There are a few things in the deck such as Alpha Authority, Trailblazer's Boots, and Silent Arbiter that reduce the amount of blockers against Wilson, Refined Grizzly to ensure combat damage goes through. I can see how Nemesis Mask + Deathtouch = Boardwipes, but I want to do more playtesting with the little-to-no-blocker cards first before I add Nemesis Mask.

When I read Quietus Spike to my GF, she said that it was nuts lol. I'll find a spot for it right now.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Legendary beatdown? It should be easy to get her out on turn three for a turn 4 attack. Load up on cheap legends like Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse, Syr Faren, the Hengehammer, maybe Wilson, Refined Grizzly, and you have the start of a stompy deck.

Blackblade Reforged feels like a natural fit, too.

You could also ramp into bigger legendary creatures like Old Gnawbone or The Tarrasque and go for a big creature beatdown. Add some protection like Wrap in Vigor, Heroic Intervention, or Asceticism, depending on budget, and there's a deck.

I would say those are Doric's clearest strengths, ramping and face smashing, with a side of lands matter. I can't come up with anything too tricky or subtle to do with her as the centerpiece, so my suggestion is to dig into the aggro and swing hard.

Abaques on Alternative themes/gimmick EDH deck ideas

There are a ton of interesting combinations to be had with the backgrounds from Battle for Baldur's Gate. Only a relative handful of the combinations have lots of decks so there is room to really explore and create something that is you. All the commanders are really cheap too.

I have two decks with backgrounds, both are not something I've seen anywhere else.

One of my favorite decks to play is my Wilson, Refined Grizzly and Shameless Charlatan deck, Tinker Tailor Soldier Bear where the theme is Wilson is a spy. I put a lot of +1/+1 and ability counters on Wilson and have him copy the best thing on the board. There were a couple of cards that were kind of pricey in the deck list, but only two (Training Grounds and The Ozolith) are really vital to the deck and even then I could cut those if I had to. The ability that Shameless Charlatan gives to Wilson kind of ends up being a combat trick, which is really kind of fun because you don't tend to see a lot of combat tricks in EDH.

The other deck with backgrounds is one that I just built with Lulu, Loyal Hollyphant and Guild Artisan. It's a boros treasure deck that uses the treasures from Guild Artisans to trigger Lulu's ability to untap and add a +1/+1 counter to tapped creatures. Aside from the treasure focused cards, I've filled the deck with cards that have a tap ability or are evasive attackers. I just built it last weekend and I'm hoping to try it out next week at the weekly commander night at my LGS, so I don't know how well it plays yet, but I'm optimistic. I kind of expect that I'll need to tweak it somewhat, but I think I'll need to play it a few times to know how. Happy to get any advice anyone would have as well (Prosperous Pachyderm).

Abaques on How Many EDH Decks Do …

The first step in beating an addiction is admitting that you have a problem. I have a problem.

I have 60 EDH decks in paper that are all double-sleeved and in boulders plus two of the W40k pre-cons that I'll probably disassemble sooner or later. All but two are fully up to date on TappedOut. I rotate through playing and updating them fairly slowly. It's way too many I know, but I love deck building and I really hate to pull apart a deck that I've already built. I only have a handful of decks that are at a higher power level. Most of my decks are pretty casual.

This past year I did force myself to set a limit of 60 decks that I'll maintain. I won't go beyond that with decks that I build. I don't rule out buying a pre-con and sleeving it up to play for a few weeks.

Currently my favorite deck to play is my Tinker Tailor Soldier Bear deck based around Wilson, Refined Grizzly being a spy. It's pretty budget but I'm considering upgrading the card advantage and mana base.

Abaques on Background pairings

I'm in the process of brewing a deck with Wilson, Refined Grizzly and Shameless Charlatan with the idea of turning Wilson into a copy of whatever is the best creature on the battlefield. Wilson's cheap to cast and has some baked in protection and nice abilities in case there's nothing great to copy. I'll be putting a bunch of +1/+1 and ability counters on Wilson. Kind of a build my own voltron.

I also built a background tribal deck with Tana, the Bloodsower and Tymna the Weaver at the helm called You Came From Where?. Its pretty low budget (I just bought some cards to slightly improve the mana base) but it can be surprisingly powerful. Its not surprising, but Noble Heritage and Raised by Giants are really, really good with Tana and Tymna. I've made tons of saprolings and gained a whole lot of life very quickly. Basically partner commanders are very strong with backgrounds.

Overall I really like what they did with them. They meet the need that Battle for Baldur's Gate had for the draft environment without really breaking things like the partner mechanic kind of has.

What I mean is Wilson, Refined Grizzly has trample, so if I assign 10 damage to one of the three 1/1 creatures does my opponent still take 9?
