Riverfall Mimic

Creature — Shapeshifter

Whenever you cast a spell that's both blue and red, Riverfall Mimic becomes 3/3 and is unblockable until end of turn.

One question, two conflicting answers? * with epic voice * There can be only one! (It sounded funnier in my head, I swear)

All jokes aside I do believe that Neotrup is correct on this one based on the following:

112.1a An ability can be a characteristic an object has that lets it affect the game. An object’s abilities are defined by its rules text or by the effect that created it. Abilities can also be granted to objects by rules or effects. (Effects that grant abilities usually use the words “has,” “have,” “gains,” or “gain.”) Abilities generate effects. (See rule 609, “Effects.”)

Riverfall Mimic doesn't use any of those words so therefore his "unblockable until end of turn" is not an added ability but rather modification of game rules.

613.10. Some continuous effects affect game rules rather than objects. For example, effects may modify a player’s maximum hand size, or say that a creature must attack this turn if able. These effects are applied after all other continuous effects have been applied. Continuous effects that affect the costs of spells or abilities are applied according to the order specified in rule 601.2f. All other such effects are applied in timestamp order. See also the rules for timestamp order and dependency (rules 613.6 and 613.7).

All in all in your case Riverfall Mimic will end up as 4/4 red and blue unblockable dragon with flying.

Riverfall Mimic's ability makes it so it can't be blocked this turn, which is a modification of game rules, so even when it loses all abilities, that statement will still be true. The net effect will be that the mimic is a 4/4 with flying that can't be blocked.

Riverfall Mimic's oracle text reads "Whenever you cast a spell that's both blue and red," so its ability will trigger when you cast Dragonshift. The ability will go on the stack above Dragonshift and resolve first, turning the Mimic into a 3/3 unblockable creature. Dragonshift will then resolve, turning the mimic into a 4/4 dragon that is no longer unblockable (due to the "loses all abilities" portion of the spell). You also won't be able to re-trigger the mimic's ability, as that will also be gone until end of turn.

i see what your saying with your explanation Xica and can get behind the "Devotion" clause... only its not really permanent based to wake up something like Keranos, God of Storms but more so just a "cast-devotion" requirement for Riverfall Mimic/Shrewd Hatchling..... i think it makes sense to deem it "Devotion".... same with prison because i dont really tap out their resources/mana but more so try to make them a lot harder to use to slow them down/lock them out altogether with mana transormation... the deck generally win with tempo, and often trade card advantage to gain it... so i think that works too.... like a Tempo/Prison/Devotion?

in regards to Gigadrowse... i dont see anything wrong with it TBH... would probably be viable to replace Teleportal with. Ill playtest it; seems like it could be an upgrade thanks!

@xyr0s yeah there is a lot of investment to make Crackleburr go off but so satisfying when it does. 9/10 times he is just a trigger for Riverfall Mimic/Shrewd Hatchling... If I put more land in here that's probably where id start.... I'll definitely consider reducing some other spells for Serum Visions...Clout of the Dominus does seem nonbo with some of the instant/scorcery spells in here but the shroud doesn't interfere too badly, often just target another creature or have Nivmagus Elemental eat it.

@antacidbrn yeah I hear you about Nivmagus Elemental... Sometimes he works awesome and other times not so much but he is my personal favorite option of the one-drops currently available... Lightning Bolt has been right there with Serum Visions for me because I know I need them but haven't quite found a spot for them...the struggle of building a 60 card deck.

Yea that trigger with Riverfall Mimic is great but i assumed (i could be wrong with this) that between 18 creatures and 4 Clout of the Dominus you could pretty easily still get the trigger.

I did realize that counter spells might not be in you best interest because they dont interact with Nivmagus Elemental very well

Thanks SeekerofSecrets. I think I get what you mean/are getting at with the spell list... Using more common/effective spells may actually make the list more competitive overall rather than putting as much focus as I have on getting a trigger every single play... Especially after play testing as much as I have I've noticed that it's more important/preferable to get those triggers at scorcery speed/precombat phase for Riverfall Mimic.... I'll toy with the spell list and consider mana upgrades.
