Which is currently the best card in standard in your mind? Thragtusk ? Bonfire of the Damned ?

Snapcaster Mage is certainly one of the most used, Rancor is another big one. My pick would be one of those two. Hard decision which though.

lolol Cirdan13.

@Dake, Rancor ? you really think so?

Yes, that card is stupid good in any deck that has green. It isn't as big of a game changer as Thundermaw Hellkite (another pick I forgot to mention) but I think it'll give a lot of decks that extra push in close games.

this is a tough question to answer.

what is the best creature? What is the best instant / sorcery / enchantment?

It really depends on what each player likes and what style of play they prefer.

I don't think there is anything as dominant as Jace, The Mind Sculpter right now and I doubt you can find a card in standard that will make people consistantly rage quit over a single spell.

I thought about this the other day and really had a tough time with it. There are a number of cards that are Very good in the current standard but the best card is difficult to name.

I went with the best card from each set in standard and went from there.

Innistrad's best card is handsdown - Snapcaster Mage , his text should really be like the old staples commercials. "Yeah, I've got that." Best tool period.

Dark Ascension was a little harder as there were a few that are really good, but none particularly stand out. I went with Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip - it gives life, it gives two creatures with a total of 4/4 power and has the ability to transform dealing 2 damage to a creature and a player and have a power of 4/4 not to mention it can repeat the process over again. Better than the other cards there that were vying for that spot ie Gravecrawler , card:Geralf's Messenger, Falkenrath Aristocrat

Best Card in avacyn restored is tough. As far as creatures go, Griselbrand is insane. It gives card advantage like crazy. Helps to heal you if you need it to and is a 7/7 flyer. Only thing it doesn't have going for it is its mana cost (easily cheated out by Unburial Rites ) However the miracle cards kinda ran away with this one. Have to go with Bonfire of the Damned . It deals damage to the opponent putting them on a clock and eliminates their entire board position.

Best card in m13 - Thragtusk . Life, board position and when it leaves the battlefield you maintain a semblance of board position. Yes please. Its reaction with Cloudshift , and Restoration Angel make it that much better

Best card in RTR - Jace, Architect of Thought - It's +1 is actually very effective right now and hinders a lot of decks, its -2 is equally powerful and can give you great card advantage and increases your overall card quality as well. Its final ability may not be the best, but the first two abilities are really all you need it for anyway.

From there I decided that the general utility of Snapcaster Mage makes it better than the others. Though Jace 4.0 and Bonfire were difficult not to place in that top spot, Snapcaster's ability to always have an answer for something makes it the best card in standard imo. It may not be used as much as it has been in the past, it is just waiting to be used in high demand again.

@Cirdan13 I know right? For some odd reason that I don't quite understand, people keep trading them to for almost nothing

I want a Battle of Wits deck because its the 2nd best card in standard

Innistrad: Snapcaster Mage .

Dark Ascension is harder. Gravecrawler and card:Geralf's Messenger are being used so much in jund decks, it's hard not to go with one of them. Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip of course, is also amazing. Pretty hard to decide, but yeah, I'll go with hunmaster.

Avacyn Restored: Bonfire of the Damned . I don't think it's as hard a choice as you make it out to be, rckclimber777 :). I think bonfire is almost hands down the best card in avacyn restored.

M13: Thragtusk . Not that much debate there :P.

Return to Ravnica is harder for me. I don't know as much about Jace, Architect of Thought . Lotleth Troll , the before mentioned jace, Abrupt Decay , Angel of Serenity is being used a TON. I'm not sure about who wins.

Over all it's really hard to say what the BEST card is (besides Drainpipe Vermin of course).

Innistrad: Geist of Saint Traft . I have to go against the grain here and say that it is better than Snapcaster Mage in this current standard, if only because there was so much hate for that card printed in RTR.

Dark Ascension: Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip or Falkenrath Aristocrat , though I lean towards Huntmaster.

Avacyn Restored: Bonfire of the Damned is not seeing as much play now with cheaper options being more accessible, my pick is Cavern of Souls which isn't seeing as much play right now but when people see how powerful countering is right now, they will accommodate their mana base with this card.

M13: Thragtusk is pretty ridiculous.

Return to Ravnica: Jace, Architect of Thought is an amazing card, but not 50 dollars good. That being said, it's still probably the best print in RTR

Thragtusk . Just added him to my deck and was the best decision I ever made

If you want per set I'll do that too:

Innistrad: Olivia Voldaren . Yes I am not saying Snapcaster Mage because olivia is more of a game changer herself.

DA: Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip . If you can't remove that it is game over. I'm also a huge fan of Sorin, Lord of Innistrad so that's a close second.

AR: Griselbrand . Yup, when he gets reanimated turn three against you you can no longer say he is not the best.

M13: Thragtusk , obviously

RTR: I'm going to have to go with the majority here and say Jace, Architect of Thought

ISD: Snaps all the way. geist of st traft in seond

DKA: Huntmaster is the best, but I like geralf's messenger the most

AVR: Bonfire of the damned, griselbrand in second, blood artist gets honorable mention

M13: Thragtusk, SUblime archangel second

RTR: Abrupt decay has most possibel uses in other formats, Jace is good in standard so i guess it gets my vote.

Gatecrash: You know that 1 guy who they prewviewed? He is so OPed

@buffy - My difficulty with Avacyn restored really wasn't that big a deal, but I did want to highlight Griselbrand as I believe that he is one of the best creatures period. Not just standard. If I was going to play a reanimator deck in any other format he would be my number 1 pick simply because of all that he offers. Unfortunately his 8 mana cost that includes BBBB is just far too much in most cases. He is however in my 4 color renanimator over angel of serenity. I mean he's a card:Yawgmoth's Bargain wrapped into a creature who gives you life back. Thats pretty insane.

To all those who are hating on snapcaster. I just don't get it. The thing about magic is, its a situational game. Each situation requires a different answer. The reason why JMTS was soo good was because he provided so many answers. Allowing you to Brainstorm for solutions to problems, bouncing a creature on your opponent's side or yours depending on what the result will be (slowing your opponent down or searching your library for a Batterskull ) Manipulating your opponent's draw when they have run into a problem with not having lands or has too many lands. Snapcaster provides a similar utility although more blatantly. You can cast a Dissipate from your graveyard if you need a counter, you can cast a Unsummon if you need to slow down your opponent. You can even cast Midnight Haunting on your opponent's turn to give you a surge of 4 power and 3 toughness. Geist, Olivia are good but they have one purpose, beatdown. Alright Olivia has a couple uses (direct damage to creatures, take control of creatures, beat down), nonetheless they're all the same general purpose. In my mind Snaps is the clear favorite in Innistrad and probably the overall favorite as well simply for its versatility.
