Oh yes I've been feeling that On Thin Ice is a bit redundant here because of the Paths and the adventure from Brazen Borrower. I didn't think about things like Engineered Explosives or Ratchet Bomb and they are surely a threat to be addressed. Pithing Needle not only handles those but many other troublesome cards too. I have a couple of copies on other decks and this one should definitely benefit from them. Thank you!

Hey I took another look at your deck and I'm more looking at your sideboard. I'd advise taking out On Thin Ice as you already are running a playset of Path To Exiles and I'd add Pithing Needle instead. The main reason is your deck is extremely vulnerable to Engineered Explosives which a sideboarded Pithing Needle can easily stop. Hope this helps.

The various bombs (like Engineered Explosives) start off immediately not hitting your tokens, so those could be fun too. Who doesn’t like a good kitchen bomb. Do you know what they call a bomb in a French kitchen? Linoleum Blownapart. Sorry everybody.

Also, very recommend an Engineered Explosives in Karn's toolbox. I've heard some say Karn's Sylex is better for Karn than EE. I'm on the fence as to this. Turnning off fetchlands is always funny, but it really comes down to how much you need your Chalices to stick around.

Andromedus on Anointed Peacekeeper + Aether Vial

My opponent casts a spell, putting it on the stack. In response, I flash in an Anointed Peacekeeper using Aether Vial, naming the spell he put on the stack.

Does this essentially work like a beefed up Mana Tithe?

Same question again, except with an ability. Let's say my opponent activates Engineered Explosives, putting its ability on the stack. Same as before I flash in an Anointed Peacekeeper using Aether Vial and naming the Engineered Explosives.

In both cases it's not clear to me what happens, whether the opponent has the option of tapping more mana (or even needs to), whether the EE sac effect goes through (even if the ability fizzles?) and so on.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Andromedus on Anointed Peacekeeper names Engineered Explosives

I want to make sure I understand how this interaction works.

I play an Anointed Peacekeeper and name Engineered Explosives.

After that, my opponent casts Engineered Explosives on their turn, intending to set the number of charge counters to 1.

Am I correct that in order to do this, he will need to tap only 2 total mana (to pay the Peacekeeper tax) being careful that those two mana are either the same color, or one of them is colorless? Meaning he can pay zero for Engineered Explosives' baseline cost as if he were casting it for 0, and then account for the 2 colorless, which then brings the charge counters up to one?

Or does he need to pay for the single charge counter with a mana, and then pay two additional mana? And if so does the color of the two additional mana matter?

Secondly, if I had two Anointed Peacekeepers both with Engineered Explosivess named, would he would need to have some combination of mono-color mana plus colorless adding up to 4 total in order to cast it with 1 charge counter? Or again, would he need to account for the initial 1 mana first, and then add the 4 "colorless" after that?

wallisface, Icbrgr: Sorry, I misunderstood the question. The question I answered was "can Prismatic Ending and Engineered Explosives blow up a chalice" not "can Minor Misstep counter Prismatic Ending or Engineered Explosives"

Yeah Gidgetimer, you're incorrect here. The MV of a spell with X in its value takes the value of X into account when they're on the stack, so the MV of Prismatic Ending, Engineered Explosives, and Chalice of the Void will always take the X into account while on the stack - and so often Minor Misstep will not be able to target them (just to add further, Prismatic Ending can NEVER have MV 0 because it has a required white-pip in its casting cost).

Icbrgr I think the problem is that the card is competing early-game with Spell Pierce, and then late game with Counterspell and Archmage's Charm... there's just such a narrow application for the spell that it feels iffy to be running mainboard. Saying that, I do think it could see some play in limited number mainboard (1-2 copies at most), and possibly some sideboard play also. I just feel there are too many other solid control cards that Minor Misstep might not have too narrow an application to be the optimal choice in almost all decks.

One thing that could be interesting is pairing Minor Misstep with Spell Snare. While neither are optimal in terms of countermagic, they might allow for some aggressive tempo-based control where mana is tight (i'm thinking the Monastery Mentor decks that a lot of people have been toying with since seeing AspiringSpike brewing in that vein, though something like Sultai-Shadow might also be interested in this approach).
