Should i splash blue in my burn deck?

Deck Help forum

Need some help deciding if splashing blue would help speed up my (mono-red) deck or slow it down with land complications and such or just not be worth it at all.

Link: Burn, Bitch

Why would you ever want to run blue in a Burn deck? Only think I would ever consider blue in a RDW/Burn list would be Snapcaster Mage .

aeonstoremyliver: Even Snapcaster Mage would slow down a burn deck too much, imo. :/

Why play him when you could play Eidolon of the Great Revel instead?

Because i have 4 Goblin Electromancer laying around that i'd like to use :P

and the deck's Avg. CMC is 3.14..

The mana curve is way too high. Cut four, five and six drops so that you can play fewer lands and fit in more cheap burn spells. That makes your mana much more smooth and efficient, and takes away the need for Goblin Electromancer . Eidolon of the Great Revel is your Goblin Electromancer (at least he should be), and does the job much better.

But.. Fire Servant and Hostility are what made me want to make this deck.

and i completely fail to see how Eidolon of the Great Revel would help me when i'm the one playing a bunch of spells costing 3 mana or less..

I'm going to assume you want this deck to be competitive. If not, ignore everything I say and splash blue for Goblin Electromancer and the laughs.

Fire Servant and Hostility are too slow to be in a deck that should be winning the turn you would usually cast them. Since Burn doesn't have a long-game strength, it needs to be as fast as possible or risk getting demolished when the game goes to later turns. You want to play lots of cheap spells to maximize this.

Eidolon of the Great Revel is amazing in a turn 4 format. Most spells will cost fewer than four mana, and your opponent's have to take damage from your spells, their lands, and their own spells, making it hard to stay alive. let alone win. As the burn player, you give exactly zero shits about your own life total. You can end the game at one life, and if you opponent is dead that will be perfectly fine.

thispersonisagenius small correction, lands do not count as spells, and therefore do not set the eidolon off. If that was how it worked, eidolon would be banned in Modern :P

Their lands means their Misty Rainforest s and Steam Vents .

thispersonisagenius: Ah, okay, that makes sense. I was confused by the wording there.

Oh, that makessig sense, thank you.

But shit i forgot to mention, and honestly didn't even really think about it until now, that i usually play free-for-all in a group with at least 4 players, and i can't really run decks like that, ignoring my own health. i have to preserve my health and eliminate threats while taking on at least three opponents.

That's fine then. Play Goblin Electromancer , but make sure you can reliably cast it. Shivan Reef , Steam Vents , Sulfur Falls are your best friends.

Basic Island is OK too I guess.

thispersonisagenius, you forgot the Mountain , nub >:P

In all seriousness, why not do a split burn/counter deck with Runechanter's Pike + Spellheart Chimera as finishers?

If i only have 4 blue mana costs, is 8 blue mana sources too much, too little, or what?

Go Izzet tempo with Spellheart Chimera , Riverfall Mimic and Clout of the Dominus . Always so much fun~

@slovakattack I feel that Burn should actually play Forest s and Manamorphose s.

You can never go wrong with too many sources of your splash color, so long as you get both consistently. 8 sources is fine, and I'd make them Steam Vents and Sulfur Falls for maximal consistency.

Also, one question: why does everyone call a UR deck with lots of cheap spells a tempo deck? Maybe I need an explanation of the word tempo, but to me it seems everyone just calls their deck with a bunch of random cheap blue cards a tempo deck.

i have no idea about the tempo thing :P

Femme_Fatale says... #19

Going tempo means relying on a certain type of creature thispersonisagenius. These are the kinds of creatures that benefit from playing spells. The best known two are Young Pyromancer (even if I don't like him too much) and Delver of Secrets  Flip . The newest one that is seeing a lot of play recently is Keranos, God of Storms . Beyond that, any creature that benefits from controlling your opponent's board is a tempo creature, as the purpose for tempo is to generate more advantage for your cheap spells. Spellheart Chimera and Riverfall Mimic are quite specific and more expensive to play so they are not usually hailed as powerful tempo cards.

Never if you have the room to put more cards in always throw in more burn spells. If you run out of burn spells then throw in more fetch lands.
