Trust me, I'm a fungi!

Coffee brown mud squished between the hermit's toes as he scurried across the marshland, glancing in all directions as if he had heard something. He came to a halt, his left arm reached back to scratch an itch on his shoulder blade. Little flesh accommodated his prominent bones. They protruded at odd angles, looking like a child playing under a sheet. When he found the location of the itch, he picked at it gently. The cause was the sprout of yet another mushroom. On his skin an entire colony of fungus inhabited that side of his body. Spreading along his ribcage, they were especially thick on his shoulder. Oh, how they itched. He arched his neck to the left as a shiver ran down his spine sending his entire body into a short convulsion. "Forgive me darlings, what's mine is yours. Little babies are hungry aren't we? Patience my loves, Daddy will bring food, enough for all..." A bird leapt from a nearby branch. A dash of red was all the frail man saw as the creaking of wood echoed through the forest temple. "Yes, my loves. As the sun burns red, so shall we feast. Blood will be ours tonight." The hermit shivered again, and so did the mushrooms adorning his body. He hurried forward with haste, and came upon a weathered shack. The roof was built of branches and brush, and sagged in some areas. The walls were covered in thick moss that seeped out a green ooze. Slender fingers reached towards the shelter door. The fingernails were yellow, cracked and dirty. The door released a quiet screech as it was pushed open. A foul stench lurched to the open airway. The man's eyes closed and his nostrils flared as he sucked in a deep breath and then smiled. The shack was but one room. Garbage, bones and various dishes littered the floor. Some of the dishes were filled with a black sludge that could be months old. The only pieces of furniture in the shack were an old mattress that was smeared with dark stains and ripped along its edges, and a small table. Upon the bed was a frail body, with each limb tied to opposite bed posts.
