FNM Results —May 25, 2013

Went 3-1 at FNM.

0-2 vs Nightshade Peddler + Izzet Staticaster combo deck. Used Ral Zarek to un-tap Staticaster and ping all of my creatures and Jace, Architect of Thought to slow down my aggro. Sided in Pithing Needle for Ral Zarek and the Izzet Staticaster, but wasn't able to pull any in time. Not sure if there was anything else I would have done differently against this deck.

2-0 vs Esper control. First game was over by turn 5 without any sort of removal being pulled. Since I've played against this person before, I sided in Pithing Needle and Rootborn Defenses to counter Nephalia Drownyard and Supreme Verdict. 2nd game was a little slower, but Cloudfin Raptor with Rancor + Geist of Saint Traft was able to beat him down. Prevented the Supreme Verdict by using Rootborn Defenses and swung for win while he was tapped out and couldn't use Sphinx's Revelation.

2-0 vs B/R Vampires. Both very quick games. My opponent had gotten out 3 Bloodline Keeper  Flip within 6 turns, each one of which he used to block Geist of Saint Traft when I attacked. I kept the Geist alive by pumping him with Simic Charm.

2-0 vs G/W/R Ramp/Tokens. This was a friend's deck which gets very scary in the midgame. Any combination of Master Biomancer, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Trostani, Selesnya's Voice, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight or Armada Wurm would have ended me very quickly. Thankfully, I was able to get Geist of Saint Traft by turn 3 both games and then used Zameck Guildmage ability to pump up the angel coming out before any big threats came out.

Very happy with how the deck modifications have been going. The aggro is still quick and the extra utility makes it very resilient.

I'm not a fan of Unflinching Courage in this deck. The best target for it is traft and even then it feels like it should be that other enchantment with flying (it's late as I'm on my phone so I apologize for not looking it up). The Rancor should be a 4 of and I'm not sure how you feel about him, but in my own experience, the guildmage is kind of... Underwhelming. I wouldn't say take him out completely but I don't feel he should be a 4 of.

Firstly, cheers for the feedback. :)

I might make Rancor 4 and Unflinching Courage 3. Its still a useful enchant to chuck on Master Biomancer (so that all subsequent creatures come out bigger). I assume the other enchant you mention would be Gift of Orzhova ?If so, it's definitely a good enchant, but I don't feel I have enough white in the mana base to get it out consistently enough.

Zameck Guildmage could be changed, but the ability to remove counters and get extra draw when i need (especially useful on the undying creatures since i can keep doing it with enough mana) has saved me a lot of times. Could use 3 guild mages instead and add 1 to something else, though I'm not sure what.

Hmm, It fits the curve and gives me some good benefits. I'll see how I go with this deck at FNM tonight with the Unflinching Courage in there. If the Trample/Lifelink doesn't turn out to be good enough, I'll probably switch to Spectral flight.
