WitherBloom Pest - STD Golgari

Standard* BG (Golgari) Lifegain Sacrifice Tokens

Toherden

Sideboard

Here is a Golgari deck for Strixhaven ! It's a Strixhaven standard deck. I would to share a test and I hope that deck can works well. However, I don't know if it can take a real place in the standard meta. The main goals is : make a lot of life and pest tokens. Why ? To draw a lot of cards and flood the board. For sure, the main strat is for a control purpose/anti-aggro.

Creatures Cards :

Eyetwitch : This card is, in my opinion, the best T1 drop in black from Strixhaven. A 1/1 flying that can be sacrificed to wheel your hand, that's insane for 2 reasons in this deck : Blex will buffs it because it's a bat (2/2 flying) and, otherwise you can tutor a Lesson -> Basic Conjuration for exemple. This just a good card and I don't know what's better for the moment.

Valentin is a really good card for this deck : good creature for T1, you can make a "graveyard hate" into a board advantage during the game (more pest tokens). Otherwise, you can switch him to Lisette, that's clearly a win condition because you can sacrifice your pest tokens for making a massive life gain and exploit her ability.

Dina, Sould Steeper is simply a good T2 to poke your opponent with pest tokens and, it's also a sac outlet that can be usefull if you sacrifice something big (like Daemogoths).

Blex, Vexing Pest is your Lord in the deck. You gonna buff all pest tokens, and cards from your sideboard (Lotus Cobra, or Arasta tokens). His fliping face is just insane as tutor, because you don't really lose life in this deck (pest tokens and draining).

Callous Bloodmage is a nice polyvalent card for this deck : create a pest tokens (before Daegomoth comes into play), draw a card or a graveyard hate, you'll awlways do a good choice. And sac it earlier as possible to reanime him with Rushed Rebirth.

Daemogoth Titan and Daemogoth Woe-Eater are the mains pieces for the deck. These cards are interesting because of the ratio between CCM and its power. -> you can simply play these cards as goods creatures (add trample with Lisette), or sacrifice Daemogoths with Plumb the Forbidden/Tend the Pests for a big value (draw or tokens). You can counter the disadvantage of sacrifice ability easily with your pests tokens, so, it's not a problem anymore. In addition, the Woe-Eater is a good cards alone if you sacrifice himelf with the first capacity.

Others :

Plumb the Forbidden is the best drawing cards in the deck. You make a lot of tokens that give you 1 life, so, you don't really pay 1 life everytime you copy the spell, you just draw a lot for 2 CCM (draw twice is already good for this cost). And the most important thing : it's an instant, so, if your opponent cleans your board you can sacrifice all your creatures in response to keep your cards advantage. This is not bad at all.

Rushed Rebirth. This card is insane in a sacrifice deck because you can put a big pressure. Into a Blex/Callous -> you can play all your cards with a lesser cost (Eyetwitch, Valentin, Dina). Into Daemogoths -> you're happy to play again a Callous and all other cards with lesser CCM. It's really a great tutor, AND, you can use it onto an opponent's creature, so, I let you imagine it's power.

Tend the Pests is usefull for making board advantage if you use it onto a Daemogoth -> 11 pests tokens or 7 tokens + discard + draw + life gain (always more life gain). Here is a good loop for a win condition, that's why I didn't add more expensive CCM cards in the decklist.

Mortality Spear is just a good synergic removal for every permanent type (planewalkers/enchantments/artifacts). It's already good for its cost so it's better for 2.

Witherbloom Command makes a lot of things. You can mill, and recurse your fabled passages (that's why there is some Lotus Cobra in the sideboard), remove an artifact or enchantments with 2 CMM or less, kill a "1 toughness" creature and drain more life for Dina/Mortality/Fortifying capacities.

Village Rites is the only one cards out of Strixhaven, but is power is impressive in this kind of deck.

Side Board :

The sideboard is also an anticipation for the news decks, that's clearly speculative (same for all the deck maybe). But if we take in consideration the new "maybe" meta, there is a lot of sorceries/instants spells. So I adapted it in consequences with some classicals side cards from older golgari decks.

For exemple : Arasta is a good option in my opinion : you make more sac tokens, these tokens are spiders and buffed by Blex. But, in addition, it has "reach", an important things because it counters all dragons (Goldspan or Galazeth)

I add 2 Sedgemoor Witch because there is a lot of instant and sorceries in the main deck. I don't know what's better between Callous and this card, but there is a good synergy, especially with Plumb the Forbidden. The others cards are just stuffs from classicals golgari decks : more ramp with Cobra (Fabled are welcome and can be recursed with the command), graveyard hate with Ooze (and gain life).

The lessons cards are just some suggestions for this kind of deck, but of course, we're not enough familiar with these type of cards to say that it is a good choice.

This is a test, and I count on you to give me suggestions or ideas ;-) For sure, I'll try it on MTGA earlier as possible and make some feedbacks about this deck.

Updates Add

After a few games, I can confirm that the deck is valid and really fun to play with (only for casual player). The main strategy is enough unpredictable for the moment, but I think the deck need some upgrades to be much better. I will change the Heartless Act with 3 Baleful Mastery against reanimate decks, Anax or humans orzhov decks. Rushed Rebirth is useless because you'll draw enough to find everything, in addition, you've got Basic Conjuration and Search for Blex, it's enough tutoring/drawing cards.

Mortality Spear is definitly better than Hearthless Act, because you can remove everything for 2 everytime, if you didn't get +1 life (to activate the cost reducing) for the turn it's because you made a mistake somewhere. I add a Beledros because if you get an opportunity to play the second ability you can win with a Blex or Daemogoth in your hand for example. Or, another option like : Blex and Lisette (Valentin flip), it's really powerfull if you can pay 2 mana for Lisette's ability more than once.

Now, I tested a lot of matchups and I prefer the Daemogoth Titan : we've got too much value by drawing, but our board is too weak against some decks. I prefer to be focused on the main synergy and play the deck like a combo deck, because it's more interesting. NOTE : For the moment I have a budget deck for this list. So, it's unplayable on the ladder, you must have the entire decklist if you want something fun and valuable.
