Addicted to the Junk (Suggestions)

Standard BGW (Abzan, Junk) Midrange

w4rped

Sideboard

Post Rotation Junk. Simple enough strategy, get Elspeth out.

The cards are all obvious. Control their board until you can get Ajani out to dig for Elspeth, or you just find her. Overrun the opponent with creatures once you have board control.

Suggestions are welcome and even encouraged. This deck works, but could be better.

This week I was depressed with how this worked. Mana base has proven to be consistent enough that I don't have to worry about it that much, but the cards are just not able to compete with some of the decks out there.

My first loss came to a green devotion type deck. Basically just overwhelmed me with mana and big creatures. Didn't have enough removal to deal with all the early creatures that fueled Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. Second loss came to Jund Walkers. First game I lost to a few misplays, but overall his deck was just better. Couldn't deal with the synergy of the walkers, or get rid of them fast enough once they got started.

Third loss was to a Junk pillow fort type build. Very home brew, and quite effective at removing all of my basic necessities. The constellation effects became very overpowering when combined with all the removal spells and the card draw from Eidolon of Blossoms.

I will be changing this deck around soon if I can figure out what to do.

Comments

I have created a similar deck, it is a bit cheaper, but if you are not constrained on money, i would make similar suggestions. i would cut 2 of each pain land, Mana Confluence included. and add some basics. Also, read the bones over sign in blood may be a good idea. 4 silences main board is good, but does make the deck slower, you could consider moving 1 or 2 to side. My deck runs Brain Maggot instead of Brimaz, purely for financial reasons. Brimaz does draw a lot of removal which is good for your other bombs. He is fast but brain maggot also allows you to take threats from the opponent. I also run 2 Elspeth, Sun's Champion but could consider dropping 1, even though she is a good win-con for the ultimate. I think the main issue is not getting enough protection, you have Sylvan Caryatid and Courser of Kruphix to chump. i see your main issue as your mana base. you have no basics, and although the scry lands can be good with courser, its too slow to not have a turn 2 caryatid to protect yourself. The scry lands could be cut to 3 apiece, something i did to save money and have more basics that come into play untapped. you are getting too low on life from having 12 pain lands and not enough untapped play lands that dont hurt you. thats your main problem i think. hope this helps!

Pain lands usually aren't a problem beyond turn 3 because I can shuffle around the way I use them. The only time they really hurt is when they are ALL I draw. I might consider going down a couple of them for that reason though. The scry lands to me are key though. I need to sift through the deck to get to elspeth as fast as I can and the scry is amazing for that. I don't think that cutting them down will be very good in that aspect. I may end up cutting an elspeth and a silence the believers simply because I don't need them on turn one. I run the sign in blood over the read the bones simply for the 1 mana difference. Do you really think that the scry 2 is worth that extra turn it'll take to play it? I am honestly considering moving it to the sideboard since I rarely use it and when I do, it is almost useless anyways. Card draw is not super important since most of my stuff comes out slow anyways. I am definitely going to take into consideration the brain maggots. They work like thoughtseize does minus the 2 life and can really help keep me up.

I'd cut an Elspeth add 1 Garruk, Apex Predator and somehow try to fit in 3 Polukranos, World Eater and 3 Reaper of the Wilds

In my experience Polukranos, World Eater and Reaper of the Wilds are not as effective as I'd like them to be. Polukranos helps out sometimes on turn 4, and the scry is nice from the reaper, but they have not worked for me in the past.Garruk, Apex Predator is great, but super slow. Half the problem that this deck has is that I can't get Elspeth, Sun's Champion out faster. Waiting an extra turn wouldn't work very good for me, I think. Thanks for the suggestions, but I was hoping for something a little more solidifying.

I also feel your mana base is what needs work; you have 21 black sources and only 16 green even though most of your creatures are green. I also feel that having so many double black spells in the main deck compounds this problem by making all the black sources kind of necessary. I recommend switching Thoughtseize to the main and Silence the Believers to the side. Just by doing that you should comfortably be able to take out a few pain lands for good old fashion forests. Suddenly you'll be dropping turn one arbor elves more effectively and in turn cast faster Elspeths! (Note: I wrote this and then saw the changes you already made, they are good, but I feel my comments still stand. With Banishing Light in the main I don't even know if silence the believers belongs in the deck at all. you need seven mana to make it better than banishing light or Hero's Downfall and by then you really might as well be playing Garruk. Thoughtseize on the other hand will always be castable and useful, if painful.)

@avatarofjoe Thanks for the suggestions. I took the Thoughtseize out because they never seem to help me when I have them in hand. I will reconsider them though. I think you underestimate Silence the Believers . Hitting 2 creatures late game is definitely nice, but the fact that it exiles makes it better than Hero's Downfall for creatures. The fact that the creatures can't come back makes it better than Banishing Light . Then on top of everything, it exiles auras as well making bestows meaningless. Now I understand that downfall and banishing light both target plainswalkers, and banishing targets anything really, but the main reason the Silence are in there is for creatures. I just think you are giving Silence the Believers a bum rap. I may be considering going down to 2 of them, but I think they are needed.

The mana base is going to be worked on. That is for sure. I don't know that I need generic forests, but it's a possibility that I do. I am hoping that the 25th mana is going to change stuff around for me, especially since it's Urborg. I have yet to test this current configuration, but FNM is tomorrow so we will see. Updates will come after I lose, hah.

Archangel of Thune and Courser of Kruphix is stupid good. Although you said you wanted to keep it rotation friendly.

August 31, 2014 12:50 a.m.

@AngelofSerenity Yes, Archangel of Thune is amazing if you can get her out with a life gainer like Courser of Kruphix or Nyx-Fleece Ram . But yes, I am rotation friendly only. Many people think I should play with the cards that are heading out, but I want to prepare for NOT using them. I don't want to one day be devastated because my deck lost some of it's most powerful cards. Plus with the new block format with the new set, I have to prepare to integrate stuff into THESE cards. And having this deck working will make it a lot easier to do so. Thanks for the suggestion though. Maybe we will see a reprint of the angel with another name soon and I can have her back.
