The upcoming legendary walkers rule change

I was just looking to see what things could be done when walkers become legendary. For the uninformed once ixalan drops planeswalkers will retroactively become legendary and the walker uniqueness rule will go away.

The cards this effects that I could find are Mirror Gallery, Yomiji, Who Bars the Way , Captain Sisay, Empress Galina, Honor-Worn Shaku, Minamo, School at Water's Edge, Reki, the History of Kamigawa, Thalia's Lancers, and Untaidake, the Cloud Keeper

This will be a major power boost I think to decks with those legends. The honor worn shaku is cool, free mana since I have never seen a use in tapping walkers before without getting really weird.

Yomiji, Who Bars the Way + Gideon of the Trials + something else or multiple something else... I'm sure there is potential here.

Anyone else got some gears turning because of this change?

I am excited to use my Empress Galina to steal planeswalkers right before they would ult.

Is the change speculation or confirmed?

CChaos spoilers in the article but the last part of it reveals a walker and talks about the change.

Maybe some Champion's Helm for the Gideons, when they're in Human Soldier mode?

Yomiji, Who Bars the Way + Gideon, Ally of Zendikar = +1/+1 permanently to all your creatures for each multiple of 2WW you have

Walker uniqueness will go away? Meaning you could have 3 different chandras out at once?

August 29, 2017 7:09 p.m.

clayperce says... #8

maxon,
Yep. It goes into effect when Ixalan releases.

August 29, 2017 7:19 p.m.

kanokarob says... #9

Correct. The "Planeswalker rule" will be no more, and planeswalkers will be bound only by the "legend rule" as it applies to every other card type.

That article doesn't a very good job of explaining why this change is happening. Anyone know what the point is?

August 29, 2017 7:32 p.m.

DuTogira says... #11

It's because of new jace. With the "uniqueness rule", his ult would just create clones that kill each other. This is literally a change based on a new jace walker.

August 29, 2017 7:44 p.m.

maxon says... #12

I really hope they didn't change the rules just to push a crappy new jace through

August 29, 2017 7:47 p.m.

DrukenReaps says... #13

changes like this are usually for rules simplicity. It also widens walker support and ways to deal with them without needing to print new cards. So yes it allows the new jace but that is a drop in the bucket next to all the other things this change does.

This is of course my speculation on why.

Really it should have been this way to begin with, having 2 rules for different key words that say almost the same thing is silly...

August 29, 2017 7:59 p.m.

DuTogira says... #14

While I'll agree that this does make for greater simplicity and is the way things should have always been, I'll maintain that new jace was the conduit that finally pushed this change through. This change directly affects his playability and involvement in an infinite combo, a change without which would make his ult useless.
Yes it's a good thing, but if it weren't for jace, I doubt this change would have happened.

My friend doesn't like the new Jace.

Any reason for this change only serves to make planeswalkers more powerful unnecessarily. Being legendary, as has been made evident by the suggestions in this thread, just makes them more useful, and therefore abusable, to a larger range of cards. Not least of which, of course, is the notorious Captain Sisay.

Ill retain that my Superfriends edh is not complaining. But objectively, this change is a massive buff to planeswalkers, and a loss of flavor.

August 29, 2017 9:52 p.m.

DuTogira says... #17

A loss of flavor perhaps, but a loss of flavor consistent with the legendary rule (eg, why can I have all three versions of Avacyn in play at once?)
Besides this, I don't mind walkers getting a buff. Sure there are individual walkers which are very powerful, but -other than dodging most forms of removal- they have never been powerful simply because they were walkers. Rather, a walker's power is always entirely based around what it can do, and therefore power level varies from card to card to a more extreme level than with any other card type.
Make 'em fetchable. Superfriends isn't a T1 deck in cEDH yet anyway, and nothing other than Gideon tribal is going to crop up in any other format because of this rules change.

I'm really interested in what combos you can do with Mirror Gallery + Clever Impersonator and planswalker in edh that hasn't been done yet

don't forget "destroy legends" -- Tsabo Tavoc became more usefull

I also was swinging some low CMC black "destroy legend" spell (due to budget removal) - that just got a raise in potential

pskinn01 says... #21

Most older cards that say do something to a target legend, has been changed to target legendary creature. Including Tsabo.

Okay, but let's be real. Why the hell is Jace a pirate? I'm going to throw my head into a wall if I see one more "Oath of Gatewatch" planeswalker being printed. I wanna see some creativity for once. If I end up drawing that lame-ass planeswalker I'm going to feed it to my pet rock.

August 29, 2017 11:43 p.m.

enpc says... #25

Zakass: Jace is the flagship character for MtG and is supposed to be the kind of character that the "typical magic player" relates to. I mean even the new type-font for the cards is called "Beleren". Apparently WotC refuses to see that most people can't stand Jace or more importantly the kind of poeple who idolize him.

But the important question is, if I can play more than one Jace then who is the smartest person in the room?

August 30, 2017 2:17 a.m.

CChaos says... #26

Jace is like a child who cries because he didnt get the toy he wanted, only difference is this child has psychic abilities.

Unlike the other walkers Jace seems to be defined a lot by his powers alone. Without it it seems he would be a terrible character. However I have yet to read his origin story to understand him better.

August 30, 2017 6:45 a.m. Edited.

kanokarob says... #27

WotC and Maro maintain and have always maintained that Jace is popular. The people who dislike him are just more vocal. And I'd be inclined to believe that they aren't making that up, because if he was actually unpopular to the majority, they'd drop him. Like Masterpieces.

Anyway, he's a "pirate" because he lost most/all of his mind/memories again during his attempted mental intrusion of Nicol Bolas, and was forced to planeswalk away without focus, landing on Ixalan by chance. He's a castaway, probably picked up by a group of pirates and just going with the flow because he knows nothing else right now. He may even find himself working with Vraska, if he doesn't remember her.

August 30, 2017 7:25 a.m.

DrukenReaps says... #28

kanokarob him and vraska together... that would be awesomely funny. Maybe get liliana jealous too lol.

ZOMG, has anyone noticed the price of Untaidake, the Cloud Keeper?
It was ~$0.40, but now it's ~$12.00 (for NM) or higher.

Untaidake on MTGstocks
Untaidake on TCGplayer

kanokarob says... #30

I was gonna add Untaidake to my Superfriends. But even with this new rule change, 2 life for CC on a land, for legendary or not, is not worth almost $20.

Also, we're all living in 2017 while clayperce is in 2004 with ZOMG.
