anyway since "Dark Jeskai" is basically "Red Esper" I'm going to be playing around with some of those builds for awhile. Best of luck!

Hey Slowgod!

Thanks again for your input :D

Yeah, reason I wanted to take out Ob was because he doesn't have as much of an impact as I initially thought. Half the times he feels like an expensive Ruinous Path. With Anticipate, Dig, and Ojutai I can dig through my entire deck pretty fast, and if we count in a possible 8 life I could lose from fetches, his + ability doesn't do much a ton of good to be honest. I think you are right thought, and I will hold it as a one of.

I did run Horribly Awry in the MB last FNM and I can't say I regretted it. I just have an obnoxious fear of not being able to counter whatever is cast. I think though Horribly Awry is probably best in the MB, I will see. I was honestly just thinking, as I popped open T/O, side a copy of Ruinous Path because there are a TON of creatures that other faster removal hits regardless of power constraints. I also never have awakened a single one of my lands with either [[card:Ruinous Path] or [card:Scatter to the Winds]] hehe, I like keeping mana open.

You make a fair point about Monastery Mentor. I actually saw a couple of builds on here that used him, and after asking them it seemed like it worked out well for them. I personally never thought I could pump out a huge amount of tokens with it, but it can be a thing. I would definitely throw Sorin back in if I ever run the Mentor though.

Thanks for your suggestions! :D

How has Narset Transcendent been working out? I've tried her in a couple of my own builds but always felt she was lack-luster as her +1 isn't always card advantage and her -2 is fairly average with control's want of being reactive since you have to spend mana on your own turn. Granted, being able to rebound Dig Through Time is pretty nuts, but it still just seems a bit counterintuitive to me.

To be honest? She is a bit more disappointing than I wanted her to be. I really wanted her to be good, but she is just ok. Doubling up removal or a Dig is cool, and getting her -9 out can shut down control decks completely. I was thinking after a couple of games of replacing her with an utter end, or a counter, or another copy of Dragonlord Ojutai.

If it were me, I'd honestly go with 1 or more Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip if you have them. He's an all star in this build.

Also, if you're feeling frisky with how easy mana fixing just got with the new tango lands, Dragonlord Dromoka is a great plug-in. I've had her in my dragon control decks since before rotation and have been doing really well with her. She protects your Dragonlord Ojutai when he attacks since they can't play spells during your turn, and the lifelink is a huge boost of confidence for you when you're playing against Siege Rhinos or aristocrat sacrifice decks. Here's my list for reference: Dragons > Eldrazi.

Cool build in general, though. +1 from me.

I have actually been thinking of splashing green, if anything because the other Esper player at my shop does so and I wanted to test it out myself.

Unfortunately I do not have any copies of Jace, and I refuse to buy any of them hehe. If I did have any I would run them though.

Will take a peek at your deck, thanks again RhinoSmash !

The more I think about it, also I apologize for the doublepost, the more I feel like including 2 copies of Dragonlord Dromoka. How would you go about fixing my land base to make the inclusion? I am not exactly too fond of running something like Opulent Palace, although it may not bee too bad because Dromoka would come down late game.

What is your opinion of the following changes, if I was to make the inclusion:

-1 Ob Nixilis Reignited-1 Narset Transcendent+2 Dragonlord Dromoka

-2 Shambling Vent-1 Blighted Cataract-1 Prairie Stream+2 Haven of the Spirit Dragon+2 Canopy Vista

Haha, don't blame you on the Jace. If I didn't get my three early on before they hit the $25 mark, I'd be over them, too.

Good luck tomorrow night at FNM!

No worries at all on the double post, talking magic is my thing, haha. As far as removing 1 ob nixilis and 1 narset, I'm all for it. Ob is incredibly powerful, but you have plenty of other 5 drops that you'd rather see.

The changes I'd make to the mana base: -1 blighted fen (colorless mana is a huge risk in decks that constantly need double blue and double black and you've already got Foul-Tongue Invocation for sac effects), -2 shambling vents, -1 blighted cataract, -2 prairie stream, +3 haven of the spirit dragon (late game, this is always a great draw, and when you can draw land and still be excited about it, it's a pretty great feeling), +3 canopy vista. This gives you 17 blue sources, 15 black sources, 13 white sources, 7 green sources and 4 green/white dragon sources. The only reason I plugged in opulent palace is because running my mana base like this made me a little light on black, but it was still fairly consistent (especially with Anticipate).

Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot for the quick reply! I have a small window of time to head to the card shop before tomorrow and was about to head out hehe. I had already made some changes to the deck that I didn't quite update yet (like having 1 Haven of the Spirit Dragon in place of Blighted Cataract).

I guess I was close enough with the changes. I am pretty excited to test it out and see how it goes. Dromoka is definitely a powerful card, especially against the two decks I am having trouble with.

You bet. Keep us updated with your results.

October 22, 2015 7:45 p.m.

Why the Gideon? You have like no synergy with him.

October 23, 2015 8:17 a.m.

He is arguably the best planeswalker in the format? I have no synergy with Ugin or Ob Nixilis but they are there. Gideon pumps out tokens, and while not as fast as Elspeth did, it can clog the board if left unchecked. He is also an Indistructible 5/5 beater that avoids a good chunk of removal while a creature.

If you happen to have suggestions on what I should run instead I welcome it. I can see where you are coming from though: i should be packing more control to protect/clear the way for when I throw out the dragons.

I can probably live without Gideon, but I never really regretted having him in hand. There were times when I drew him when I was missing white mana, and that was ablittle awkward, but it happened only twice as far as I remember.
