The Best Card in Standard

Standard forum

As of May 10th, today, I want to know what your guys' opinions are on the best card or the top 3 cards in standard right now. JOU was just released and its been pretty rapidly shaping the meta into something entirely different, and I'd like to know what you guys think of it.

Mutavault . It's as easy as that.

Mutavault is playable in almost every single deck, only takes up a land slot and gives an emergency creature for 1. As far as I'm concerned, the only deck Mutavault doesn't belong in is 5 color bestow, which isn't even a thing. Control can use it as a finisher. Aggro can use it to add creatures. Burn can use it as a blocker. It fits in every deck and is strong no matter where it is played.

@TexasDice & JA14732 What I meant was, cards that weren't good before that now are good.

Uuuhh... Anger of the Gods ?

The red decks are pretty fast now. On the play, Rakdos Cackler , into Burning-Tree Emissary , into Gore-House Chainwalker , These creatures swing for 16 damage before a Supreme Verdict can even help. Anger of the God's reduces to 9. It's something! -

It's also amazing against Humans and decent against Black. Especially if they continue to play Pack Rat and Nightveil Specter .

Mana Confluence is something that didn't see play before and is seeing a lot of play now.

With aggressive decks flying up the charts I feel Boros Reckoner is a great meta call.

Oh wait was this thread serious? Um...

  1. Thoughtseize

  2. Sphinx's Revelation

  3. D Sphere or Hero's Downfall

InconspicuousPotato, so you weren't serious the first time. Seemed like a well reasoned argument....

That should be a question mark.... You knew what I meant....

May 12, 2014 8:41 p.m.

It was serious but I think basic lands shouldn't really count. If lands counted I would do:

1, All 10 shocklands

  1. Scrylands

  2. Swamp

Swamps and Fixing are the best.

May 12, 2014 10:36 p.m.

Best card is Mutavault . Thoughtseize is next. Sphinx's Revelation is third.

Sphinx's Revelation . Draws cards, gains life, and is instant speed. Control or midrange, I play it.

Okay new rule since you guys are such snots. No lands and no reprints, theros block only.

May 14, 2014 11:38 p.m.

I don't see how stating that lands are the best card in standard is snotty. Or how reprints. I mean, reprints are in standard. And Thoughtseize is awesome.

That's too restrictive. I'm sorry, but land is the most powerful card type in the game. You don't win because of your Aetherling swinging for lethal; you won because your land base was up to scratch. When land fills multiple roles, it's extraordinarily powerful, since it's free to play. For example, Mutavault is a free creature, and for 1 can become huge. The temples give you 2 mana and also control your library. Shocklands can be fetched with multiple different kinds of ramp. We're not being snots-we're telling the honest truth. The lands in this standard are really powerful.

Mutavault is awful. Because I have none.

Theros block only? Its a little tougher to pick, its hard to tell where things are going. If I had to list my FAVORITES:

  1. Thoughtseize
  2. Thassa, God of the Sea
  3. Brimaz, King of Oreskos

Honorable mentions:

  1. Master of the Feast (discards gonna be a thing...even if I have force it with a crowbar and my Andre the Giant mask)
  2. Athreos, God of Passage

Sorry Green. I don't think its your block

1 = Thoughtseize : You get information and can deal with ANY non land card as early as turn 1

2 = Courser of Kruphix : ANY midrange deck is defined by this card: R/G Monsters, BUG, Junk, RUG, etc. It's TOO good and gives a lot of card advantage if not dealt with

3 = Mana Confluence : Fixes ANY multi colored deck and when paired with Courser of Kruphix you minimize your life loss. 3 colored decks should be running 2 of these and drop a couple of shocks/temples

Thoughtseize . Played on turn one it gives you a huge advantage.

Go through the top tier standard decks and almost every other card can be answered either the same turn or the next turn and many of them can be answered with multiple spells.

There's this joke I like to tell right before I play against an opponent when I know they are playing Mono Black.

"How do you stop a turn 1 Thoughtseize ?"

"I don't know...?"

"You don't"

This is funny to me because the answer to the riddle is unexpected. Second, it's true. Third, people who play Mono Black want to win which means they probably take the game pretty seriously. This exchange is the mental equivalent of admitting your about to get run over by an actual Tank (with treads and a cannon longer than an SUV) and there is nothing you can do about it.

Sure we all face that feeling at some point but if we're honest with ourselves usually we could have made different plays to have avoided the situation.

Going through this brief three line dialogue shows your opponent that they're the kind of person who doesn't want to box because in boxing they're not allowed to punch you before the bell rings and you know it.

To continue the Tank analogy: If YOU get to go first and your not playing mono black yourself but your opponent is then the best you can do is throw out a small dog so that after the Tank launches a shell in your direction destroying your infrastructure it at least has a speed bump before it kills you. Oh but wait, I forgot Mono Black tanks can fly! Ho ho ho!

I could go on and on about the card but the cold hard truth is I could play it to but I don't want to shell out the cash for a play set so i'm just going to shut up about it now.
