Modern Event and Deck Changes —July 30, 2014

This past Saturday I played in a modern event with this deck. It was the first time for this deck to be played in an event. There were three rounds. I ended up 1-2. The first deck I played was an all or nothing R/W burn deck. IMO, the bane of my deck. With all of the burn spells being thrown at my face plus the life loss some of my spells have, my life total went away way too fast. That round went 1-2. The second round I played against a mono black discard deck using Waste Not and Shrieking Affliction. The guy used a lot of discard spells and I wasn't able to keep up. That round also went 1-2. The last round I played against a mono green elf deck that tried to get early mana excel to play Craterhoof and trample through. It also had a play set of Revenge of the Hunted. In this match up, my opponent wasn't able to stabilize due I the fact I was removing everything on his field. This round I went 2-0.

After some challenging matches, I decided I change things up a bit. I found that my lack of winning was because my creatures were not infecting fast enough. So I thought to myself "what kind of creature buffs are there in black?" After some research, I came up empty handed. Just then, I had a great idea. Mutagenic Growth! So what if I don't play green. What's more Phyrexian than paying life to play a spell? And what a great spell to buff my creatures. I would gladly pay 2 life to give a creature +2/+2! Especially if it's going to win me the game. Then a fellow TO Deckling suggested Cathedral of War. To that I said hell yes! I have a low creature count and I'm usually only attacking with one at a time. Perfect land for this deck. It makes my Inkmoths 2/2 which allows me to use Funeral Charm to buff. Otherwise Charm would just kill an Inkmoth. I only play one because it's slow and only taps for colourless.

Nice deck, Dark Confidant would help you a lot, if you can get your hands on some.

I would also up your Devour Flesh count. It's so strong in an infect deck, with lots of other removal. You can even sack your own creatures for life in a pinch.

Thanks The_Squirrel! I don't think Dark Confidant is a must have for this deck. As for Devour Flesh, I'm going to do some play testing this weekend to see how well my removal spells do. If I find that Smother or Dismember are inaffective, they will get cut for more Devour Flesh. Thanks for the up vote!

I like how this deck is shaped up. Lilly makes such a huge difference :)

Hey APPLE01DOJ! Thanks man. Yeah, Lilly is great. I just got a play set yesterday ($190 btw). I haven't done too much play testing as of yet. This weekend I will get a chance to do some serious testing. I don't think I need to run 4 Lilly's. I used the fourth slot for a Phyrexian Arena to help with the card advantage.

I can appreciate if you think you've spent enough money on this deck already, but seriously, in this kind of deck, Dark Confidant is far better than Phyrexian Arena . I agree, Arena has its uses. (I took over confidant anyday in the early stages of my deck ProgEmrakul, the Opponents Ragequit before I learned about Explore .) But that was because I have Emrakuls in there, so I wasn't willing to take 15 damage from a topdeck...

In this case, Dark Confidant is better due to a lower mana cost, the ability to attack and protect your Lilianas. Furthermore, the majority of your curve is really low, so Confidant will rarely do huge damage to you.

If you won't take this advice, switch Night's Whisper for Sign in Blood . It's strictly better on the grounds that you can kill the opponent with it, while Whisper can only target you. Sign is Whisper, but it can also be a finisher, not just a card advantage creator.

Sign in Blood is useless for an infect deck simply because my opponents life total does not apply. Also, if you notice Emrakul-the-Format-Broken, I run a colourless land, Inkmoth Nexus. I like to play Inkmoth on turn 2 if in hand. With that said, I like to run 2 cmc cards with 1B as opposed to BB. This is what makes Night's Whisper a great card in this deck. As for Dark Confidant, he is not a must have in this deck, regardless of the price. Phyrexian Arena works just fine. Thanks for the suggestions.

I think I commented before comments were cleared, but in case I didn't, great deck! I recently constructed a similar modern deck, minus the Lillys, which are a little out of my price range for the time being. Aside from Lilly, do you have any suggestions? I haven't had the chance to run the deck competitively yet. Mono Black Discard and Infect

Geth's Verdict over devour flesh?

July 24, 2014 5:31 p.m.

Hey avrgeboy123. Thanks for the suggestion. If you took the time to read my discription, you'd understand why I use Devour Flesh over Geth's Verdict.

Sign in Blood could be better than Night's Whisper because it targets anyone. What if they have 2 or less life? BAM, draw two cards and lose two life please! xD

Lol, acutally... Scratch that. You're using Infect! xD Only poison counters, not damage.

Is 8 creatures enough?

Some possibilities:

Ichorclaw Myr

Necropede

Plague Stinger

Thanks for the suggestions Nightside_Eclipse. I'm starting to think eight creatures is not enough. Plague Stinger looks the best out of the three you mentioned.

Maybe even another Skittles?

I would suggest at least taking out the Phyrexian Arena for another creature, one just doesn't cut it.

Love the deck +1 I use a very similar deck at my LGS and always get top 1-8 my differences are Victim of Night over Smother No SKITTLES ( vatmother #4) I often get stuck on 3-4 lands I also do not use Lilly as she is really just win more lol but she is good I prefer 27 spells for pike opposed to 24 Blackmail is really good and doesn't hurt like Thoughtseize but that is a matter of preference i guess.and about your milera-pod match up that is a match that I believe favors Infect hardest match for me is always jund. A card i have been testing is a 1of Cathedral of War the exalted trigger is very helpful for inkmoth nexus especialy if you want to give it +2 with Funeral Charm now it swings 4/1 flying infect or makes vatmother a 2 swing win. anyway good luck with the deck

Have you thought about Waste Not and Dark Ritual ? It can make for a nasty turn one. or even a turn 3 infect beater. Another win condition could be a blitterblossom as a one of or two of. and I may up the Thoughtsieze count. It just does a bit better drawing it over not drawing it. Great deck! I really like it+1 from me
