First, a bit of my story. I started playing Magic at the Theros pre-release. The first card I really wanted to try to break was Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. My first Modern deck was a Mono green ramp deck that cast Primalcrux using creatures that cost / / as Nyx-food.

Which brings me to this deck. It is very easy to play, super fun to see 'go off' and doesn't take forever when it does. There is no silly 'tap this, untap that, tap this, untap that', just count your devotion, tap Nykthos, and cast your game ending spell. Oh yea, you also get to beat down with stupidly massive creatures, and can win on the backs of your 3-drops without ever casting the really big spells. How do you think your opponent will react to a turn 2 Leatherback Baloth ? They normally end up asking to see the deck after the match.

We all know Genesis Wave is nuts -- there is an entire archetype built around it and nykthos. But what about Primal Surge? It just might be the closest thing to "i play the rest of my deck this turn." In many cases, decks like this win because you can wave into a Craterhoof Behemoth. In order to do that, you need to cast Genesis Wave for 11. That's not really hard to do you probably say. So why not just cast Primal Surge for 10 and be done with it? I am loving having both options in my deck, especially with things like Surgical Extraction really hurting a deck that only runs one or the other.

With that in mind, Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you "Primal Genesis". Ramp, cast, win. Simple.

Example Goldfish

Opening hand: Forest, Forest, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Abundant Growth , Utopia Sprawl, Arbor Elf, Leatherback Baloth , Garruk Wildspeaker.

Turn 1: Draw Carven Caryatid . Play Forest, Arbor Elf.

Turn 2: Draw Abundant Growth . Play Forest, Utopia Sprawl. Tap enchanted forest for , untap with arbor elf, tap again for , play Garruk Wildspeaker. Tap forest for , untap two lands with Garruk, tap both forests for another for 4 total mana. Play Carven Caryatid , draw Utopia Sprawl. Play Abundant Growth , draw Primal Surge.

Turn 3: Draw Primalcrux. Play Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, tap forest for , play Utopia Sprawl onto already enchanted forest so that it can tap for . Tap arbor elf to make a total of . Play Primalcrux, use 2 floating mana to activate Nykthos for 13 mana. Play Leatherback Baloth , play Primal Surge. Start playing your entire deck.

I shuffled the deck at this point and started exiling and putting cards into play. Here is what the board looked like when I finally hit a non-permanent. (there are only 3 cards in the remaining 49 that would stop the cycle).

I did not hit a Craterhoof Behemoth but I did land another Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. I drew an additional 4 cards via 3x Carven Caryatid and an Abundant Growth . I picked the Primal Surge back up from the graveyard due to Eternal Witness.

I now have to choose which Garruk Wildspeaker and which Nykthos to keep, and will keep the ones which have not been activated.

Still turn 3 mind you...

Tap some untapped forests to play the Voyaging Satyr and Abundant Growth , drawing a Forest.

I can now recast Primal Surge without even using Nykthos, due to Garruks +1, but choose the quick route and tap two newly surged forests and Nykthos for 47!!!

Long story short, a few cards later my board looked like this:

Quick calculations show that I was going to swing for...

Craterhoof gives everything +21/21, haste and trample.

Primalcrux's are both 55/55's due to the devotion.

Arbor Elf 1/1 + 21/21 = 22 x 3 = 66

Primalcrux 55/55 + 21/21 = 76 x 2 = 152

Leatherback Baloth 4/5 + 21/21 = 25 x 4 = 100

Eternal Witness 2/1 + 21/21 = 23 x 4 = 92

Voyaging Satyr 1/2 + 21/21 = 22 x 4 = 88

Craterhoof Behemoth 5/5 + 21/21 = 26

4x Carven Caryatid s don't attack. :p

So thats 524 trample damage on turn 3 by my estimation. We just killed our opponent dead 26 times over. Not that it matters... most opponents scoop after they see what I'm doing with Primal Surge.

But what happens if you don't get a nut draw?

This is a non-abundant growth draw, turn 3

This board can swing for 40 trample by ultimating Garruk the next turn. Have fun stopping that on turn 4.
