Grim Feast

Enchantment

At the beginning of your upkeep, Grim Feast deals 1 damage to you.

Whenever a creature is put into an opponent's graveyard from play, you gain life equal to its toughness.

DemonDragonJ on Grim Feaster and Orzhov Pallbearers

I find both Grim Feast and Proper Burial to be fascinating cards, but they both are rather underpowered in that they cannot do anything on their own (especially since the latter costs 4 mana to cast), so I have created creature versions of each of them, as seen, here.

Grim Feaster Show

For a mere 1 mana more over Grim Feast, this card is a 3/3 creature, and it made sense, to me, for it to be a zombie. This card likely could have been mono-black, as neither of its effects are particularly green, but the original card was black/green, so I made this card those colors, as well. I contemplated giving this creature deathtouch, to trigger its second ability more easily, but I decided that that would make it too powerful, so I did not give it such an ability.

Orzhov Pallbearers Show

I gave this creature vigilance because pallbearers are supposed to be watchful and careful as they carry the casket of the deceased to their grave, and I initially did not wish to give it a name that associated it with a specific faction, but I could not think of a better name, and the artwork of Proper Burial, the card that inspired this one, clearly depicts members of the Orzhov guild, so I decided that that was acceptable, in this case.

What does everyone here think about these creatures? How well did I do, with them?

I feel like you could also look into running a lot of wipes, stax or other salt inducing things, such that the deck will naturally end up the archenemy and everyone will unite against them. Do the other decks compete with one another? If so, something that does Goad or Goad-like effects would be cool. TBH, if I had to pick a commander to try out as an Archenemy type deck, I'd be very tempted to go with Kresh the Bloodbraided. 5 mana for a 3/3 isn't very spicy, but he quickly can get very, very out of hand, it's not unusual for you to do something like Mandate of Abaddon or Phyrexian Scriptures and then one shot people one at a time with your gigantic Kresh. Lots of cards synergize with Kresh, ranging from Grim Feast and anything that works with/is Rite of the Raging Storm. Big Goad effects like Disrupt Decorum and Spectacular Showdown also add a nasty surprise, and Insurrection is a great turn-around-is-fair-play type effect for an Archenemy. You can even make the deck on the cheap using stuff like Fleshbag Marauder (there are a bajillion at this point, especially if you'll pay 4 for a 4 power one), these generate a lot of power if you also have Savra, Queen of the Golgari (or something similar) out. Pestilence and similar effects are very good in here, they let you both clear out weenie blockers while also pumping Kresh ever bigger by winnowing away the chaff. Kresh will quickly crush everyone, you just need to add fun stuff like evasion or trample to make his immense power count. If you build this right it should be quite scary to play against, and the odd Fling can be a nice way to punish the players for killing Kresh.

Another great option might be Sauron, the Dark Lord, the more the party does the bigger the 'threat' gets, and it's almost impossible to remove Sauron. It's easy to sneak in some powerful Changelings to work as a better base army, but the whole 'orc army' thing is in and of itself very stereotypical in D&D. I like Grixis because you get Blue, meaning you have access to the odd counter. In particular I'd look into stuff like Stronghold Machinist, effect-on-a-stick creatures are good for an Archenemy because they tend to soak up the opponent's cards, even something like Royal Assassin is card advantage over time. Since the Army can get pretty big you can use Voltron stuff with it, and if you use Anthems (Berserkers' Onslaught, Dauthi Embrace, and Whip of Erebos come to mind) they'll work on both the Army and Sauron, which is cool Big Bad energy for the deck.

Gidgetimer on Interaction between Dina, Soul Steeper …

Grim Feast is a triggered ability, so it has to go on the stack and wait to resolve. Dina, Soul Steeper will not be on the battlefield to trigger by the time you gain the life.

Similarly, I have Dina, Soul Steeper, Grim Feast and Exquisite Blood in play, and someone destroys Dina... would the triggers go infinite and kill my opponents, or will Dina go to the grave and only trigger once for each dying creature?

I have Grim Feast and Dina, Soul Steeper in play and someone casts a creature wipe, destroying all creatures... Grim Feast doesn't say "dies", but states specifically that a creature has to go to the graveyard, so will Dina see the life gain from Grim Feast and deal out life loss? Or will she be gone by the time Grim Feast triggers? Thanks in advance!

carpecanum thanks for the feedback, Cloudstone Curio is great but definitely out of my price range for the deck, Grim Feast seems like perfect flavour and the life gain is pretty relevant, if I can find a copy it is a strong contender. Unnatural Hunger is flavourful but very minimal utility for its cost.

If you already own a Cloudstone Curio you can bounce and play your one drops for a bunch of food every turn.

Grim Feast for flavor. Maybe Unnatural Hunger .

Love the theme. Grim Feast ! Unnatural Hunger ! A Mimic Vat could give you at least one food per turn and a potentially awesome creature. If that creature gives you a token creature when it enters or leaves you double up on food.
